Venice Canal Water Levels Drop to Record Lows

The water levels in the legendary canals of Venice, Italy, have dropped to record lows. According to Venice's local tide monitoring authority, the water is 2.16-feet below average, with some canals running dry. Severe drought and record-high temperatures over the summer, combined with the Alps receiving less than half of its normal snowfall this year, have resulted in some Venetian canals not having enough water to float a boat.

Am I missing something? Isn't Venice in a lagoon that is connected to the Adriatic Sea? I know that Venice built a flood barrier that keeps Venice from super flooding from the Adriatic during high tides. So if there is too little water coming from the rivers, why not just open the flood barriers just enough to let enough water into the canals so that sea ambulances can operate?

It's a large misconception that melting ice caps will result in rising sea levels, since ice has more air than water within it. But what does happen with melting icecaps is the deregulation of water currents cooling, causing a fluctuation of the water level to become more sporadic. Warmer water expands which causes the levels to rise.

This is due to a very normal low tide which happens every year, the only odd thing is that it's lasting longer than usual and is exceptionally low, but it has happened before and it was even worse. The issue does not derive from the draught as stated but because this low tide happened at the same time with very high pressure air in the Mediterranean which is keeping the water low. Climate change has nothing to do with it, that on the contrary is rising the water levels in Venice over time, but I realise that it makes for a good headline.

This has nothing to do with drought. Venice regularly floods in its streets because the city is sinking. The "level drop" is caused by multiple high pressure systems which created back-to-back ebb tides. They'll be back to flooding within two weeks.

Actually the reason why the water is low is if you didn’t realize Venice has a Watergate system and they sometimes every number of years just like England does they will shut it the water level drops then they can clean the water way then when they open the gates back up the water comes back. OMG, this is crazy! I never would have thought that the water levels in the Venice canals could drop so low. It's such a shame to see these beautiful waterways almost empty. I hope they can figure out a solution to this problem soon.

Im confused I thought Venice sat in a lagoon completely connected to the ocean. Did they happen to deploy that flood gate that they were talking about building severing its connection to the ocean. I need to look more into this.

This happens every year for goodness sake ! Venice is a tidal city high tides, low tides , it's fed by the Adriatic, this event combined with a full moon making it a bit more pronounced than normal , what the news doesn't show is that the canals rise again when the tide comes in ...sheeesh .

I'd use this as an opportunity to both clean up the canal system, but also reinforce the city's infrastructure and check on the flood gates. So that when the floodwaters do come back, things will be up to date and will be easier to manage.

I'd say this is a reprieve that they desperately needed. If any of the officials had half a brain, they'd use this opportunity to reinforce all the buildings and implement measures to either keep the water out of reinforce the buildings against it. Because I think this might be their last chance to save the city before the water comes back, probably worse than ever, and they're completely unable to stop it from sinking or all the buildings (that weren't made to be underwater 24/7 for decades at a time) from crumbling
