Video footage, largely unedited, from historic floods in Venice. Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square) is seen during the record acqua alta event that peaked 187cm at 22:50 on the night of 12 November, 2019.
This 4K video archive of library stock shots / film footage is copyright and may not be used unless negotiated directly. Details:
www.adamsebire.info/the-works...
Looped music is © www.martinfondse.com
Footpaths, canals and buildings were submerged and washed away, damaging the historic centre's UNESCO cultural heritage sites, including its beautiful cathedral basilica.
Passerelle (walkways installed for high water acqua alta events) were washed away, becoming hazards themselves. The siren is the Venetian “Code Red” flood warning for tides exceeding 140cm (4 alert tones). These was Venezia's second worst incident with rising sea levels after the devastating impact of record 194cm tides in 1966.
It is also the last major floods before the MOSE project (see 18:20) began operating in autumn 2020, raising enormous yellow sea wall barriers to hold back rising tides and flooding associated with Bora and Sirocco winds in the gulf. Venice is still threatened by subsidence of the vulnerable city's foundations and long-term global warming sea level rise.
There is also footage of the famous Acqua Alta Bookshop (12:02) and a Fridays for Future climate-strike protest the morning after the natural disaster struck (8:58).
More (and longer) shots available on request.

Are you for real?! Do you know how much trouble this caused?! People risked their lives. This is NOT normal. We had ONE, only ONE event like this prior to 2019, it was 1966, the water reached 194cm, it left 3 people dead and destroyed houses. Today there were 204cm at sea, fortunately we had the MOSE system, otherwise it would have been a tragedy. This is the second time in 3 years. "A little flood" ma vaccagar

One thing many people do not know is that Billions of euros were gifted by the EU at that time Great Britain was still a member. However Billions of euros that were given to save Venice went missing . It was apparently misappropriated by corrupt officials and to this day no-one has really been held accountable. The money has never been located They had every chance to resolve this issue for at least the foreseeable future but allowed their officials to go unpunished. You see the problem is this, Venice is a world heritage site, the Italians know that the rest of the world do not want see this rare and amazing city founder into oblivion. So they just write off the amount missing, knowing or thinking that we will all pay again to replace the missing billions.

And now in 2021 they are saying that the canals of Venice have dried up and you could see the silt and mud below. So, what is happening? Really?

High and low water, happens to the sea too :)) But lately during the high water period in Venice, the level of the water has been too high for the usual standards of the city

Not really.. To have such a high tide you need plenty of rainfall in all the area around, with rivers pouring into the sea a big quantity of water..then you need a southern wind..

Damn that sucks! I am from New York and when Hurricane Sandy hit it was even worse and the water was so so so much dirtier! Dead or swimming rats! I’ve seen footage that my friend captured who works at the tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan of about 1 million dead rats being shoveled into garbage trucks, so much other garbage just floating around parts of the city, so much drowned cars, yet thank god by my house the worst thing that happened was a tiny branch fell! Hopefully Venice’s government takes immediate action to prevent these kind of things!

Let's be real here. The only way Venice will be saved for prosperity is if the whole parts of the important parts of the city are structurally lifted about twelve feet or more above its original level. That would cost trillions of pounds. We are all going to have to face the reality that we will loose virtually all of of historic sites during the next fifty years that is the reality I am afraid. It will also come to London and St Pauls will succumb along with Westminster Cathedral, Trafalgar Square St Martins in the Field, Manhattan In New York and it goes on and on and on. We need to start thinking of moving Great landmarks higher up country now before it is too late. We cannot keep pushing this can down the road. That will solve nothing.

Why are some places flooding while others are experiencing drought? 😪
@adamsebire
@adamsebire 2 жыл бұрын
Water is not distributed evenly across our planet, RL. A large weather system like El Niño may make one part of the globe drier and another part wetter. What climate change seems to be doing is raising the intensity and frequency of these extreme events. What was a 1-in-100 year might start to happen every decade for example, be it a drought or a flood.

This was in 2019, 187cm measured close to San Marco Square. Now we have the MOSE system, which is causing harm to the lagoon, but it protected us today. Today there were 204cm at the closest harbour entrance (which is really one of the three entrances to the lagoon). Look it up, we were expecting 160 cm, then the prediction turned into 170 last night, but this morning it reached 204cm. Fortunately the MOSE worked.
