Caught a ton of them at Seawolf park. Took the fillets to work and fed about 12 coworkers. They ate all of the fish, no complaints.

Gafftopsail are really good, But I'll only take em home if it's a good size one, like 16" or more. Reason being is that the meat yield tends to be on the small side.

One of ur BEST vid so far!!👏👏 Simply because ur helping to bust the stigma(STUPIDITY) people around the Gulf Coast keep applying to Gafttop (catfish)not being good to eat!! It is good, edible fish. Best to immediately bleed them just like other fish. FYI: ALL 3 fins have a barb. Well Done!!🤙👍

I have caught many Gaff Topsail catfish (we just called them sail cats) but not on purpose. The one I decided to eat didn't make it to the fryer. It had a group of fairly strange worms in the tail behind the anal fin. They looked like strings of jelly. Big black drum had the same malady.

I’ve been stabbed by them hard heads a lot and I just bleed the stab wound and stay quit like a warrior. I throw catfish back, I got tired of cleaning them. They are nasty, they will shit inside your cooler and will spread their slime all over the place.

Gotta say it you clean catfish like a city slicker. You skin them first. If you think sail cats are slimy, try eels. I have caught many Gaff Topsail catfish in Tampa Bay (we just called them sail cats) but not on purpose. The one I decided to eat didn't make it to the fryer. It had a group of fairly strange worms in the tail behind the anal fin. They looked like strings of jelly. Big black drum had the same malady. I am sure they are good if they are clean like the ones you caught.

Skinning them is a pain in the ass. So much easier just to fillet the skin off
@squirrelgunsmith1131
@squirrelgunsmith1131 2 жыл бұрын
@@JuarezDerrickYeah, meanwhile getting that slime all over your work surface. Skinning is easy if you do it right! I will shave the skin off of scaled fish but slick fish get it pulled off. "That is the way" little one.

Is that braid or mono ? Idk which is better for salt water
@BeforeOutdoors
@BeforeOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Just depends on what you’re used too. I prefer braid just because of the sensitivity. I feel like it really lets you feel the action of the rod too.

If you leave them on the ground for about 15 to 20 minutes the slim will dry and fall off . You won't have the slime in your cooler
