Proper ventilation system install and commissioning is vital to systems working properly. This episode of the Build Show Boston will discuss the specific details and educate people on how these systems should be installed and operate once functioning and walk through the comissioning process. We meet with Dave from Mitsubishi again to walk through some areas of the house that had extra HVAC needs. Stay tuned for an information dense episode as we get closer to the end of this Boston build!

That’s exactly what I did in 2006. I built the tightest house that we could afford and spent the rest of the budget on insulation and the HVAC system. We cheated the budget in areas like trim and cabinets and flooring. The big challenge here in Wisconsin is finding contractors that are capable/willing to install these products. It continues to this day. There is a new house under construction across the street from my house and as I watch the construction from day to day I still see the exact same process and products being used. It’s a shame! I know code has gotten better but with just a few more dollars invested it can make such a huge difference.

So true-I love watching build show and Steve and their subs, but these guys get access to the finest subs in the nation, not just the country. I wish it were simply a mater of adfordignmitsi huperhezt, zhender, etc, but 99 per cent of us struggle getting subs to roll the tape, seriously, and not poke holes in membranes…and when wa she last time you saw a builder use a legit blower test and go back and rememdiate when it is too high for code, or a inspector hold them to that standard.

I can vouch for the quiet operation of the outdoor Mitsubishi units especially in the summer. I agree with what Steve said, in the summer I have to stand right next to the unit to see the fans turning to know if it is running or not. In the winter it is just a tiny bit louder but nothing like my old outdoor central air conditioner unit. I could hear my old unit kick on when I was on the opposite side of the house. One day many summers ago it was a typical beautiful summer day with humidity in the 85% range and 97 degrees I was outside and I stopped for a second and all I could hear was the outdoor a/c units running.

One thing I'd love to learn more about is the garage. I remember in an early video Steve saying the garage was not included in the building envelope, but it's a conditioned space. Did you use the same wall assemblies as the rest of the house? Did you guys worry about testing for air leakage? Also, how do you think about ventilation in there if it's fairly air tight with cars idling and such?

In the hobby room, there will be increased humidity and mold from the soil. The ceiling unit has a merv 2 filter for the coils NOT IAQ and does little to no dehumidifying. How will mold and dew point be managed? Is there ventilation to the room?
@patrickkenny2077
@patrickkenny2077 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, doesn't really seem like an ideal selection of equipment for the room. With a mini-split you need a cooling load to be able to dehumidify... but anything you dehumidify you will likely need to re-introduce later, so you need a humidifier. You also want dedicated outside air intake/exhaust/erv.
@scottrodman4017

that room has its own supply and exhaust lines for the Zehnder.

well, it is not a 28' ceiling! That would be amazing, but a little expensive to build and to heat or cool.

On a Mitsubishi multi-zone system, what is the most efficient use of the exterior condenser units. Lets say you have 3 indoor 6kbtu units each in a room of 150SF. Can 1, multi-zone condenser efficiently supply the three heads, or should each head have its own condenser? The concern is that a condenser's minimum operating rating will be higher than what a single unit can supply. Making the multi zone less efficient.
@phamlam3720
@phamlam3720 7 ай бұрын
Those multi zone system can support five indoor units. You can check the rating and specification of each model.
@vr4042
@vr4042 7 ай бұрын
@@phamlam3720 True, for the 'maximum' the system can handle, the issue I am asking about is more, the minimum. ie, the condensers are likely set to run at certain percentages (not infinitely variable), and at the minimum percentage, would a partial load request from one 6/7K BTU indoor unit be so small, that the system would be better off with individual condensers?

I am curious how a geothermal system would have been... what was the decision process? Also with warm board do you use the heat pumps for heating? A lot if Zehnder commercials with Matt and Steve but I'm really interested in the system as a whole.
@scottrodman4017
@scottrodman4017 7 ай бұрын
several geothermal options were considered. The total load was small enough that it looked questionable whether the geothermal approach made sense. I like geothermal, so that was the initial thought. Even though Zehnder was the planned approach for an ERV, we looked at two other options. Zehnder was the unit that stood out and the experience that Steve has had with them, and comments from multiple people led to that as a decision. Warmboard is definitely a higher-cost answer, but this was another example of due diligence with others who have lived with their benefits. This is a heat pump-based unit and one of the first installed after their multi-year testing. No fossil fuels! The Mitsubishi AC system can also serve as a heating system and we will switch between Warmboard and Mitsubishi for periods of time to create data sets that allow for analysis of the comparative performance and cost to operate. The plan is to publish the data.

@@stevemcfarland4661 that credit goes to Steve and a number of great subcontractors. One of the things that should have been filmed was the Zoom meeting where we went through the entire Zehnder plan to discuss the system, balance, etc. and the changes made through that discussion. fascinating lessons from this aspect and many others. The goal is to learn enough to reduce the incremental cost of going toward passive house numbers. We have to get there. Large multifamily is there with great successes at close to cost parity, but single family has a way to go. FYI, this house design (not a stacked box) is harder to achieve passive levels, given how spread out it is.

Matt and Szabi did a great video on The Build Show covering the regular maintenance needed on Zehnder units. Well worth watching at: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/maqiiKhimMDdnXk.html It reminded me of the need to add filter changes to my calendar. Time will tell whether the 6 month time frame is sufficient or whether we need to move that to changes more often. 2 years for the core cleaning.

that would have been nice! No, that is not currently possible with Warmboard. That is something commented upon by many of us and maybe that will come in time.

How do these interface with gas-fired appliances?
@kentaltobelli1840
@kentaltobelli1840 7 ай бұрын
Heat pumps? The point is you don't need a secondary heat source if the equipment is selected and sized appropriately. However, there is a hybrid approach called "dual fuel." I'm not sure if/how it would integrate with Mitsubishi's system, but across the industry it's a bit of an afterthought because it's uncommon. Generally the backup will be electric heat strips to assist the heat pump, not a full fledged furnace.
