This week, I follow Peter Vollers from Vermont Overland, in his Range Rover Classic, as he takes me on a tour through Vermont's backcountry. Thereafter, I continue north to Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, where I pop the camper on the shore of an undeveloped lake and succumb to hordes of ravenous mosquitoes.

Once you reach our beautiful Canadian East Coast you will get a break from the bugs if you camp along the coastline. Worst time of year and there have been had floods. Seems like this year the bugs are extra bad.

Lodge makes a great scrub brush with a fairly long handle (easy to use)….cleaning the cast iron is easy if you use that brush and some Kosher Salt…never use detergent on it…scrub real good to get the main stuff off and the rest just builds into flavor (down the line). I also recommend using avocado oil and don't use PAM…PAM has lecithin which will tend to burn and stick to the surface, making it hard to clean. Avocado oil is a high temp and relatively tasteless oil. Use it when cooking and when lightly oiling the griddle after clean up…take care of your cast iron and it will last forever… - Scooter in East Texas

We typically use canola oil. It has a higher flash point than olive oil so it doesn't smoke as much. Never tried avocado oil. Love American Made Lodge Cast Iron.

On the poison ivy thing the reaction is caused by a clear oil. So the best thing is straight up elbow grease when scrubbing, though something good with grease / oil like dawn will also help. For the mosquitoes, I recommend a flamethrower. It may not stop them but it certainly is therapeutic. :)

Ahh New England in the spring...and the blood sucking hordes lol. I lived there for awhile. One spring day out on a remote trail the vacuum axle disconnect on my XJ broke. I couldn't get back out without 4WD. To fix it I had to lie on the ground and use zip ties to space the collar so it would stay locked on both shafts. I needed both hands and while I was doing it each arm had 30 mosquitoes on it and my face was covered and I was blinking mosquitoes into my eyes and breathing them in my nose. I remember at one point I just burst into tears. Seriously. Grown ass man just bawling. I just wanted to run at top speed out of the woods and leave my Jeep to rot. I just wanted to get away from the damn blood sucking bastards. Worst mosquito experience of my life.

And they say mosquitoes are bad in the South. May I suggest you should look at getting some Thermacell products. They work great inside and out. Running one a few minutes inside your vehicle or tent will run out the mosquitoes. Also, we spray clothing and inside our tent with Permethrin to help rid bugs and ticks. It works! We enjoy following your adventures! Really liked the falls in this weeks video. Good luck and safe travels from Georgia!

Have the same Lodge reversible griddle. Try a 17" laptop sleeve off of Amazon (or the next Best Buy you pass). To keep the sleeve from getting too funky, I wrap the griddle in a dish towel, then put it in the sleeve. Protects the grill and everything nearby from bumping around in the Jeep.

Maybe a thermacell mosquito repellent thing might work. I have a led lantern with one on top, it uses butane and has disk thingys you slide in. When I go camping its the very first thing I setup, also used in the shop a few times when working on vehicles and I like to think it works pretty good I think they have about a 15' radius. may not be the best but might help cut down on the mosquito's a little bit

While it's nice to have those grill marks on your burgers, using the grill side of that cast iron griddle creates a clean up nightmare. I would recommend just using the flat top side of it as it cooks whatever you have just as well and, being flat, cleanup is much easier.

You should check out the abandoned radar base in East Haven VT. Neat piece of history. Destroyed by graffiti and trash, but nonetheless a cool place to check out. A buddy and I visited last summer and camped on top of one of the radar towers. Pretty gnarly. P.S. My wife and I were really stoked to meet you on Thursday at OK4WD, but we ran into an unfortunate circumstance that brought us to an emergency delivery of our baby girl. Hopefully one of these days we’ll get a chance to meet in your travels. Happy traveling!

I haven't seen this posted yet. Just a suggestion, after I saw you bought prego sauce. Grab some frozen Italian meatballs, DeGrosso is the one I typically use. Place the meatballs in the sauce and bring to a simmer for 20 min. After 10 min start to boil the water for the noodles. The meatballs heating up in the sauce ads so much flavor, enjoy.
