In this week's episode, Spencer Durrant preaches about the use of barbless hooks for fly fishing! Ok, he doesn't preach -- but Spencer does lay out the reasons he uses barbless hooks, and why he recommends other anglers should try them. In addition to that stirring sermon, you'll also hear about:
- Tips for catching hatchery trout
- Whether you should limit your fly selection
- Tips on winter midge hatches
- The best flies for beginners to use

To me, the perfect fishing moment is landing a fish in my net, then seeing that the fly is already out and hooked...in the net! Don't need to touch the fish, just keep in in the water and let it swim out of the net. It's AWESOME!

After spending $400 at the vet to get a hook out of my labs foot it’s nothing but barbless for me. Granted we were trolling for walleye at the time. But now every type of hook I use for whatever I’m fishing is barbless.

Another great podcast Spencer ! Especially enjoyed the section regarding what flies to use on hatchery trout. I was fishing in the North Georgia mountains this late Fall and was told that the river was delayed harvest with hatchery trout two days prior. Tons of refusals were the order of the day......nymphs, dries, streamers etc. Finally caught a Brown trout on a tan midge dropper. The only fly that I had that day that would mimic a pellet was probably a light tan mop fly. Unfortunately I did not know to use it but now I will be prepared. Thanks again for all you do and continued Tight Lines 🎣

Barbless for flies are better because mostly you let fish go when fly fishing but when you use barbed hooks would be bigger fish like catfish or musky because they can handle the pain 🎣👍

I only fish with barbless hooks and I only tie & sell barbless flies. It's the way to go! Yes, it's better for the health of the fish. AND it's also better for the health of any angler who's had to pull a hook out of his or her own skin! A barbless size 8 Pat's Rubber Leg hook removed from your lower lip takes about 1 second (been there myself) -- a barbed hook removal is a group effort that is hilarious for the group and painful as hell for the person who's hooked, and possibly a huge disruption to your fishing day...

Only time I use barbed hooks is for tungsten beaded point flies that I will be tying smaller weightless droppers off of the hook bend. Having the barb mashed down gives enough of a bump to keep the dropper line on the hook, where it will eventually slip off of a barbless hook. Smashing the barb down allows for easy enough hook removal, usually don't even need pliers to pop it out. I tie all my point flies with barbed hooks and smash the barb, but everything else gets barbless hooks, including my 20-24 size tailwater flies. Have no issues landing fish, it's all about how you play the fish.

I’m 4min into this episode and I already have a comment lol. It’s funny I’ve been fishing probably a little over 18 years now out of the PNW. Salmon, steelhead, trout, sturgeon you name it if it’s a fish here I’ve been after it. I use to fish barbed on the rivers that allowed it but I was out for meat because that’s how I was raised. Now that I’m getting into my mid 20’s and my addiction to the action has grown well beyond self sustainability I find myself letting go about 90% of the fish I catch. Hundreds of fish a year I let go. When I was 18 and that trend started I made the decision to go barbless for that specific reason. I knew I had killed a lot of fish unintentionally. Being that I come from a foraging type background and that’s where my roots as an outdoorsman started a waist of life has never set right with me. I was raised on the wise words of “you kill it you clean it you eat it”.

Well on the amount of fish I catch per season I am still not won over with barbless hooks, I will however crush most bards in order to make them micro barbed in a sense but so far I cannot afford to lose any fish as what I do catch is hard-earned, I am of course releasing all my fish back into the waters as I do not eat them and nearly all of them if not all go back unharmed. Respect and a belated Happy New Year to you and the team from here in the UK.

If you're crushing the barbs, you're essentially fishing with a "barbless" hook. That's what I do with most of my hooks, because not all of my hooks I like to tie on come in a barbless version. I get kinda picky with the hooks that I use, so I end up mashing barbs a lot. That counts as barbless, in my opinion. I think you're already well on the way, John!

Hey there Spencer, my name is John and I am a disabled fisherman who uses a wheelchair due to being born with spina bifida. I am now 60 years old and I recently started learning how to tie my own flys and am taking a free classon fly tying at a local park sponsored by a fly fishing club. So because of my wheelchair I can't get into the water, so I don't use a fly fishing red and reel. I use a regular rod and a spinning reel. So can you give me some advice on what rod I should be using and what test line should I use to fish with the flys I fish? I hope you answer to this question gets answered on one of your next shows on you tube. If you do, please send me a quick email so I don't miss it. I feel if you can answer this question you will not only help me, but you'll help countless other disabled fishermen and women. Thanks Spencer. I love your shows an I rarely miss one. Take care brother and tight lines and bent rods! John

John! Sorry it took me a minute, I've been pretty busy lately. I love that you're getting into fishing any way you can! That's awesome. The only experience I have fishing flies off a spinning rod has been on lakes. You attach a clear plastic bubble to the line, then a swivel, then a couple feet of leader, and you put your dry fly behind that. You can cast it out (the bubble gives the rig weight) and let it sit there, or you can slowly retrieve that dry fly on in. You can also fill that bubble full of water, and attach a wooly bugger/other streamer and retrieve it just like you would any other lure. As far as doing that on rivers -- I'd think you could try the bubble with a dry fly, you'll just have to be really accurate with your cast to get it drifting where you want. I'd think you'd be more successful using nymphs and a strike indicator, with some split shot, on a spinning rod, than dry flies. Just my two cents, but hopefully some of that helps.

I'm willing to fish barbless on those pristine rivers where there is a two fish limit, or no catch limit. If I am fishing a stocked lake of tripoloids, I'll fish the barb and take the fish.

Always fish barbless or squeeze the barb down flat. It's better for unhooking the fish. Get them back swimming off again quicker with less damage and minimal stress. You do lose a few more fish, but that's half the fun and keeps me there trying for the next one.

Spencer great video. CA only barbless hooks. Especially in our special waters here in Norcal. So my question. The gentleman in Eastern Idaho could not make anything work. If he had fished with an indicator and lowered his midges. Is this a good solution. Thanks, Steve J.

I do, I honestly do not see a difference between barbless, and micro barbs in the fish. I do smash most of my barbs because of the damage they do to my clothing. I smash them on almost all of my larger flies. If the fly is like size 18+ I don't mash the barb.
@SpencerDurrant
@SpencerDurrant 7 ай бұрын
On those smaller flies, the barbs are small, but I still mash 'em. The hook I got stuck in my finger in the example I shared in this episode was a size 18 😂

Bruh... I use barb-less hooks but the whole "it will rust out eventually" is not true. I fished in a private abandoned quarry for years at my Grandmas and there were massive rainbows, laregmouth, and smallmouth. These fish had never seen the pressure that most bodies of water have seen and they hit everything with reckless abandon, sometimes swallowing the hook entirely. We would catch these fish on another outing and they would have the hooks coming out of their anus point first and these were barbed hooks. I even helped them along by gently removing those hooks. My point is they dont rust out, if a fish survives they pass them like anything else they eat. I saw it first hand on an isolated body of water which very few people fished.

I wasn't as clear as I could've been in what I said. Hooks will rust out/work out if the fly is stuck somewhere in its lip. But you're right, they can sometimes go through fish.

Safer for you...safer for the fish. Way more fun. Unless you absolutely need a fish dinner, can't see any reason to use barbed hooks for trout.

I find that even with barbless hooks, especially with fulling mills grub boss and grab gape along with most of Hanaks barbless hooks, that I don’t loose fish easily, sometimes I have a hard time shaking the hook out.
