This is widely regarded as one of, if not, the greatest women's finals of all-time contested between no. 1 seed, Lindsay Davenport and no. 14 seed Venus Williams. Coming into the event, Maria Sharapova was the defending champion having defeated Serena Williams in the final the year before.

Venus was seeking her fifth grand slam title having defeated Lindsay Davenport at both the 2000 Wimbledon and 2000 US Open Championships. She captured her second Wimbledon title and third overall grand slam when she defeated Justine Henin at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships and her fourth grand slam title and second US Open when she defeated her baby sister, Serena Williams at the 2001 US Open.
Lindsay Davenport was seeking her fourth grand slam after having won the 1998 US Open by defeating Martina Hingis in the finals. She captured her second grand slam at the 1999 Wimbledon Championships defeating Steffi Graf in the finals. At the 2000 Australian Open, Lindsay Davenport captured her third grand slam title by defeating Martina Hingis again.
Venus had lost her last four grand slam finals, each to her little sister, Serena Williams. Her losses included 2002 French Open, Wimbledon and US Open championships as well as the 2003 Australian Open.
Lindsay had lost her last three grand slam finals, each to a Williams sister. The 2000 Wimbledon and US Championships, both to Venus Williams and the 2005 Australian Open title to Serena Williams.
