The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, in Chile's Atacama Desert, will scan the whole southern sky every three nights with the world’s largest camera. From finding short-lived supernovae to discovering alien megastructures, it could completely change how we see the universe. New Scientist's astronomy reporter, Abby Beall, got a behind-the-scenes view of the telescope as it nears completion.

Wow, would like to go there in person! When I was stationed in San Diego many years ago, one weekend I rode my motorcycle to Mount Palomar just outside Los Angeles. Very cool, interesting and exciting, something I'll never forget! Didn't Hubble discover the expansion of the universe using the 100 inch mirror at Palomar? Kudos to shows like this, that educate the public on astronomical and cosmological subjects, is invaluable. thank you!

I came here from Danni Washington discussion about Vera Rubin on Star Talk. What an amazing thing this telescope is. Can't wait for the first images.

Why is it's lifespan only 10 years? The Mt Wilson Observatory has been in operation for 120 years...

Obviously the speech-to-text module doesn't know the acronym SLAC. People making highly technical and scientific videos should not rely on the speech-to-text module having the full scientific vocabulary.

Pronounced slack, we know who built it and where it is, camera should be moving to Chile soon.

can they use the telescope lens to "detect" gravity wavs due to how the lens misforms a lightsource or the lens itself -maybe this is to much or only a specific wavelenght

Gravitational waves are much too long for this type of telescope. For more information about how they are detected I suggest reading up on the LIGO, Virgo & KAGRA observatories. The next generation of this type is LISA is currently being built in Europe. It will orbit the sun trailing in earths orbit.

Very advanced technology, imagine Vera C. Rubin Observatory on the same level as Hubble telescope, what a wonder it could be.

Did she say Dyson spheres??!? I'd be happy just finding planet X, Or is that planet IX now

I hope they come up with a program to detect and remove all the MANY (and growing) Starlink satellites that will cross overhead nightly.

Do you think this telescope could find Planet 9 existence?
@davideocassette6312
@davideocassette6312 11 ай бұрын
Within the first couple of months of operation the telescope is expected to map every object in the solar system larger than a small asteroid. So yes, if planet 9 exists it will find it pretty quickly.
