If you ever asked yourself if the direction of your "ram air intake" matters, you find the answer in this video. At least in regard to a Land Rover Discovery 3 and 4 TDV6. We tested both orientations on our LR3 and got surprising results. This is not only for Land Rover drivers true. Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

I absolutely love the humour on this channel. The only thing that I have seemed to have learnt from watching 4x4 and overlander channels is that a raised air intake is not a snorkel but a snorkel is a water-proofed raised air intake.

I worked for a German company for a few years and I can say that your English is pretty good. I don't have a snorkel on my D4 mainly because they look ugly but also because I do not intend to take my D4 through any deep water crossings. The snorkel would help reduce the amount of sand and dust enetering the filter box but I carry a few extra filters on long outback trips and just check the filter once a week or so. BTW I am not a fan of the K&N filters and believe the original paper filter does a much better job of delivering clean air at a consistent flow rate to the engine.

Hugh here from Melbourne Australia..Love your videos as i do most maintenance on my 2006 Disco 3 . TDV6. I am going to turn my SAFARI (haha) snorkel to face rearwards & see how she goes. I bought my Disco in 2019 & it had done 200,000km & i think plenty of towing throughout Northern Queensland in the hot & dusty areas you mentioned . I bought it because the poor Chinese lady who brought it down to Melbourne (2nd owner) had spent over $17,000 in repairs & gave up. It was my 4th Discovery & I took the plunge so to speak. It has been ok so far at 250,000 the main problem was the air suspension & given my needs I elected to import from UK coil suspension & fit it myself at a cost of $1800 compared with Dealer $3800 repair to replace compressor & control unit. Drives nicely but not as nice as the air system. Only real disadvantage is that the Tow Capacity is reduced. I have just serviced the Auto transmission &now looking at replacing the Right Front drive shaft seal & boots. Have watched your video to give me courage to do this. After that may be attack the oil leak from up near the turbo.....the jury is still out on that one. My main hobby is NOT Disco 3. It is 1949 Standard Vanguard.....73 years old original running gear & still purrs like a kitten. Cheers & keep up the great work. I enjoy it immensley.

My vehicle has had its snorkel on for 12 years now (also a Safari copy, but a slightly better looking one I believe). The previous owner ran it with the snorkel head backwards, for mostly the same reasons as you present, but I keep it facing the front because it looks better IMO :)) Anyway, you must be right since the original LR (Mantec) snorkel also points backwards. Anyway, you made me curious, and I will do the fuel consumption experiment as well with the snorkel pointing in both directions, and I'll report back. Cheers!

My Comments! 1st. The Snorkel helps massively to keep your air filter clean when you driving in Dust behind another car (i.E. in my Case Marokko) 2nd. I have been told by Engineers for Engines (BMW, based I live in Munich) never to use a K&N Airfilter when I like to have a reliable car (Racing - different topic). They do not clean the air enough and the result will be to have a ruined engine when the dust reaches the cylinder.

Just as a precuationary warning, cyclonic filters need to be matched to your air delivery requirements. I spoke to donaldsons engineers and was informed they are not designed for highway use due to the venturi effect and you may starve you engine from air. Below 70km/h is what they recommend. This could possibly have the same effect when facing the snorkel backwards, lower fuel consumption could be a result of the less fuel required to obtain the correct a/f ratio. Once again, based on the information from the donaldson engineers.

Hello Vera and Christian, I have my snorkel backwards as well and basically for the same reasons. I still don't understand why people have the snorkel looking forward as when you are driving off road or overlanding on dirt roads all the dirt goes directly to the snorkel. Also as you pointed out water goes directly into the snorkel when driving in the rain. Another great video, and I totally agree 👍 with you guys again. Thank you again and stay safe.

Brilliant video!! Firstly, your English is great, as long as you don't "screw up", "oh my God"!! It's interesting your use of a K&N filter vers. a standard paper element. K&N filters definitely flow more air, but is this required? Even if the roads are vacuum'd in Germany, they do let through more fine dust, but how significant this is, I don't know. Vera is right, as always, the snorkel looks good, but the fuel consumption figures are interesting - shows the importance of engine mapping - facing forward versus facing back. I'm surprised an aftermarket map was not supplied with the snorkel, and the K&N will exaggerate the problem... Fun video as always.

Yes, the K&N is not very dense. No problem here but in dusty regions not advisable. We will have to test a normal filter with the snorkel turned backwards now. Christian

I bought a snorkel for ours over a year ago, but it is still sitting in the shed. Apart from water crossings, I really don't see us needing to install it. I have had water right up to the side intake and nearly had it go under, so there is a practical use. I keep thinking about a temporary flexy snorkel for the super rare times we may need one. Facing rearwards is for exceptionally dusty conditions, and also prevents water ingress. If the system is properly sealed you can cross deeper water, it is also a good idea to have a raised exhaust.

It is often called a Shnorkel with the emphasis on Shhhh (terrible English I know) where I live in Oz, but us Aussies are renowned for making up our own versions of names of things...silly really, but that's how we tend to roll down under! It's a word that we find somewhat amusing for some reason, hence the need to make up our version of the name when we pronounce it. Nice job by the way. Looks great.I cannot say I have ever seen one facing backwards in Oz so far, but what you say makes perfect technical sense. Many get them to just to make the vehicle look better, yet the vehicle may be a garage Queen. lol I agree though it does make it look good and that's all that matters!

Hello, thanks for your interesting tutorial about snorkels. 👍 I live in the Netherlands, the country next to Germany. 😁 Yes, I found out that a snorkel can be helpful in Europe. I own 2 Pajeros, and used them also for my hunting- hobby. After one tour through a hunting-field with very high grass, the whole air-filter was full of seeds and other particles. After mounting a snorkel , I did not have that problem again. Airfilters stay much cleaner. My Pajero L040 diesel, has a safari snorkel, and I have the top facing to the back of the car. On my Pajero V20, 3500 petrol, I have mounted a TJM snorkel, of which the top only can face forward.☹ After a few journeys over the highway, the air-filter was full of insects and other debris. Because I could not turn the top backwards, I decided to install a piece of pantyhose (!) over the opening, and hold it inplace with rubber bands that I have cut from an motorcycle innertube. Works fine, no more insects in the filter. How it influences the fuel consumption, I do not know. The Pajero I diesel consumes about 11 liters on 100 km. The Pajero II petrol comsumes 13-14 liters pro 100 km. I did not buy a 4x4 car for low fuel costs.....😉 Grüsse aus der Niederlande 🙋‍♂️

Little turn from back to outside of snorkel cap (+15-20 degree) is reduce air intake temperature up to 5 C at 80+ kmh speed. It is due to air decompression due to acceleration flow from the windshield. Tested with thermocouple. It is important that such turn also avoid partially ejection effect and air pressure drop

Hi Vera and Christian, sorry for giving again a comment but as a typical german "Klug.....ßer" I cant avoid it :-) . First your English is really good, especially because its better than mine! Second, you are right, the ram effect or "Staudruck" of your snorkel will not increase the efficiency of your turbo pressure mensurable. But what I experienced on my TD5 with a VTG Turbo and a big 80mm diameter snorkel is that this tube creates a significant pressure drop. This was so extreme that the compressor began to be extremely noisy like getting into a resonance, because it couldnt get the air it needed. Especially with an agressive fuel map. I measured the pressure drop with a professional tool at the entrance of the snorkel and the outlet, and it was huge. In spite of having the biggest diameter of 80 mm for this 2.5 l Diesel, which was wider than the original tubes in the system. The only way to get it fixed was to drill a second air intake in the filter housing. What I want to say at the end of the day is that anything you put before your original air intake has to be seen as a resistance for the compressor and is not good. It will not be important at lower loads, but at higher loads and rpm, it will reduce the efficiency and pressure of the compressor. The only positive of the snorkel is that, when you have heavy rain on the motorway, the trucks you are passing on the left side are not throwing the water into your air intake. This was a typical Defender problem having the same type of air intake on the right side. Resulting in wet air filters. Best Regards Michael

Hallo Michael, I have a feeling that our Snorkel content is not finished yet, thanks to you. 😅👍 We do check our air filters regularly, more than we put in vidoes, and they have never been wet. Maybe we would not have put a snorkel on if we did not have a KZfaq channel, but I have wanted one for 25 years now, ever since we owned our first Jeep. If having a snorkel causes damage to the engine, one more reason for Christian to finally take that engine out. Thanks for your comment, really appreciated. I am looking, however, for a cyclone filter at the Abenteuer&Allrad. Maybe he'll buy me one. 🙋‍♀️ Vera

Hello from Australia🤟🇦🇺 You two are such good value. I have a snorkel on my 93 Pajero 2.8TDi, and I don't need it for water crossings here in Aus either. I've only tried once going through water as high as the bottom of the doors and I got stuck, spinning my bald rear tyres, then I had to call my friend with a Landrover 90 TD5 to winch me out😂 I also never go 'bush' or off road 4wd-ing and it's never very dusty in the suburbs of Perth where I live, so another good reason I don't need a snorkel. I just put it on to look cool too.🤣👍🇦🇺

Unbelievable 26 minutes for an explanation on a snorkel, on my discovery I oriented it to the rear, the only thing that happened was when I was off-roading, one time I opened the passenger window and every time I put the gas on I felt like there was a ball bearing noise, at first I thought it was the front wheel bearing that was screwed. Then I realized that it was the air intake! 🖐️😁 😁 😁

I live in Finland, and my reasoning for having a snorkel is I went on a trip to Denmark a few years ago, and crossed a stream on a beach that turned out to be surprisingly deep, like up to the bonnet deep while going down into it. Didn't have one, and my air filter got wet. Since then I haven't crossed any other streams, but hey you never know. At least I have a story to tell when people wonder what particular river I'm planning on crossing with my snorkel. My disco 2 has the snorkel facing forwards, because it looks cool, and my 4x4 sprinter has it facing backwards, because it sounds cool (and also to not get it clogged with snow in winter). Now I'm thinking I should turn the D2's head backwards as well.

The reason you fit a snorkel for water crossings is; afterwards when you are replacing all of those damaged modules; and corroded connectors, at least your engine won't be Hydro locked.

One main reason for turning the snorkel (raised air intake) to the rear of the car is that on very "dusty" dirt roads (not found in Germany) and you are in a convoy of cars (or one car) throwing up lots of dust, by having the intake rear facing, you collect less dust.

There are very, very few tracks in Europe where that much dust is thrown up, to cause anywhere near problems. If you want to seal the intake, then look no further than the push fit plastic connectors that leak, and nt water tight, late model defender air boxes even leaked, so even though you have a snorkel, water is already in through the duct work.

Never heard such bullshit information in my entire life. Firstly if your going to suggest (which is insane mind you) that you use less fuel by turning it backwards graph and show some live data from the ecu and sensors which you ultimately suggest are having problems with a more positive pressured air intake tract. By turning it backwards creating a vacuum at your engines air intake you are only increasing pumping losses (engine working harder to pull air in) = more fuel used. Don't you have a gap diagnostic tool or something?! Also FACT your intake air temps WILL be cooler as apposed to sucking in air from behind the guard etc. Turbocharged or not cooler is better... Truck manufactured have used the ram air intake for a long time to help with economy (where this concept came from). Also if you or anybody else believes the using 9.2 liters per 100ks at 140kph your either just plain stupid or on meth... your clearly going downhill.. if that was accurate you would be using 5 liters per 100 at 90kph. It really me knowing so many people would take what your saying as gospel when you have absolutely no idea what your talking about!! No data to support a single thing your saying! What the hell are you on about saying things like you need different engine mapping for a snorkel??!! The map is irrelevant!!! It's changing all the bloody time to suit your air intake according to the data from various sensors.

Kevin Barry, have always thought that an exhaust pipe snorkel would be more beneficial, if my memory is correct John Blashford -Snell had one on his Range Rover in 1971 when his army team crossed the Darien Gap. It’s just coming up fifty years ago since they completed that task so this topic on LR Time is very topical.

Hi Christian & Vera, no apologies required. I've got a cheap $120 Chinese snorkel fitted that lasts now for over 11 years. The Safari's for $700 are a rip-off. And yes, we carry a toolbox in our WhatsCruiser, but I've never used it. It's just for the case that we have to help out some Disco drivers, but they've usually heaps of tools and spares with them anyway. Apart from this, great topic today. We have the same discussion here. Inlet to the front or rear. We are front drivers but the WhatsCruiser has the famous 4.5L inline 6 NA Petrol engine (1FZ-FE), different application. Yes, and we drive sometimes through deeper water. It's a proper water crossing when the water flushes over your bonnet and the front of your car starts slightly to float, what feels weired.

I would have sprayed the K&N oil on the "dirty" side of the filter, so that there's less chance of any oil getting onto the MAF sensor wires, which will cause false readings and mess up the ECU ability to fuel the engine correctly. Greetings from a Toyota owner from Australia. :-)

The main reason for the backwards facing snorkel top in 🇬🇧 is when off roading, the overhanging branches like grabbing and pulling off🤭 the forward facing top! If you have to keep fixing it on the same track it gets old real quick!🤬 hence turning it backwards. It's not a fashion choice like a backwards baseball cap. But for a snorkel top I'm a fan of the cyclone pre filter. It's amazing how much shit it catches before your main filter.

After watching this video I thought I would compare the two ways on my holiday trip. I drove from Northumberland to Cornwall and back. A round trip of 940 miles, (1,5112km) trying to keep to 70mph, (112kph) where possible. We used 16.22gallons. The snorkel faced to the rear on the outward journey and returned 29.4mpg at an average speed of 44mph and faced the forward on the homeward leg, returning 27.16mpg at an average speed of 55mpg. We used 17.4 gallons. The induction sound when the snorkel was facing the rear was like a cement mixer. Not a nice noise. I was trying to drive consistently, not economically so these results may prove absolutely nothing.

I have snorkel on my defender. Don't notice the induction noise above all the other noises. I have not smoke tested it so probably false piece of mind. Occasionally run 30+" depth. Amazing how deep you can go in LR even without snorkel. In a dip had it briefly flow on to the hood on my D2 no snorkel. My friend hydro locked his D1 TDI though so snorkel can come in handy. Needed an engine rebuild.
