Christian chats with James Heffron, co-founder and head brewer of the mighty Verdant Brewing Co. They discussed the Cornish brewery's meteoric rise, their influences and their plans to expand into different beer styles and give them that Verdant touch.
This is one part of the interview with James, which focuses primarily on the brewing side of things. A second part focusing on their series of beers and the branding is coming next week.

Fantastic video and interview. Went down to their tap room in Falmouth back in August last year (2022) and had a great time sampling as many beers as I coud take and enjoying great food along with having a look at the brewery setup. Looking forward to going down again sometime soon.

Cheers Neal! Yeah, the taproom and brewery setup was genuinely awe-inspiring. The Verdant Seafood Bar in Falmouth was also excellent if you didn't check that out.

Fantastic interview. Amazing the progress Verdant have made in a (relatively) short period of time. Long may it continue. Who’s better at football btw; James, Billy or Adam?! Should be an inter-brewery 5-a-side competition! 😂

Would love to see cask ales return to pubs, but to be commercially viable, they would need to be sold at a premium, and the brewery receiving a financial return to keep cask profitable as a differentiated product. Could HMRC be persuaded to take a lower tax rate from a beer that is distinct to the UK?

Most decent pubs offer something on cask, often from a fairly local brewery. Weatherspoons guest ales are cask also

@@jimbo4375 £2.29 per pint, who makes the dosh? Wetherspoons are not reliable in having a decent pint on cask. I would rather pay more, knowing that at least they have one cask beer available 365, which is what a decent pub is.

What makes a beer a cask ale?

Cask ales aren't carbonated, they're served at a warmer temperature than keg beers (cellar temp 11-13c) and they undergo secondary fermentation in the barrel (called a cask). A real Great British institution. The Craft Beer Channel have some great videos explaining cask ale in more detail on KZfaq. 👍

@@planetbeertv Thanks, just watched the CBC video. Only staying fresh for 3 days Is a bit of draw back for homebrew, would struggle with 40 pints.

@@markgarner9832 bottle conditioned homebrew is actually fairly close to cask, i.e. carbonated naturally by the yeast rather than by adding CO2

@@planetbeertv Back in the day, some 40 years ago, as students, we would get a 40 litre wooden firkin filled by a brewery in Reading. The beer was still fermenting, and we broached the firkin and installed a wooden shive to let the firkin vent carbon dioxide. It was ready to drink after resting for three days. Never tasted ale as fresh as that, had many great parties, with beer on tap all night! Now that is what I call real cask ale. We returned the firkin and got our deposit back from the brewery. Pity no one seems to do that nowadays.

@@jimbo4375 Have done keg secondary ferment but used CO2 to pour via a floating dip tube.
