This was the first record I bought. I was 9 years old. It came out in 1974. I mowed a boat load of lawns, and rode my bike to the record store. My parents HATED it. I was stunned the first time I listened to it. I'd give ANYTHING to hear it again for the first time. I am very jealous of and also extremely happy for you. If you like this, try King Crimson. Extremely talented musicians, brilliant compositions, and whilst not similar in style, very very different from the typical 4/4 music.

High notes normally Roger's doing, he had a fantastic falsetto. Bring back that Leroy Brown, it was a Banjo ukulele in the mid section. She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes) was sung by Brian with Brian & John playing acoustic guitar, I think its one of Brians and should get more air play.

Thanks Verdy, it is such a joy to see someone appreciate Queen's talents so exquisitely... Yes, the falsetto voices in many of their songs, like "Ogre Battle" and "My Fairy King" are all Roger Taylor's accomplishments, just like the Galileo's in BoRhap... actually, checking out wikipedia for the song "In the Lap of the Gods", they have Mercury attributed as vocals and Roger as "screaming"... how appalling!! Did you notice that in "She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)" it was Brian May singing the lead vocals -- the song was written by him while in the hospital (Hepatitus while on tour) in the U.S. in New York -- the sirens and the heavy breathing in the end was his idea of dying in that hospital... and the deep bass vocal in "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" was one of the crewmen... and yes, Brian was playing a banjo-ukulele... when they performed it live, a crewman would hand him the instrument to play that short piece... so cool... and yes, the harmonies and the overall musical prowess have given Queen a real edge to greatness in the music industry... which is why I have loved them for so long... really appreciate you introducing more future musical fanatics to the talents of Queen... legends never die... blessings.

Yes the vocals of Queen are very distinct , but for me the tone of Brian May guitar on the early albums is so completely unique . The genius of Brian apparently is not limited to guitar playing . The guitar he played exclusive on the early albums was constructed by the musician . An old fire place mantle , and hand crafted pickups were the reason for the distinct tone quality .

Thanks for returning to Queen, Verdy. Love your reactions. Bryan's first introduction to instruments was a banjolele (cross between a banjo and ukelele) that his father played. He taught Bryan cords on it, which transferred quite well to the guitar. He got his first guitar for his 7th birthday. When he was a teenager, he didn't like the sound of the affordable guitars his friends were buying, so he and his father made his guitar (the Red Special) from stuff they had around the house, like mother of pearl buttons, an ancient fireplace, and a table, among other things. It has a sound like no other guitar. It took about a year and a half before it was finished.

A John Deacon special. Also check out his (writing) song "In Only Seven Days" from the Jazz album. Another Deacon song that is exquisite and completely musical in his own brilliant style. Repeated listenings will bring tears to your eyes, when you pay rapt attention to the lyrics and hear Freddies voice, it can become quite intoxicating. Just like any Queen from 1973-1979.

You should def check out and react to the full live a the Rainbow concert before you move on to Night At the Opera, it consists only of songs off their first three albums. And watching Queen live is just as good as listening to their studio work. They were all brilliant musicians. PS. In the Lap of the Gods revisited usually closed their main sets, up until We Are The Champions was released.

If you listen closely to the amusement park sounds on the first side you can hear someone whistling a song, that's the last song you heard at the end of the 2nd album. "Cadence" is pronounced, "KAY-dence". Bring Back Leroy Brown: if that one instrument you asked about WASN'T a banjo, then, it was a ukulele. They touched, briefly on, "Lap Of The Gods" on one of the first two albums. That's why they added the word, "Revisited". Something's wrong with your mic or your recording device. Every time you said something, there was a half second of dead air in the middle of it! The sound keeps cutting out while you're talking but not while the music is playing. If you're recording your speaking bits and the music onto the same device then it must be your mic that keeps cutting out. The strange thing is, it's almost every time you said something about their vocals! When are you gonna get to some 10 c.c. albums. At least the first 4. There's also a non-album cut called, "Waterfall" that I'm sure you'll love. Also, if you like Queen, you should listen to at least the first album, "Soon", by Lollipop Factory! They are incredible! It's here on YT! We did 3 gigs with them and in each case, they sounded exactly like what you hear on the album! And there was only 3 guys in the band! They still sound pretty close to that even with only 2 people in the band: David Tweed (guitar and vocals) and his girlfriend/wife, Becca Manning (drums and backing vocals).

GREAT reaction!!! I don't know which side I like more - so I'll just say 'THE WHOLE ALBUM'. Stone Cold Crazy, to me, is the birth of Thrash Metal - that riff is manic - 2 1/4 minutes of break-neck, rapid-fire frenzy! It's no wonder the follow up is Dear Friends - need to calm down. Definitely one of Queen's finest albums. Cheers!

Young lady, I LOVED watching your reaction to this album. When I was a couple years younger than you appear to be (45 years ago or so) I used to ride my bicycle 10 miles to one record store or another to purchase these LPs (imagine a 10 mile ride home carrying a clunky bag with one, two, or 3 LPs). It was so worth it to me as a kid. I'd stand in front of the mirror and pretend I was Brian or Freddy. I was relieved in later years to find out other kids did that too. Interesting story about this album. After recording the previous album, Queen came to the US as an opening act. They were experiencing the rock and roll lifestyle for perhaps the first time. Legend has it that Brian got involved with a prostitute in New Orleans (Peaches, who is mentioned in Now I'm Here) and contracted Hepatitis, then pneumonia. He was hospitalized for awhile and afraid he'd be replaced. He was assured he wouldn't be, and the other three went in the studio and recorded the basic tracks for Sheer Heart Attack while Brian recovered, leaving gaps in the music for Brian to fill. So, those incendiary guitar performances that you enjoyed...they were executed by a guy not long out of the hospital. On the song Misfire, Brian's only playing is on 8 little phrases at the end. All the rest of those guitars are by John Deacon, the bassist. That's quite a story, but, apparently it's true. Great reaction vids, honey.

There is lot's of sly humor on this album. I first heard it when I was about 11, and the message in "Misfire" went completely over my head. It hit me like a ton of bricks years later when a young lady used the term "misfire" to describe an embarrassingly short lovemaking experience. The song is a plea--I suppose from John Deacon's wife--to "carry on" because, after all, "there's only one bullet." Today I chuckle every time I hear it. Sort of a less crass version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's, "Relax."

Verdy, a suggestion for an up coming review. Please react to "Peace Sells But Who's Buying" the second album from Megadeth. Released in 1986, it is considered one of the great Thrash metal albums released that year. If you like tons of killer guitar riffs, effortless change-ups and solos galore, you must listen to this album. At 36 minutes, 8 songs, you could nearly review the full album in one video. Unlike Metallica, Megadeth took Thrash in a different direction.

I don't know if you have checked out the video but it is highly recommended. Metallica did not want the exact same cover and told them to do what they wanted but keep the lyrics, everything else was game.
