Here is a very brief introduction to the Vermona MeloDICER, a Eurorack sequencer module with a twist! If you've ever sat in front of a traditional sequencer, tweaking the controls trying to come up with something that sounds interesting, then I think you are going to really appreciate the MeloDICER a lot. It's a fantastic creative tool for everything from ambient evolving semi-random soundscape sequences to drum patterns and lead or bass synth riffs.
This video is not a review or tutorial, I was hoping to provide a link to a good tutorial video on YT but it seems there aren't any! But here are a couple of videos that look at the MeloDICER functionality in some details, just there is no talking:
• Vermona - MeloDICER (r...

Tim, thanks again for pointing out another creative tool. Great idea to use a Doepfer Sequential Switch. After you made the suggestion of the Doepfer Dual Quantizer for the Behringer 100 series sequencer, I ended up picking both up and use them constantly with the 100 series modules and others in my collection. I look forward to trying out the Vermona MeloDICER once I locate one!

There are lots of feedback on Akia's questionable marketing (when considering the non keyboard MPC products) and in particular the quality of plugins and the overall cost of investment. Tim, question: the sequence starts of with one note (E) and then the major 7th is added (D#) as a second, but you can also hear the fifhts of these notes early on B and A#, most clearly at 5m29 and 5m51. Are these notes coming from the Mutable Rings or is the Vermona adding a fifth to the notes and can this be turned OFF/ON? Thank you

Hi, The Melodicer will only ever play the notes you tell it, Rings does add harmonics depending on the settings.

Any ideas how one could use the melodicer cv to midi sequence the perfourmer ?
@TimShoebridge
@TimShoebridge 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can get eurorack modules that will turn CV and gate signals into MIDI messages. They are usually MIDI to CV converter modules that have a MIDI out as well as a MIDI in. I haven't tried any unfortunately so can't give you my personal experience.

I'm keen on using a Kenton Pro CV to MIDI Converter so I can use a MeloDICER to control soft synths in Ableton. (Until I can 1. practice enough with it so that 2. I can justify splurging on a Perfourmer MkII and similar hardware!) Question. How would I power the MeloDICER though...it's Eurorack so likely accepts power via a ribbon? Can it be connected to mains power... I did read the MeloDICER manual, and have emailed VERMONA directly. Just wondering if anyone here has experience with such things.

Tim you have practiced melodies, harmonies, tuning oscillators enough to be able to hear pitches with accuracy. ditch that awful vocal synth and just practice singing, I know its hard. im going through a similar thing. but the way I see it, you wouldn't expect to be good at playing a keyboard in a few weeks from zero experience, so just start slow and manage expectations. ive been playing a lot with talk box and vocoder to help break down those walls and make performing with my voice/mouth and into a mic feel more normal -- without having to constantly listen to my out of pitch singing haha. its been helping a lot. maybe this will be helpful to you or someone else watching.

The Melodicer is really cool but there are much less expensive probability sequencers if you are into DIY. It also takes up a huge amount of rack space. I have over 2000 HP of rack space (I’m not rich, it’s mostly DIY modules) and I still cringe when I see a 34HP sequencer module. On the other hand, it’s an extremely useful tool for creating unique sequences and it’s hard to put a price on something that can fundamentally change the way you create music.
@bobcatt2294

On a side note, listening to your music, you do not use sequencing much, which is surprising your fascination with the Vermona Melodicer as a music instrument.

you can use a turing machine followed by a quantizer (that lets you select the notes to play), I think it can be close and both modules can be used for other purposes, but the price will be the same. The Vermona is really done for a specific job and you don't lose your times to get the result. So question is "do you need a stochastic sequencer in all your tracks?". If the answer is "yes", then buy it :-)
@roboklops3193
@roboklops3193 3 жыл бұрын
The main difference between this and a turing machine + quantizer is: with the turing machine/quantizer combo you get random values that you can freeze/loop up to 32 steps, that then get quantized to the notes of the scale you did define in the quantizer, but when your using e.g. one of the traditional 7 modes/scales, you can't for sure tell which key it is in (for those 7 notes can be 7 different scales, depending on the key). So you need to use a second voice to create a bassloop or maybe a drone that really hammers that key home into the ears of the listener :) With the melodicer, you can specifically define which notes can be played, and how probable it is, so you make the rootnote more probable then the others, and /or do the slowly introduce more notes, playing the sliders (like Tim does in the video). So, from a composer/songwriter perspective, someone that has a key/scale in mind that he wants to use, thats a win.
@KNHSynths
@KNHSynths 3 жыл бұрын
@@roboklops3193 the tools is of course handier than a set of modules you have to connect. I will not enter the debate how to patch them to get exact same result that's not the point. The problem is just the price of the Vermona module for somethings you can already do with existing modules. It's more handy, so it's ok to pay something, but not sure this help worth $450. Just a bit overpriced. But it is a cool module, of course.
