It looks like this mall should never have been built. Given the WB posters it also appears to have been dead for quite some time. I would expect the value of this place is well under a couple million dollars. There is no saving this place. Excellent video Sal. As always great content.

I worked at Stacy's from 85 to 89. Carson Poole owned it. Bob Sugg was the manager. Stacy's or the Sound Shop were the Places to work in VPM. Best pizza, fries and shakes ever. I was a cruiser . Got my first traffic ticket in this parking lot. Got engaged in this parking lot. Got ready for my Wedding at Merle Norman in this mall. My sons first trip out of the house at 3 days old was to VPM. What many people dont remember is that back in the day Nobles Bakery used to be in the mall as well. And the best store ever.....A magic shop!!! Yeah Im pretty old LOL....48 in 2 weeks.....But I grew up in this mall. I loved it. A million memories live here. RIP VPM.

The K and W cafeteria was on the opposite side of the mall from Goody's, but was long gone when Goody's clothing store opened. There was once a Walden Books, a game room called Take 10 and a pet store. JCPenny anchored the mall on one end and Bell on the other, with Brody's becoming the third anchor when the addition was built. The Little Mint had the best fried chickenpox and was in the center of the mall, next door to the Hallmark store across from Stacy's. I remember the Roses had a lunch counter with all-you- could- eat spaghetti on certain days of the week. Christmas time was always special at VPM with animated bears, a train ride, piped in music, and Santa Clause taking Christmas wishes and posing for photos with the little kids. My favorite store was always the Orange Julius! Many great memories of time gone by!

This mall is in my hometown. Stacie’s had really good subs and fries. When I was growing up, we went to the Sound Station music shop to get Ticketmaster concert tickets. My grandma loved to go to JC Penney and Belk and eat at the Chick-fil-A. After I graduated college, I feel like the only things left were Foot Locker, Belk, and the DMV.

In 1979 Carson Poole (the nephew of Roy) opened “The Biscuit House” where Stacy’s was. In 1983 Stacy Plummer started making payments and opened it as Stacy’s. In 84 I started as manager. That same year Stacy Plummer skipped town with instructions to continue making deposits. After a few months of the bills not being paid. We had to close. The next day we opened back up under ownership of Carson Poole.

My god... So many memories rushed to me throughout this video. Kinston is where I was born and raised. The mall was my stomping grounds for YEARS! I'd say between the years 2000 and 2006 was when I was there often. Use to go there to shop and eat at Stacy's, Chick-fil-A, and Andy's (now Hwy 55). Also, I used to get my hair cut at the barber shop that was right beside Expressions. During my teenage years, I'd go there to hang out all day with friends, go on dates with girls, and skateboard outside the mall. They had a place called the Alternative Shop, which is where I would hang out and shop most of the time. They did piercings, sold skateboard related things, swords, daggers, incense, tapestries, adult toys, and all kinds of awesome stuff. They also had a suit of armor and a Morning Star weapon. The arcade was always a hotspot, as well. There was Radio Shack where I got my electronics. And, how could I forget the candy store! There were so many different kinds of candy in bulk that you could choose from that were in dispensers. You just grabbed a bag and filled it up with whatever candy you wanted and the man would charge by weight. Ahh... the good ol' days. At one time, they had a place named Animal Jungle which was a pet store. That's where I first saw a capuchin monkey; her name was Cassie. I have so many wonderful memories there and I hate to see it dead and empty like this. It used to be alive and thriving, especially during Christmas time. They would have a small train ride for kids, a huge tree, presents, huge displays, and a Santa Clause that would let kids sit on his lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. It was so wholesome and really got you into the Christmas spirit. Although I moved out of Kinston about 20 years ago, I would still love to see someone bring it back to life. I would definitely take a trip there every once in a while to soak in the nostalgia. Thanks for the video!

Before Take Ten Arcade, which occupied multiple different spots in the mall for some reason, there was the Barrel of Fun, which had a doorway that was literally a giant barrel that you walked through to enter. I believe this was down by Brody's, where KB Toys eventually went.

I feel bad for all of them. Especially as someone who got to see the coming and ascension of malls in the late 60's, through their growth in the 70's, stagnation in the 80's and death spiral in the 90's onward. They used to be a great place to go. . .Shop at your leisure, take in a movie, enjoy a sit down restaurant. . and now, they are like drive-in theatres, dying horribly.

VPM in the day was the place to be, to shop, meet friends, eat and just have a good time. The memories of July 4th and the fireworks show after the mall closed and there was Christmas time. The mall parking lot overflowing across the streets into every vacant parking spot around the mall. The center part of the mall filled with decorations and Wow the people. So many people from all over, young and old, and you could barely move. Then came the changes to Kinston and I really believe one of the biggest reasons for VPM's death and the same reason Kinston died. Kinston truly was the hub of eastern Carolina in the day. Kinston was home to textiles and tobacco which gave it a foundation for jobs and money. Kinston had an airport with the only jet flight services in Eastern NC. Some companies began to move in giving Kinston a bright future for more growth. Then all the textile companies began to close, shirt factories, twine and fabric making companies gone, along with the jobs. The real death blow was the change in the tobacco markets and how tobacco was grown and sold and the really big money was gone. During that time Kinston was run by 2 or 3 very wealthy families and nothing happened here unless they approved, still it was a great place to live. However, the ruling family's decisions to stop other businesses from coming, left Kinston to stagnate. The other towns Greenville, New Bern, and Goldsboro grew while more and more businesses in Kinston closed. This meant young people had to move to find a job that paid more than minimum wage. There are groups, some local government, and people doing what they can to bring Kinston back but it will never be what it was in the day.

My mall!!! Okay so from what I remember (could be mistaken), Expressions was a home decor store. It was kind of tacky, lots of hot pink and lime green. There was also a lot of Christmas decorations too. I don't think it lasted too long, and I want to say it closed before both Sears and JCPenney. There used to be a Chick-fil-a and an Andy's (now Hwy 55) in that food court area. There was a card/candy store next to that Take II arcade that I loved. It was a good horrible mall.

It was actually one of the first tenants to vacate the property, and no one took its place. I honestly believed it was what started the decline back then. Most of the other stores that had been there previously had new tenants come take their place when they left. But expressions remained empty, and started the “abandoned space” trend. And yes it was a home decor/ craft store. Like a cheap hobby lobby or something.

Rent is the ultimate killer but it's not the only factor. The mall was sold and the new owners raised the rent. I was working at the mall at the time and once the rates went up they weren't able to fill spots. As more places left the rest were left with the rent going higher to make up the difference. Add that to the psudo curfew Kinston downtown maintains and high poverty high crime rates after the bypass made for a long slow death.

Brilliant. Thanks for that, beautifully produced. A pleasure to watch. I don’t know why I find these films so depressing, perhaps it’s because I lived through the glory years of Malls and it remind me of a time in my youth, when these sprawling buildings actually were the centre of the village, the town square of you like. They were our meeting places, our social events, a way to spend pocket money, discovery of the self ..... You capture the essence of these places, and reverently recapture the glory of a by gone era. Your films are going to be viewed in the future much like we look back on the early films of the 19 century- snapshots into a way of life that is familiar yet represents a way of life we can’t quite relate to, a period of consumerism. Prosperity and a way of life unique to the twentieth century. Thank you for your work.

Vernon Park Mall went through a major renovation between late 1991 thru mid 1992. New ceramic tile replaced the original tounge and groove wood flooring, the center court "Pit" was filled in,an interior repaint throughout and the addition of the three illuminated architectural "wings" at the front entrance. I know this because I started my employment there during that time as an electrical/HVAC tech. Having grown up in Kinston, I very much remember how VPM was originally, after the Brody's wing in '81, and after its renovation. On a typical Friday or Saturday night it was almost impossible to find a parking space anywhere. And yes, it truly hurts to see what that mall has become. If only those walls could talk.

I was born and raised in Kinston NC and actually had my very first job at the age of 16 working in the JCPenney at VPM. Stacy's had FANTASTIC hotdogs and was a frequent stop for ice cream as well. Excellent video. Well produced. Captured the eerie vibe from a dead mall. These videos are always so depressing for two reasons. 1) All the effort, money, time and they couldn't keep people coming in the doors, and 2) All that real estate, material, building space going to waste. I wish there was an easy solution to at least find an alternative use for such buildings, like small companies, office space for companies that don't necessarily deal with the public directly. At least the electricity still works.

I grew up in Kinston and still live several miles out. You would not believe how much this place used to thrive. The first restaurant you stopped in with the two levels was named "Staceys". They had good burgers, hot dogs, and seasoned fries. This mall had everything! The Sound Shop was the place to be in the 80's and 90's for albums and the latest CD's. Take Ten was the arcade with all the latest games. Back on the outside of the mall was what us teenagers recognized as "the Hill". We used to cruise around the mall constantly on the weekends and hang out until around 11 or 12pm. It's a shame to see how this place has ended up. The owners jacked up the rent so high that no business can survive there anymore.

I spent many days in that place in the 70's and 80's. I would ride my bike down there and spend all day. In 1982, I got my first job at Chick Fil A. They competed with Harold's Family Favorites down the hall. Near where that Brody's was built in early 80's, the Barrel of Fun was a huge hit as a video arcade. Spent many quarters there! There was a fountain near the center of the place...and a stage, I think. Tobacco and DuPont left town...so the economy of Kinston suffered. If you go, stop by Mother Earth brewery instead and eat at The Chef and the Farmer restaurant! Then watch “A Chef’s Life” on PBS to learn more about Ktown.

There was planters and seats near the entrance to Belks and JC Pennys. It also had a brick seating area near the entrance where there was a shallow pool with water fountains that we called the wishing well. When they had big events there, the made a stage to fit over the pool. Freddy Fender and Richard Petty were 2 of many Celebrities that I saw there in the 60's and 70's...

I recall them doing renovation work to the mall about 2004, when the front entrance had the blue steel sloped roofs added, as before all the mall had was flat roofs. The brick walls were painted the current hues, but before they were a buff yellow toned color with dark brown accents. You can see arches with narrow columns of brick one wide protruding as the original design in the masonry through the paint job, on the outside of Belk and JC Penney. It was the raised brick details which were the brown bricks, to give the walls a contrasting look like that of an arched bridge with multiple segments. The rest of the original two-story building only had the columns of brick one wide all the way up to the cornice without the arches. The outside of the one-story addition has formed concrete panels framed by brick, as I also remember were dark brown. I recall the cornice over JC Penney had decorative concrete panels, before they were replaced with the current flat panels. Since I moved to Kinston in 1992, next to the theatre in the out parcel is a duplex storefront building, where numerous short lived restaurants were located, such as Tommy's, Sapphires, and more recently Capones, but most of the time the space has been vacant.

OMG! I grew up in Kinston. Vernon Park Mall was a big teenager hangout when I was in high school. My mother used to work at the mall...first at Belk's in the china department, then at Brody's, one of the anchor stores; Brody's was eventually bought out by Proffit's. I spent a lot of hours shopping at the mall when I first had money. I remember using a lot of the money earned from my part-time job to buy clothes for college at the Vernon Park Mall JCPenney. There was a big arcade there at the mall, too. Vernon Park Mall was actually a bustling place when I was growing up; Kinston was sort of the commerce hub for the small farming communities in the surrounding region. For many of them, making the trip to Kinston was a big deal back in the day. Above the mall, up a small hill, there was a two-screen movie theater, a Beach Bingo and a grocery store, at one time a Winn-Dixie. My memory is fading now, but I think the mother of either Charles Shackleford or Jerry Stackhouse opened up a country restaurant on that little strip mall on the hill a few years after I left for college. My father died in 2017, and I haven't been back to Kinston since the funeral. At that time, Belk was still operating and the only other tenant I knew of was the DMV, and it was rumored that Belk would be closing soon. I see by your video that has apparently happened.

I have a solution for a lot of these malls. In these small communities, the local government has dated infrastructures. Being that this mall is 50 years old, the spaces can be repurposed for many things the rural communities need but might be falling apart. Many of these places need to be torn down and rebuilt. But a lot of these places could utilitze these abandoned shopping centers for up to a decade while plans are enacted. Some of the ideas that could go into them: Post Office Retirement Homes Indoor Farms Breweries 24hour Medical Department Public Service Offices/Courtrooms Indoor Long Term Storage Intermodal Transit/Bus/Taxi Station Schools and Community Colleges Public Libraries Etc... The space is there and I guarantee the infrastructure is there. I also bet the rent would be negotiable just to get tenants.

I was raised in Kinston and the mall was ALWAYS the place to hang out. I started “hanging out” there around 1990. Stacy’s had the best pizza subs and fries, sound shop was the place to buy all your favorite music and concert tickets, chick-fil-a was down by the little dmv office…If you couldn’t find someone, they were probably at the mall. If you weren’t hanging inside, you were hanging outside in the parking lot, and if you weren’t hanging in the parking lot then you were driving your car around the mall repeatedly. The hangouts there were like no other. Literally groups of friends just standing around at every corner and it seemed like everyone knew everyone. I remember the dance studio upstairs where I took dance lessons. Dance etc was the name of it. It was definitely always the place to be. Too bad it’s a waste now.

I went there often to a candy shop owner by a old couple, the arcade next to it. And the pet shop that was there. The pet shop was exiting to me because they had a TIGER surrounded by koi. And a monkey in a diaper. Now thinking of it, it’s messed up but when your a kid, you have no thought. Beside Dollar Tree was Chick-fil-a and in front of it was Footlocker. Through the glass doors to the parking lot was one of the big hang out spots for kids, and long ago catty corner to the parking lot was one of two movie theaters in town (I remember watching the Ninja Turtles movie there). It saddens me to see the mall like this, but this is the result of bad decisions from older folks in power. BK

Yes. The mall initially had a rectangular fountain located beside the elevator (at 19:19), on the side nearest the center "intersection" spot of the mall. The fountain was removed in the mid to late '70's, for whatever reason. As far as I know, the center intersection area never contained a fountain, although that area was remodeled several times through the years, from elevations, to benches, to flower containers, etc.

I grew up in this Mall. I have tons and tons of stories. Bought my first Star Wars figure at the Roses before it was renovated. Cant tell you how many quarters I spent at the Barrel of Fun (then turned to Take Ten) Arcade. There was a K & K Toys beside the arcade (before K & B) Bought my first concert ticket (Grateful Dead Greensboro 89) at The Sound Shop, and later on Belks had a ticketmaster in the back. Stacys was our little hang out and Harolds was on the corner before Stacys, I remember there was a shoe store that had a monkey in a cage in the back. The Doughnut Man. Eckards drug store. Hallmark store. Everybody got their ears pierced at the little kiosk in the middle of the mall. Walden books. The sugar shop across from the Chick Fila. Got my first pair of Kangaroos, and throwing stars from the Sportscard? I think that is what it was called. We use to skateboard in and around the mall every weekend. There was Tshirt place that did heat transfers on shirts...I had Smurf baseball jersey with my name on the back that I wore to the skating rink on the weekend night we where not at the mall. Got my first Iron Maiden shirt there too. My aunt worked at JCPennys or as we called it Pennys. I remember when Brodys opened and it was the upscale store...we didnt shop there much but I did get a couple of swatch watches from there....and yes I wore them both at the same time on the the same arm. There was cool old black man that use to be in the mall every single day. They called him House...He made these amazing huge hats and canes and walked the mall daily, had gold teeth. John Vacuum cleaner shop was also a magic shop and joke store. Our dentist Dr. Hoodock was upstairs....he smoked and when you went there and he did work on your mouth you could taste it. My parents would drop us off every Friday or Sat. night we would hand out at the mall then walk to the movie theatre and they would pick us up at 11. After they stopped us from cruising Fairfield Park we would cruise around the mall and burger king. We did everything at the Mall...Everything.
