I read that Fred Savage, the actor playing the young boy, was devastated when he learned he didn't have and scenes with Andre the Giant. Having wanted the part mostly because he was a fan of Andre's. When Andre learned this he randomly showed up on set just to meet the boy. And for the remainder of his life would send Fred hand written Christmas cards every year, to his "biggest" fan..

@@VerowakReacts it was a lot of fun! They showed the movie and afterwards Elwes told stories and answered a some questions from the audience. It’s a traveling show - not sure where it’s going next. Like the IMDB trivia you mentioned about the writer saying “OMG she’s on fire!” Elwes told that one too. He said the they had a fire safety briefing, but do you know who wasn’t there? William Goldman…. Later he said director Rob Reiner said, “ Bob, the book you wrote has Buttercup catch fire in the swamp. The screenplay you wrote has Buttercup catch fire in the swamp so we are having her catch fire in the swamp.

According to Cary Elwes's book about The Princess Bride, while on set André the Giant once let out a 16-second fart and brought the whole production to a standstill. The set went quiet and no one said anything for several seconds afterward, until director Rob Reiner, asked, "Are you OK, André?" André replied, "I am now, boss."

Which is how it should be imo. I LOVE when the actors put in so much effort so that they, themselves, can do the majority of things like this. It gives the director so much more freedom with camera angles, because they don't have to avoid the faces in the shots, because it's the real actors. Sadly, they don't do it nearly as much these days. So the fight scenes are cut to hell.

@@LucianDevine True, although a lot depends on the casting, if you cast people capable of such training then great,if you cast someone who looks the part but can hardly move then you have to resort to other options. Also many actors are working on several projects at the same time and don't always have the time to train, the likes of Keanu Reeves and Viggo Mortensen still give their all for a part.

@@xenontouchstone Naturally, which of course depends on the part being cast, the casting director, etc. I'm naturally talking about roles like this, younger roles played by younger actors/actresses, when looking the part shouldn't be an issue and mobility shouldn't be an issue. At that point, it's entirely about the actor themselves, and how much work they are willing to put in.

41:20 Sometimes even the actors get too caught up in the moment and forget they are in a movie. One of the most famous is at the end of Star Wars Ep4: A New Hope. A triumphant Luke descends from his X-Wing after destroying the Death Star and sees Princess Leia running towards him. In the joy of the moment he shouts out "Carrie!" instead of "Leia!" They left that take in the movie.

Robin Wright (Buttercup) tells a story about Andre the Giant. She says the cast went horseback riding on a day when they had a break from filming and got caught in freezing rain on the way back. She says that Andre looked over and saw her shivering and, casually, like it was the most natural thing in the world, he rested his enormous hand on her head like a hat. She says that not only did his hand both keep the rain off and warm her up surprisingly well, but the gesture made her feel safe. In the interview I saw where she told the story, she choked up a bit during the story, saying that he was a super kind person. Arnold Schwarzenegger actually has a funny story I recommend looking up about the man. Arnold says that when you went somewhere with Andre, his friends payed for *nothing,* and he liked going to really expensive places. Arnold says that he started feeling like a leech and decided that he was going to pay the next time no matter what...the rest of the video is him telling the story of the aftermath of that decision. Its really funny and rather than telling the story here, I recommend just searching Arnold's interview about Andre the Giant. He tells it better than I could.

His personal favorite line is the "I have been in the revenge business so long, now that it is over, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life." My very favorite scene in the whole show is when the boy asks grandfather to read it again tomorrow, and grandfather looks over his shoulder and says "As you wish." My absolute favorite movie of all time. Wonderful reaction! Cary Elwes wrote a book called "As You Wish..." about this movie and the experiences they had making it. It is absolutely worth a read and you should absolutely read it. Inigo's survival was a curiosity for sure, but it is easily explained. During the scene on the castle wall he got a taste of the miracle pill, just enough to keep him from dying from his wounds, though his lifelong mission and his hallmark line gave him the drive to keep fighting. In 1990 I started dating a girl who was also a huge Princess Bride fan. We watched the movie often together, and we would quote it back and forth to each other any chance we got, working quotes into normal conversations and everything. It was great fun, at least for us, and we're still good friends today and will occasionally send each other a text of a line from the movie. She had one thing she loved doing which drove me bonkers. Anytime I was talking and said that something was possible, she would immediately quietly say "Pig" as Westley did when insulting Humperdinck. It had the unfortunate effect (unfortunate for me, wildly funny for her) of derailing my train of thought every single time, leaving me to gape at her while I tried to remember what I had been talking about. 😀

Cary and Mandy spent every spare minute on set practicing their fencing, until they were so proficient that the only shot that needed a stuntman was the summersault. The albino jailer Mel Smith, began his comedy career in a tv series alongside Rowen Atkinson, and the Bishop Peter Cook gave John Cleese his break into tv. He's most famous as part of the comedy duo Pete & Dud, along with Dudley Moore.

No, not a birthday present for the Grandson, more likely a Christmas present! There are hints among the bedroom set decor. Regarding the ROUSes and Westley's "I don't think they exist" said to Buttercup: Westley didn't want to scare her by himself showing fear. You did a wonderful job with this reaction, Ms. V; it's an added joy to get to see the movie's highlights along with a witty, with-it viewer who appreciates the nuances of moviemaking.

They also spend the entire day reading the book: we start fairly early; we see them eating lunch around midpoint, and it must be evening or early night when Grandpa tells the boy he should go to sleep. There's a lovely YT video I wish I could find again that observes there are two love stories going on here: Buttercup and Westley; and the grandfather and the boy, who starts out complaining about grandpa coming over, and ends by asking grandpa to come back tomorrow to read the story again. (I'd argue that Fezzik and Inigo are another love story, not necessarily sexual, but a strong, loving connection).

I first saw this movie with a friend on a sneak preview weekend.. the theater was almost empty. There were scratches and lines all through the Fire Swamp scene and when we told the manager, he said he knew and he had a new print coming. He gave us passes to come back the next weekend. Now, this is 1987, way before Internet - so word of mouth was the only way sleeper movies happened... the next weekend, the theater was literally Standing Room Only. Word of mouth from the sneak was so good, everyone had to go see it. My (then future) wife saw it that summer with a friend also... but this quickly became "our movie" even though it wasn't the first movie we saw together... and still is to this day. (The first movie we saw together was an extremely predictable and forgettable RomCom called "Can't Buy Me Love" which starred a VERY young Patrick Dempsey - Dr. McDreamy from Grey's Anatomy.)

Glad you enjoyed this one. It's one of my all-time favourites, and it's very re-watchable, as you say. Many reactors have wondered much the same as you did about Vizzini, and why Inigo and Fezzik didn't simply throw him overboard when he started barking at them. But you need to understand, he recruited them at the absolute lowest point of their lives. Vizzini touches on it briefly in that scene, but the novel by William Goldman goes into more detail about Inigo and Fezzik's backstories, and just how desperate they were when he found them. In fact, he probably made sure to look for strong men to hire in just such a situation, so that no matter how Vizzini treated them or what he demanded, they'd be to dependent on him to mutiny. And there was a chance for Vizzini to win that battle of wits. If you remember, Westley asked him, "Where is the poison?", rather than, "Which cup is it in?" If his opponent had been just a bit more clever, he would have realized that Westley's question left open the possibility that the poison was in both chalices, and that there was a safe option to drink from: The bottle.
@hitherfetcher
@hitherfetcher 2 ай бұрын
Hello, Lady! My contribution to the Trivia Dump, particularly about the clever writing: In the Battle of Wits, Westley gave Vizzini a fair chance - he didn't say "which cup is poisoned," he said "where is the poison?" (V was correct that he could choose neither the cup in front of him or W) and he said "and we both drink" (the bottle was still right there). After W explained that iocane was odourless and undetectable, master tracker Humperdinck took one sniff of the container and immediately said "Iocane." While at Miracle Max's, W did say "true love," but M was right when he said "to bluff." In his confrontation with H, W won the day with a bluff...

I relate so hard to the giggling and blushing when Westley comes on screen. Cary Elwes is just a gem, both as an actor and a man. My favorite role of his other than Westley and Robin Hood was in a recent Netflix rom com called A Castle for Christmas where he plays opposite Brooke Shields as a grumpy Scottish Duke. The movie is cheesy as hell but also adorable and Cary is gorgeous (total dilf). He has also been in stuff like Saw, Stranger Things, Twister, Psych, Operation Fortune, Glory, and he even had a small role in the most recent Mission Impossible movie. He has had a fascinating career, playing every kind of character from Pope John Paul II to Ted Bundy. You can always trust him to pick an interesting project over a marketable one. Either way he's usually my favorite thing about whatever he's in.

@@VerowakReacts It's much easier to recognize him when he's using his iconic English accent. He's a talented mimic and enjoys changing his voice/dialect for different roles. I think that although the showdown with Vizzini was not truly a battle of wits, it was so indirectly. In the sense that if you can get your adversary to accept your duel-to-the-death terms sight unseen, you have already outwitted him. As for Inigo's possibly fatal wounds, well, he just needs to buy another miracle.

Early in the movie it was said "As you wish" really meant "I love you". When the grandfather said "as you wish" as he left at the end, he meant it that way. When Rugen hit Westley on the head with his sword hilt, it originally wasn't convincing because Christopher Guest didn't want to hurt Cary Elwes. So they did it again and Cary said to hit him properly. Christopher did, but accidentally too hard. Cary actually was knocked out and they used that take. When he slumped afterwards, he wasn't acting!

The Princess Bride is one of the most quotable films ever. André the Giant was the perfect Fezzik. In my mind, no one could ever replace Mandy Patinkin as Iñigo Montoya. Mandy is a star of stage and film and television. His performance on stage in Tony Award winning The Secret Garden (1991), was a delight. And while Wallace Shawn’s Vizzini is a rather two dimensional villain (as he was meant to be), check him out in My Dinner with Andre (1981). Fred Savage (the grandson), starred in The Wonder Years (1988-1993) and the grandfather, Peter Falk, is most famous for his role in television as the police detective, Lt. Columbo. The Princess Bride is the one of Robin Wright’s earliest films. She is also famously known for her role in Forrest Gump (1994) with Tom Hanks, as Gump’s girl, Jenny. If you want to see an even younger Cary Elwes, there’s Lady Jane (1986) with a very young Helena Bonham Carter in the starring role. Elwes got the role of Wesley because of his performance in Lady Jane.

I love little movies like this that weren't huge box office draws but they were brilliant anyway and persisted through decades. To put Andre the Giant into "perspective " Carey Elwes is 6ft 5in and is dwarfed by Andre. Also the pose you commented on after Vizzini was dispatched was directly influenced by Andre. He had a 3 wheeler- predecessor to today's 4 wheelers. They were notoriously easy to tip Andre convinced Carey to take it for a spin , tipped it and broke his foot. When the scene was shot he was deliberately balancing on one foot hence the exaggerated pose.

Christopher Guest, the guy who played Count Rugen, the six-fingered man, really bonked Cary on the head with the pommel of his sword. He had to get stitches! Christopher has been in some other cult classic movies. Namely, "This is Spinal Tap," a mockumentary about a rock band. But, I think the funnest mockumentary he made is with his old "Spinal Tap" band mates called "A Mighty Wind." It's about a folk singer convention. It's super funny and endearing. I hope you check out "A Mighty Wind!"

My experience is that when facing a left handed fencer I find the security of the cross of the 'same hand' makes choosing my left hand makes up for the lower dexterity I have in my offhand... (I can more easily switch hands (left-left) than to modify tactics to fight left-right... particularly for my favourite weapon, which is messer... though I have had enough practice to make that a less secure proposition - more recently I find that I can use the 'wrong' angles of left-right fencing to my advantage slightly more often than they cause me problems).
