The song was written for the former bassist of the band. I think the silence at the end of the song was to respect him. At the end, the guitarist becomes very emotional. You can see from his face ...

What a wonderful reaction. Thank you so much for this! I loved how you picked up on the drums and a lot of the little things happening in the background. There is already a lot of information in the comments. Just to back this up a bit. Versailles was founded in 2006 by Hizaki [guitar on the right] who was already known as a solo artist and his childhood friend, bassist Jasmine You [he has been a part of Hizaki's solo project but wasn't very well known before that since all the bands he played in disbanded within months of their formations]. They quickly got Kamijo [vocals] on board whose band Lareine had just disbanded after 12 years in 2006 and after a good year of searching Yuki [drums] and Teru [guitar on the left] were found to join the band [these three guys had a pretty clear vision of the band and really wanted to get the right members for this project.] In 2009 their management suddenly announced that Jasmine You would leave the band for health reasons - he died only 6 days later. One year later Masashi joined as their new bassist but the band announced that Jasime You would always be a member of the band [it is not as common for long running bands in Japan to exchange members, even after their death. But they felt that Masashi should be a full member instead of a just a session musician as that wouldn't fit their style of music.] Obviously, this band is very technical and if you ever listen to Jupiter you will hear just how technical, but to me they will never reach the endless beauty and emotion of Versailles. Kamijo, Hizaki and Teru are usually credited as composers for Versailles. In addition to other people's suggestions I would like to recommend The Love from a Dead Orchestra or the instrumental Silent Knight [live with Jasime You] here are links kzfaq.info/get/bejne/htB5ppR0rdi1c5c.html [The Love from a Dead Orchestra] kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pa59pryf1ci0pnU.html [Silent Knight]

Yes the crowd was silent. The performance of this song in fact the entire concert was dedicated to the memory of their original bassist Jasmine You. The crowd knew that the band was going to do a moment of silence for Jasmine which is why they stayed silent. Jasmine passed away in 2009. At the beginning of August it was announced Jasmine was taking a leave from the band due to health reasons. August 9th Jasmine passed away. Masashi the current bassist was Jasmines best friend and when he was asked to fill in on their world tour he felt it was the best way he could honor Jasmines memory. 6 months later he was made an official member of Versailles. The reason this performance was dedicated to Jasmine was it had always been Jasmines dream to play Budokan. On Versailles 10th anniversary as a band they were invited to play Budokan thus fulfilling Jasmines dream. A band can not ask to play Budokan you only play there by invitation only. Versailles started their 15th anniversary tour last year. Hizaki asked on his Instagram page if there was any interest for Versailles to play in the US. I don't know if they will. They sell out worldwide.... South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand and in Canada but have never really broken into the US market. I ❤️ LOVE Versailles and I will travel to see them. Check out these live songs by them: Masquerade, Ascendead Master, After Cloudia, Revanant Choir, just to name a few. BTW, Versailles has been classified as symphonic neoclassical power metal . Loved your reaction to them

One of the best reactions to this song I've seen. Thanks! If you want to check out more of their stuff I would recommend "Masquerade" or "Ascendead Master" for shorter, more straight-forward songs, or "God Palace" for another longer song. This song btw was written as a tribute to their first bass player, who died in 2009. It had always been their dream to play in Budokan Hall one day, and with this live they finally did it, and they added the extra long pause at the end as a moment of rememberance, which would explain the utter silence. Kamijo (the vocalist) even slightly changed the lyrics right after the pause, which usually say "And in that place in the dreams we saw" to "And in THIS place in the dreams we saw", because they now where in that very place they had dreamed of.

Never seen this band, but when they were on hiatus some years ago all the members other than the vocalist formed the band Jupiter, which I have seen, including a shared bill with girl-band Mary's Blood. Don't follow Versailles and am not very familiar with them but I know their Japanese fans call themselves "roses", and the band has referred to itself as "the descendants of the rose", which was the subtitle of one of their albums. There was a manga in the early 1970s called "The Rose of Versailles" and it has had a big influence on Japanese popular culture, creating memes and tropes that have survived for 50 years. Maybe that's the reference.

although I´m no friend of costume and/or masks on a metal/rockband, I just have to say: this was awesome and touching! japans rock/metal scene is so rich and they are not afraid to mix genres, whereas elsewhere conservative metal gatekeepers are "protecting" the "real" metal. not even keyboards allowed. thas why I love japanese rock(metal (metal from northern europe too). so I want to give you a recommendation (not request, so no pressure): four women backed by a solid metal band. "wagamama rakia - survive" live at usen studio tour finale 2021. you won´t be disappointed.

The audience culture in Japan is that you're there as a contributor to the show. To give everything to the band as one. In return the band gives everything back to the audience, again as one. It's a group respect thing. Making the show the best it can be. However it's not all quiet though. I've seen wild Japanese audiences moshing so hard they were sure to have injuries. But again, that's the same ideology, they mosh where it's expected, they're quiet in moments like this. One thing I saw is they are absolutely silent during spoken/mc parts too. Even in small venues with the aforementioned mosh crowds, absolute respectful silence when the vocalist was doing a talking section. In vk some of the speaking parts are very caring, intimate almost. The connection between band and fan palpable. I want to go there. Here an artist speaks and it's hostility, politics, and abuse while Kevin in the front row is talking about chihuahuas or whether he's having tacos or burgers after the show... In fact it's Kevin doing that during the moment of silence too. (apologies to anyone called Kevin, it's the other Kevin... Um...) Anyway, that's why the silence is so strong. As for the genre, apart from the self titled which was very diverse in genre, they're very much a symphonic prog band. The synths/orchestration gets dialled back in the live shows to accompaniment levels, but the studio versions it's much more prominent. Which is great, you get a dual experience with something a little heavier and powerful live, and more elaborate and musical on the album. Costuming is French Rococo, with some artistic licence. They have a vampire backstory to go with the image. Their theme is the extremes of aestheticism and beauty. All the songs are written around this. This show was long. 2.5 to 3 hours. And this was one of about four in a section dedicated to Jasmine (the former bassist, and eternal member) After the butterfly is shown it morphs into a cherub in the next song, and of course I bawled my eyes out. Another little homage, all of the members have dark feathers on their costumes. Jasmine's outfit featured an enormous and magnificent feather headpiece, so Jasmine was there as a part of the outfits too. At the end of every show they bring out Jasmine's bass when the band take their bows. Highly recommend you check out the studio version of this song in your own time, just to hear the different placing of the symphonic elements. Great reaction.

Hi! I'm a huge fan of Versailles from Mexico and traveled to Japan to this particular concert and I can tell you this was a real silent moment. We as fans already knew the meaning of this song (I saw already some people explained here to you so I won't do it again) so it was a very meaningful moment for them as a band and we as fans understood it. Also, the purple butterfly was one of the "symbols" of Jasmine, tha's why they put a purple buttlerfly. Also for the record, none of them had ever used purple on their costumes and also there is a rumour that says they're using at least one feather with this costumes in honor of Jasmine (he also used a lot of feathers). Of Versailles, another good choices are God Palace (composed by KAMIJO, the vocalist) or ASCENDEAD MASTER (composed by HIZAKI, the red dressed guitarrist). By the way, Faith and Decision was composed on music by HIZAKI and lyrics by KAMIJO. Of their other projects: from Jupiter ARCADIA or CLASSICAL ELEMENT are good choices, and from KAMIJO solo work, Symphony of the Vampire is a MASTERPIECE. Glad you like them! I'll definetly check your reactions, I enjoyed this one a lot :)

Visual Kei is a thing over in Japan. 4 Visual metal bands is gonna tour in Japan together Versailles, D, Moi dix Mois and Matenrou Opera. Oki.. I thought you got the version with English subtitles. There is some thing that is nerdy to know about this video. Playing at Bodukan was their former bass player's wish. He passed away too soon. SO.. the black feathers they wear is a reminder of him 'couse he had black feathers on stage. I don't know if it is true but I have read that the first lady of Japan was on this concert. Versailles is one of her fav bands. So they was super nervous at this concert. The silent moment was for remember Jasmine You, the old bassplayer. So on top of being super nervous this song is very emotional for the band! You can se that very clear on Teru's face time to time (Guitarist with no dress).

Very cool reaction! Your wording at one point when you were giving your thoughts afterwards was interesting - you mentioned "Aristocrats going to the symphony". One of Versailles' two breakout songs at the start of their career was actually a song called "Aristocrat's Symphony"! A bit about Faith & Decision: This particular song was written as a tribute to their original bassist who passed away unexpectedly due to a medical condition. The dramatic pause they take is supposed to be intended as a moment of silence for the bassist, so in general the audiences are very respectful of that. I can't say for sure as I wasn't at this particular show, but I'd suspect that the silence in the video is unedited. One other neat thing is that the late bassist tended to use a lot of butterfly imagery in their costuming. If you keep a careful eye out in this video, you'll notice a butterfly appearing prominently in the stained glass backdrop at a few points in the song. If you're looking for some additional songs to check out from them, God Palace is another pretty epic one with some prog elements to it. Less proggy but still excellent choices are Aristocrat's Symphony, Ascendead Master, Philia, and Masquerade. I'd also recommend giving the singer's debut solo EP a shot. It's called Symphony of the Vampire and it's an excellent symphonic metal listen clocking in around 30 minutes in total.
