Vertical Aquarium Conversion for Crested or Gargoyle Gecko | DIY Vertical Vivarium/Terrarium

How to make a cost-effective vertical terrarium/vivarium out of a standard Aqueon 20 gallon (high) fish tank. This is especially cost effective if you plan to make 3-4 of these as the aquarium hinge is now more expensive than when I started the first tank a year and a half or so ago.

Is the top glass or mesh. Was wondering how you add light and heat to the glass top. If mesh did you have to cut the glass on the top (side)?

It's glass. The light for the plants comes through, and my house is warm enough I don't have to add heat.

Hiya.. I'm new to the hobby and I have a 20 Gallon Long. I'm assuming this conversion works for that lol. I'm planning on converting my tank into a terrarium for a Gargoyle gecko

I am currently housing a chahoua gecko in a 20 gallon long tank on its side and used the iheartgeckos conversion kit. Do you have a recommendation on a heating system for a tank with a glass top? I have an led light but because there's no mesh and only a glass top I can't use a regular dome heat fixture. I know everyone claims they can live in room temperature but I'm from a cold climate and my room temperature is about 63-65 degrees. A heat mat just isn't cutting it right now because it's only heating the glass.

Leah Gorelik I don’t... all the critters that require heat in my collection have mesh tops. I would recommend moving her to a warmer place in the house. There are micro climates all over. Use your temp gun to figure that out. Alternatively, move her to a 18x18x24 exo terra which works out at over 30 gallons and is better for a full-grown chahoua anyway.

@@EngagingEcosystems thanks for the suggestions! Eventually I will be moving her but since she's a small juvenile I thought anything bigger she would have a hard time finding her food. I will look into that, thanks! :)

how do you heat the tank if its a horizontal tank flipped vertically without cutting and doing all of that gluing? in the winter time my room is the coldest in the house I don't have heaters or anything and I'm basically dying. And in the summer time my room is the hot hot est in the house so like what do I do about winter time??

Then you can’t flip it, you’ll need to keep it upright and use a mesh top to run heaters. I can keep them warm enough without added heat where I have the tanks.

@@little_robin I just saw that it’s hot in the summer too. You need to put them somewhere it will stay consistently in the 70s in the summer and not go below 65 too often in the winter. They are from a very temperate climate and too hot (extended time over 85) can be deadly. So if you have a place that meets this temp requirements, you don’t need to add heat in the winter.

I’m curious how you light it through the glass. Do you provide UV light? And what about plant grow lights?

Im sorry I missed this. Plants don’t need specific grow lights. I’m using nicrew aquarium lights on these. I don’t use UV for them. If I ever redo their tanks I may consider very low uv as an option but it’s not absolutely necessary for these nocturnal critters as long as your supplement game is good. Obviously you can’t use UV through glass so it would have to be an upright tank with mesh lid.
