Also, just a tip I can add. I can't afford this vertical system but I was fortunate enough to find the smaller vertical pots through Dollar tree this year. Not sure if they are still sold out or not. So since they are smaller I was worried about it tipping as we can have strong winds here. So what I have done is I bought T-posts that I am going to put in around the stacks and that should keep them upright in case of any hard winds that come along. I will probably do 3-4 T-posts (one per side me thinks) as a stabilizer for them.

I just broke down and got one. I told myself yesterday that I wouldn't spend any more money on my garden. So cool. I was literally up-potting my pepper plants into this exact pro-mix when I clicked on your video to watch. It's my first time using the mix and I really like it. It was definitely the most economical and best looking mix at Walmart. I always try to avoid Miracle Grow and other cheap mixes with chemical fertilizers. Someday soon I'd like to try one of those vertical towers, it's on my wishlist!

I just got a greenstalk. I bought the yellow bag ($17) & red bag($20) of pro mix. The yellow bag had rocks & lots of sticks in it, hardly any perlite. The red bag had a good amount of perlite, & way less sticks.

I love the idea of the towers and the smaller determinate tomatoes. I had Boxwood Basil last year. I didn't like the taste, but the plant was beautiful. I have a few different kinds of basil seeds to try next year, or the year after, depending how things go. Meanwhile, living vicariously through you and loving it. 🤗

I purchased one of these towers (Gary, you're costing me $$$!) but I LOVE the thing! The build quality is outstanding, made in the US. Highly recommend the 6-wheel castor/drain tray if on a wooden deck - it has a drain hose you can hang off the deck so you don't get wood rot under the tower. One drawback - the drain hose is only about 12"... had to go buy a 3' hose so I can turn the tower (for sun exposure to all sides) and still let the water drain off the deck (rather than keep turning when I water to get the hose to drain off the deck only because I'm libel to forget to turn and aim the hose). Looking at buying another one... next thing I know my deck will look like Gary's with half a dozen towers... Gary, you're dangerou$$$! BTW, thank you for the expeditious shipping of my trays and seeds - arrived and planted! Awesome vids as always, Beers! Cheers!

Sorry but good news is the tower I have is on year 5 being outside 24/7. No cracking or degrading. LOL. I know it a forest of towers there. Wow I didn't think you could put the tomatoes in that small of a container. I got the Bonnie dwarf tomato plants this year as I failed terribly with heirlooms last year, but I put them in 5 gallon grow bags. I guess that was over kill. Well, I will know better next year. Thanks for sharing this

Yeah the indeterminate can be managed in 5 gallon but it is hard. I know recommend 10 and these Green Stalk towers have 7 gallons in each tier. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN I have the indeterminate in a 7 gallon grow bag. It is a miniature so it won't get more that 3 feet tall. The rest are in 5 gal

It’s hard to find a decent potting mix near me. Our Walmart has it but only in potting soil I love it. So many times I had to put off picking up soil because I couldn’t lift it. Finally a quality product that is easy to use. I wish we had the other varieties 🙌🏻

Some did get in. This stuff is really loose and am sure it got washed down. But.. is best to be more careful as to no clog up anything. So these stack and unstack really easily. If you are handy you could sink a pole and drill holes in each Tier and drop them on. The one I was setting up has sat in the sun for 5 season. Actually outdoors 24/7. No cracking or degrading. Very nice video. Any pro tips on keeping the moisture level good in towers? I struggle to get towers to grow well. I've got it down for strawberries which is awesome but tomatoes peppers etc. I'm struggling.

It just varies too much based on the medium, plants and temps. But a higher peat base works well, and maybe a drip irrigation system is needed in your area. Great video! When would you fertilize with fish emulsion? In your previous videos, you typically watered in with fish emulsion after transplanting.

Not for 3 feet or less. I did grow some indeterminate from the bottom and trailed them up the tower and planted the vine in pockets. But that was too much work. I don't know where to ask so I'll ask here.. For indeterminate tomatoes that get huge can I plant them in a small 3.64 gallon pot ("5" gallon nursery basic black pot) as long as I use a method of saving space like the pruned stake method? This method requires training a single stem up a pole which should allow for more tomatoes in a smaller area, smaller yield per tomato plant but overall higher system yield. If I fill up a bunch of 3.64 gallon pots that I have, ultimately it's better than no tomatoes I guess..

No. You will need atleast 5 gallons of space and nowadays I recommend 10 gallons. Their water needs and roots systems are massive. If they pot dried out once you wreck normal growth. Brain says 1 tomato per 10 gal times 100 gal would allow for 10 tomatoes each... Anyhow it probably beats $18/10 gal hardware store containers

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I actually ended up going and getting 6 used 15 gallon planters from my local nursery because that's all I really need, but volume is a weird concept. I am not even sure if I got a better or worse deal than your store. Since volume is generally a cubic function, (increase a box of 2 inches to 3 inches and you go from 8 to 27 cubic inches) 100 gallons really doesn't look that much bigger than a 15 gallon pot (as you increase the radius, the volume would be increasing by 2*pi*radius*height from calculus I think). It's worrying that as a math major I'm worried about containers this much.. It's also very annoying to go around stores and see labeled 20 gallon pots that are really 20" which comes out to like really 13 gallons. I can tell these 15 gallon nursery plastic pots I have are realistically closer to 10... TLDR: I think you'd save people a lot of money with a video on how to decipher containers based on inches, nursery vs dry gallons, plant needs etc. and how volume is deceivingly rapid at increasing when you increase container "size".

So out of caution I would say yes. Anything indoors I do sterilize for any product when seed starting. Outdoors I just use Pro-Mix as is and never had issues. If you buy towers make sure you got towers that have UV sun protection. Or they brittle and crack after one season. These cost more but I see them as an investment over 5-10 years. They hold up. I must say that these vegetable towers are expensive for what you get. Saves space, perhaps, but your tomatoes will be like a dollar each for those materials. Rich folks gardening...

They are quality and don't degrade from the UV light. Expensive for 1 year but not divided out over 5-10 years. The cheaper version become brittle and crack. Just make sure you get a set from wherever that has full UV sun protection. And deep pockets.
