Vertical Gardening: Tower Growth Update - Amazing Tomatoes, Basil, Greens, Peppers, Herbs & More

This is the 3rd video in the series. I think it is important to see how well you can grow plants in towers. A small foot print of space can pack in a lot of plant growth. Here is how the herbs, tomatoes, beans, flowers, chard, peppers, lettuce, spinach, basil, peas and more have been growing since we planted them up in the first 2 videos in the series.

How u put out this much content blows my mind. Most you tubers try to put as many crappy videos hoping one will go viral, even the more popular “ pro gardening you tubers” mostly recycle old info inserting jokes and current events world wide and in their life to fill out an episode, unlike u bud! You give new info throughout the entire video not bothering to rehash old info or make stupid jokes. Your practical methodical approach to every aspect of gardening is something I find super reassuring because it leaves me with few questions. You know how to do this better than anyone. Thank you!

I was waiting to see the towers again! I bought one a few weeks ago. I chose terra-cotta color. I can't set it up this year, but looking forward to when I can. Thanks for showing yours. They are awesome. Love that you're growing tomatoes in them too. I plan small Tiny Tims, a couple of specialty peppers, strawberries, lettuces, and herbs. Clearly, I'll be buying another tower next year. Thanks for this!

Hi Gary, you've sold me on the tower with edible flowers mixed in with lettuces and Tiny Tim tomatoes(favorite of mine), your garden is spectactular! Your recipie for frost damaged plants really helped my perineals that were leafed out, Thankyou! They've rebounded quickly and no trace of damage..Blessings.

Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to the video on nutrients. Due to where I live, I'm doing nothing but container gardening, and I haven't quite figured out nutrients. I am planning on buying a GreenStalk or two, and wasn't sure of the best way to keep everything healthy. I'd also like info on how much to put into each pocket, when to skip pockets. etc.

The planting spacing I learn as I go. The set up for the soil is in the first video. A good amount of organic fertilizer. I will go over the water soluble fertilizer and talk more about plants etc. Good luck. You just need fish emulsion. I do other stuff but that is optional but Ill talk about it. Gary, I’m loving my Green Stalk. I have the 5 tier but have only plant in 3 so far. As we’re both in MD, your video give me great ideas for what I can add to the other 2 tiers. Would love to get my hands on some dwarf tomato 🍅 seeds. Are they available on your seed shop?

Love the videos, Gary. I’ve heard other channels say beans don’t grow well with peppers. I planted mine with peppers this year and am worried about production. Have you had any issues?

Hi! Not Gary but those are columbine. They come in a variety of colours and those look like 'Canadian Columbine'. Gary, please correct me if I'm wrong. Colours look different IRL vs a screen. They seem to be the colour of the Canadian to me.

Hello Gary, nice video I need an advise, I transplanted my bell peppers into ground and pot and covered with some bottles with holes, they thrived well for few days but later they started falling off weak and I also have slug problem can you please suggest with anything I need to take care.

Slug baits the have iron phosphate or sulfur work well. The can over heat in bottle and such. And look limp. I've never seen dwarf tomatoes in person. Did you grow them by seed? How tall will the ones on the top tier get? I am having trouble with my vertical garden. I planted bush beans in the middle tier (3rd from bottom) and they are really shading the bottom tiers. I have squash and eggplant in those. I have harvested the beans once. I think I am going to pull them and hope there is time for the eggplant to catch on. The squash are a loss but maybe I can plant those again too.

I ordered these as seeds and grew them. Squash will be really hard to do as the get so big. I am not going to do squash. But just take notes and adjust year to year. You can only learn by doing. I would only try 1 squash per tier too if I were planting them. All my strawberries stay outdoors in their pots. The do well. Peppers get so short bamboo poles to support them. They break if you tug to hard but not from their weight. Mine doesn't quite look like that. I have a terrible fungus gnat infestation all over and I think that's why. I've sprayed H202 and soapy water consistently, but there are just too many places for them to hide. I am now putting mosquito bits in the reservoir but not sure that's gonna do the trick either. One thing I will say that I have learned in my very short time of using the greenstalk is to plant crops that have similar fertilization needs in the same tower. Leafies with leafies and fruiters with fruiters.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Great idea for when the plants are small. I never thought of that. Unfortunately, I have a mix of stunted plants and plants doing just fine, so that would involve a lot of leaf crushing. I think that's probably another Greenstalk tip: preventative spraying is critical. Because I find it much harder to use conventional spraying techniques (neem oil, BT, H202, soapy water) to manage the pests after, since the density of plants is so great -- the beauty and curse of the Greenstalk. Also the little pockets under the reservoir areas are hard to access and great little hiding places. Things that work on other areas of my garden once pests are present just can't seem to knock out the problem in the Greenstalk. I still love mine and would totally recommend it, but I am learning how to use it.

I got my seeds from MI Gardener an I checked the package and it shows 24-30 inches but I just went out and measured mine and it is at 52 inches from the bottom of the stalk to top of plant. It is making lots of tomatoes. I planted it in October 2020 and grew it inside until after the freeze in February and then put it on my patio.
