Been out alot from SD on sport boats. Based on all the years I have gone out and talked to captains they all recommend a non braid connection in the bottom, if your chasing 150 or higher. They have seen to many fails with the braided setup. I agree with you on color, it means nothing, after a hundred feet or so all colors are black. The captains say if they are on the chew and if your jig is in the zone that is your best chance. Also, I think your leaders are to short if your fishing braid. If the fish is swimming away and is 5 feet long the braid can rub on their body and fins and snap..seen that many times. Also, if they choke your in trouble. I think mono is better for a small shock factor built in. If your fishing a broom stick with straight braid and an 18 inch flouro leader you really need to pay attention to drag since you have no forgiveness. I like your 130 over the 100, good call there. The phenix axis rods fish at the lower line rating, that 2x is not a 100 lb rod. And 8 foot on a jig drop is a no go, your giving the fish alot more leverage, unless you have a custom extra long foregrip to change the fulcrum, a 7 footer is ideal and can still get around the anchor. Never had a rubbing issue in the death circles. Good video, never heard the gram per foot. Your the expert, I just fish alot and have built up many years of knowledge. But in the end the fish don't care and the newest person on the boat that has never fished wins the jackpot.😂

Great Video thanks for sharing. One thing that I would stress is the difference between vertical jigging, speed jigging and slow pitch jigging. I can’t tell you how many times I hear and see videos of anglers using the term interchangeably. In slow pitch fishing you are using the rod and reel to pitch the jig and create a wounded baitfish action and most bites come on the sink. In Slow Jigging the lure mimics a wounded fish on the fall so anglers let the lure sink past the zone wine it up and let it sink again and repeat. Most bites also happen on the sink. Vertical and speed jig fishing mimic fleeing bait and this the hooks should be on the bottom. As always great info 👍🏼

Love your videos. What knot would you recommend when tying braid to the 6 foot leader swivel?

I usually use a San Diego jam knot. Braid cinches down pretty tight even with larger sizes.

Jeff - I just ordered the crimp kit. Thanks for putting it together. Curious what brand of split rings and swivels are included. - Gary

Great video, well done… but it would be great to know the actual rods and reels models/sizes/specs and leader info for your 80-100-130 braid classes that you are using on each setup. Thanks!

It was covered in Part 1, Penn Fathom 30, 40N and 60 for the 80/100/130. Rods I use Phenix Axis series, 820XH, and 8002XH.

@@ChasingPelagics Thank you. Appreciate the reply. Just FYI in your vid part 1 you didn’t say what reel size nor did you say what rod make and model they were. Your just said they were all Penn Fathom 2-speeds as I had just watched part one before watching part 2 👍🏻

Great. Got this rod too with a makaira 30 SEa II w/ 135 lb izoreline hollow core & a 100 lb topshot 20 ft. Question for you - my abraison leader does it need to be fluoro or is mono ok?
@ChasingPelagics
@ChasingPelagics Жыл бұрын
If you plan to use it during the day use fluorocarbon leader. Only night time mono is fine. Or tie a fluorocarbon leader to your top shot.

Which split ring pliers are you using? Also do you use a snap swivel to tie in to your leader?

I used bubbas in this video, I liked em til I broke a couple of em. Found a silly Amazon pair that I like even better called Calamus that I really like. If I’m fishing braid no leader,I use a snap swivel to the swivel (yes the extra swivel is not needed, but I also use the same setup for trolling). If I have a wind one leader, I’m tying it usually 100lb or less.
