So it can't get back into space. At least it got the Kerbals to Duna in one piece. And they have a nice roof over their head.

well no it used balloons to dampen its landing, and used a parachute before that, and a drogue capsule before that, they didn’t use such a high surface area/mass ratio and those balloons are good at absorbing and dissipating impact force but aren’t heat resistant

It's certainly not the cheapest Duna lander possible. However, parachutes won't cut it if you want to land on higher altitudes on Duna, the atmosphere is really only thick enough in the valleys.

Cheap? A single parachute has a mass of 100 kg and costs $400. Two inflatable heatshields mass 3 tons and cost $4800. I've just test-landed a Mk2 lander can on a 6 km high mountain on Duna with a single parachute. Maximum impact speed of the Mk2 lander can is 20 m/s, and at that altitude a parachute will reduce speed to about 18 m/s, which means the lander can will survive the impact. If you want to land at a lower speed, add some retro-rockets to reduce the impact. A couple of sepratrons will do the trick. Or use the ascent engine if your lander has a proper ascent stage.
@ltdrak
@ltdrak 7 ай бұрын
Cheap not specifically in cost, mostly in thought process. Just bang 4 parts together and drop it on Duna. I did another video with a very cheap cost-wise lander. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLaKeN2Al7PJqok.htmlsi=4jV8gDFYU3URBgx-

I guess the issue is with the amount of time it takes to get to Mars. If something goes wrong with a resupply mission, the next one may not get there on time to be helpful, or there may not be a possible launch window at all.

If you're far enough on the tech tree to get those heat shields, how do you not have enough progress/money/skill to just make a proper lander? I treat all kerbal life as sacred, and ONLY put a kerbal on a moon/planet if they have 1. Full science gear (All currently-unlocked gear) 2. An accompanying engineer 3. Radially-attached Cargo bays stocked with repair kits, EVA tanks, and EVA experiment gear 4. A fully-functioning 2-seater rover I do that because I can't stand to just leave a kerbal on a planet that I know I won't be coming back for, so I at least want them to have all the gear necessary to do future missions, and at least some form of home/entertainment so they don't feel too isolated. I'm one unlock away from getting those heat shields, and they are amazing, but I dunno if I'd have the balls to use them for lithobreaking.
@ltdrak
@ltdrak Жыл бұрын
Basically, this was just a bit of fun in a sandbox game. In my career games I always play with the 4 default kerbals, and if any get stranded I will go and pick them up either with the other kerbals or with an robot vehicle.

@@ltdrak Ahhh, Fair enough. I just don't have the nerve to play in sandbox mode.. I guess I'm too tryhardey.. I feel like I have to earn it, by "beating" the game first, unlocking everything in career mode and mastering all the skills/missions.

@@ltdrak same, however my 3 out of 4 first kerbals got killed in my first mission (before I know how to avoid them being dead, and all) and I had only Valentina left. She became a 'CEO' and was head of every major mission. A good story can fix anything :D
@kulka92
@kulka92 Жыл бұрын
I am even a little bit more crazy with preparation. I do not send kerbals to ground untill I have a orbital station capable of landing on nearby moon and launch with tons of feul and ore. Then any next mission I send require less parts since you can always refuel in orbit of your destination. I just finished building a station for 18 kerbals that holds 24k ore and lands and launches from both Ike and Duna, making it incredibly useful mobile base-station-fuelrig. 800tons of love.
