As first time parents we knew very little about child development until it became obvious at about 13/14 months old that our autistic son Dexter wasn't developing typically. But were there signs of autism before that? We take a walk down memory lane and discuss baby videos of Dexter and possible traits that were present from very early on.

Thank you for this video. This is such an eye opener! My son is 31 and second child and we always knew him as a child he was not like the normal baby and child. Even to this day he is a strange kind of person with all kinds of quirks or social behavior. He would also not sit long in a high baby chair and even in a stroller. Sadly no one could help us identify his condition. And we took him to many professionals including a professor, school psychologist, medical examiner, and Doctor in education. He also did not talk at three years, but as soon he went to the speech therapist he learned very quickly. Even the speech therapist was amazed at how fast he learned.

Here are some things my mother noticed about me when I was a baby: I did not like to be held by anyone including family, I liked to bounce excessively back and forth when sitting, and once I could move I would move away from the sound of voices. The not wanting to be held is particularly noteworthy because physical contact is usually soothing for babies, not stressful. When I became a toddler I would actually be combative towards people trying to pick me up. Caregivers had to pick me up from behind or I would take a swing at them. My mother did eventually teach me to be able to tolerate and appreciate physical contact by the time I was about 5 or 6, so don't panic and think some of these extreme reactions are insurmountable.

I have realized that in the old days when they didn’t have as much information, Those signs would have passed as simple as just a slow development. Just late speakers. But now things can be noticed earlier, we have more info to relate about. Thanks for sharing

We have that experience, too. My eldst daughter is autistic. I knew what sings to look for early on since I took child psychology in school. I realized early on she was exhibiting some signs and I suspected as much, but there were SO many subtle signs I missed that we only realized AFTER my second daughter was born and we got to see the actually difference. Little things, like the amount of engaging my second daughter did compared to my first. My second daughter was always looking at us, copying exactly what we did, interacting with us and snuggling and engaging and communicating in her own baby-type way. But my eldest did her own thing. She wouldn't copy us or necessarily even look at us if we said something like, "Hello!". She didn't like being touched, either. Right from birth she hated people touching her. At 8 months she no longer let me hold her to feed, and at just before two years she refused to ever let me pick her up again. All hugging was done backwards. She didn't smile for the first four months. To us, all of it seemed "normal" except the not smiling. But to further throw things off she had 20 words when she hit a year old, and by the time she turned two she was regularly using 2000 words in full scentences. (When she hit 200 words at a year and 8 months we started writing them down because it was sort of crazy I wanted to remember what they were, then as more and more got added on we just kept making the list). She didn't seem autistic in that sense, but in others things started to become clearer, such as the fact she couldn't use those push-toys that you ride on with wheels. When on playground equipement she would randomly "let go", and fall. She had no gross motor skills to speak of. She didn't learn to ride a trike until she was 4, and not well, either. And she couldn't ride a two wheeler until she was 8. But what really made us get her diagnosed was her interactions with other kids. In preschool her teachers pointed out she handled social situations very oddly for a child her age. She would ask groups of kids playing if "they would mind" of she joined in. In return these other 3 years olds would look at her like she was nuts. They said it was odd she didn't just start playing like other kids would. Then in junior kindergarten when she was 4 I knew it was time to get her tested when it was clear she wasn't acknowledging other children. They'd say hi and she'd just ignore them. They'd give her a birthday invite and she's look at it and put it down and keep walking away. She COULD engage if she was asked to, but she didn't seem to realize on her own that people and friends were a good thing to have. And what's even more amazing is that years later when she talks about her experiences as a young child she remembers starting school and thinking all people, everywhere were like just objects that were there for her to use or interact with if she wanted. She didn't see them as people, like her. Now she does, of course. She's made leaps and bounds over the years in terms of her ability to be social. But at the beginning it was like pulling teeth to get her to realize that people talking to her meant she should talk back. But our second was a natural social butterfly from very early on. It's funny how having something to compare it with (and no 'compare" as in comparing the children, but more the experience) made all the difference in finally understanding what subtle symptoms were there from the beginning.

My daughter wasnt diagnosed with autism until she was in her 30s, although I knew from an early age and tried desperately to get help for her. She was a very early talker like your child and liked to "play" with words and sound. She would also quote from books in stressful situations where she couldnt explain herself. As a two year old I noticed she would play alongside otger children rather than with them, and preferred the company of adults to children. She continued to have issues connecting with her peers and to this day doesnt easily form and maintain relationships. She lives with us as she cant deal with living alone but feels she couldnt live with others as they wouldnt or couldnt deal with her "idiosyncrasies" such a food intoletences and narrow food choices, and not liking to be touched or pushed into living in a way that makes her feel uncomfortable. She is unable to drive as she cant anticipate what other drivers may do and cannot perceive potential hazards. Having said that, without any interventions but with two supportive teacher parents, she has done very well. She works for a university, has two undergraduate degrees in languages and psychology (with first class honours), a masters degree in primary education and is currently completing a PhD in Psychology. A diagnosis of autism is not all doom and gloom. It just means living a different life, with many challenges, particularly when it cones to bullying, harassment and discrimination because of your differences. Unfortunately this is not limited to the school yard and continues into the workplace. Im sorry to say that the worst workplace bullying came from teachers themselves. People who should know better but behave like children rather than mature adults. Fortunately my daughter has found her niche in the tertiary education field, where she is much happier than working in the primary sector. I wish your daughter all the best. It wont be all smooth sailing but with your support, she will be able to live her life her way, which really, is what we all should aim for.

i have a 13 yr old who is severely asd. I know that there were many MANY signs since birth of his autism. I had only been around disabled young adults, older children. So, I didnt completely understand what I was seeing. But now, All the times he did certain things or required being held by me and only me in a somewhat tight manner, he was needing the feeling on pressure and he didnt babble or talk because of asd. He had soooo many signs that a doctor who knew asd, could have seen and had early intervention. But, sadly, doctors had no clue and left me to figure it out on my own. Which I did, but he did suffer from me not knowing how to teach a tot on the spectrum.

My granddaughter was the 5th child of my daughter and because she was a neglectful mom, Grace never got screened or helped until she was 4, but now that she is with some caring and loving fosters, she is doing amazing and we are all so heartwarmed. I remember her as a baby and showing many signs that my daughter refused to acknowledge. Grace didn't even want anyone else to look at her much less hold her or cuddle her. Now Grace carries on conversations with us and her sisters and is integrating into a regular classroom. Because of her progress we call her amazing.. Amazing Grace. You can't even cuddle her enough now she is so loving and interactive with everybody !!

We have an older grandson who is autistic, he is high functioning, very clever but on the go constantly. Has alot of sensory issues, styms and masks alot. Our 12mth old grandson, is the happiest baby, failed his 12mth health check miserably. He cant clap, babble, he isnt trying to crawl, pull himself up or trying to walk. So were pretty sure he has autism. But he wont get a diagnosis til about 2/3 yrs old. But he is a very happy little boy. He is going on a 6wk course to help him out. We noticed differences with both of them when they hit 6mths old. Thank you for doing this video ❤

He was an early talker, he potty trained very early and simply did stuff early. He was a later onset and diagnosed at the age of five. Hello. My childreen have asperger sindrome. In youtube is Andreas Kalker. He explains that in 1940 there was 1 baby with autism in 10.000 babies who were born. Know is 1 in 68 babies. Biology doesnt change in 80 years. The problem is the mercury in the vaccines and the parasitosis that babies have when the were vaccinned. The mercury in the vaccines ataked the neural system. Try to.find his chats in english. The first month of treatment the child is not allowed to eat ;milk or nothing from the milk ( there is a replasement for the milk) and in spanish we say harinas. They are not allowed to eat harinas ( cakes, cookies) the children can eat meat , fruits and vegetables. In.the first part of the treatment you have to keep away the food that parasits eats. In this part of the treatmemt my child improveb a lot. Then you have to use MMS. Please in youtube looks for andreas kalker

Don't be worried. As long as you get the early intervention your child will do well. But understand that every child's improvement is different based on the type of intervention, who is doing the intervention, if parents are on board at home, & your child being high, medium or low functioning.

Hi. My son JEREMIAH is 11 months old and had febrile seizure before 10 days. Untill then he responded very well to his name but now he's not responding to his name unless I call 5 or 10 times. But good eye contact. Can febrile seizure trigger autism? Kindly reply please 🙏🏻.
@freshgreen54
@freshgreen54 10 ай бұрын
Did you determine what caused the fever initially leading to the seizure? A febrile seizure is caused by a high temperature. If the fever was caused by an ear infection the infection could have caused hearing loss which could account for unresponsiveness to his name. I'm not sure if focal seizures can cause the same type of sensory processing issues that focal seizures can but it is possible for a seizure to affect the part of the brain responsible for processing sensory input and cause distortion of hearing, smell etc or even sometimes hallucinations. If the issue is sensory processing and distortion he may not demonstrate actual hearing loss because the issue would not be within the ear but rather the part of the brain which processes sensory input. Hearing is processed in the auditory cortex of the temporal lobe of the brain. Lion's mane mushrooms contain the proteins NGF (nerve growth factor) and BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) which stimulate the growth of new cells within the brain and may help recover from damage in the brain if the issue is sensory processing.

Me too and I had training three years early child development, 🤦‍♀️🙄, my youngest and I missed it. But only because I was using the same technique I used to teach my sister's autistic son and my daughter who said her first word at four months cause I always said hi baby every morning. I started with my son same way just pushed it under the rug by saying (oh it's cause he's the second child and a boy they're developmental delayed naturally, 🤦‍♀️). Look at his second and first birthdays, 😭 how could I miss fifteen years. But I did but in my defense I did tell the doctor something was wrong hence the reason why I switched doctors when he was 18 months old because he kept running himself into the wall every time you would tell him no or correct his behavior he would bang his head on stuff our run his head into stuff. As a mom I knew something wasn't right but my pediatrician who was also a child psychologist kept telling me he was fine he was meeting his milestones well of course I worked with him all the time I made the time and focused on only him did this four times before him nothing different except he crawled on his back scooching. And walked on his tippy toes and had yeast issues which is common with autistic children, but didn't find that out till recently about the bacteria link with the gut, 😩 no wonder why formulas were such a pain, I had to go to canned pet milk and drops.

When your son was playing with the construction toy, his hand movements, were one you see lots of autistic children do. Not every child uses those hand movements. Now on the note of jar food...All parents should try the jars of food. They taste awful!! Except some of the fruit, and desert ones. My Oldest would spit the jar food out at me. So I wondered.. why?? So.. I tasted it. It was awful!! I also spit it out. Then I bought one of those hand held manual blenders, and what ever we were eating, I blended up, and fed to all of my kids. They loved it. First time, i did potatoes, chicken, and gravy. My daughter couldn't get enough. I wondered.. why?? So.. I tried it. It was very Yummy. Lol. Children do have taste buds, and do know what their taste buds like, and don't like. But a lot of those jar foods are gross. Better to make homemade.

@@doyouhearthepeoplesing2 Well if you ask me, I would agree that keeping it as a separate category would be best, but apparently all the doctors have relabeled us as being on "the spectrum" of Autism. I will say that Autism without language delay or cognitive delay is hugely different with regards to how it looks, however the basic underlying social/neurological impairment is the same. Aspergers is no longer used as a diagnostic label anymore, but I will continue to keep using it to label myself as I think it describes me better than simply saying Autistic.

I have 5 kids and they all showed clear signs of understanding a lot of spoken commands/key words long before they could actually speak fluently. If I tell my youngest son who is currently 16 months that his favorite blanket is in the kitchen or in his bedroom, he will go run into the correct room to get it. That is without me pointing or looking in the direction of the room named. Around 18 months they can follow some simple commands as long as its very clear, like "out" for get out of the room, or "trash" for put it in the trash can. As far as teaching this goes, its just repeating the word or phrase you want them to recognize while showing them what to do, even moving them through the motions till they get it. Then praise them when they start doing it.

I always thought babies started crawling around the age of 6 months old. All 3 of mine did. I wouldn't think 7 months was early for crawling. One of mine didn't like crawling, and was walking around the age of 9 months. Now that is early for walking. Most don't walk till 12 months. Just saying. I also thought every child should know how to ride a 2 wheeler, without training wheels by 6 years old. So.. I do not see early crawling, walking, or cycling, as a sign of autism. Just normal child development.

Actually 6 months is early. As crawling can rang from 6-9 months so @6 months would be on the earlier side.

A side note on the crawling: Asymmetrical crawling is not in itself a sign of autism but in studies of diagnosed children with autism it turns out they had a history of asymmetrical crawling. Also, children who skipped the crawling stage have been linked with developmental delays/dysfunction.

I am speaking as a counselor and someone with Aspergers. Its a developmental disorder, so as they develop they can learn to cope with the things they struggle with. They improve gradually over time, particularly in a loving, supportive environment. The degree of that improvement will vary from person to person. However, they are never "cured" in the same way that a person who is dyslexic is never cured of their disability even though they may learn strategies to make reading and writing easier for them. I will always have Aspergers, but as a 36 year old adult most people don't even know I have autism unless they see me in a very stressful situation as I have learned to cope with quite a bit. And yes, there is a lot you can do at home. I credit my mother with helping me a lot. When I was little she taught me to be able to tolerate and even appreciate physical contact with others. I don't know what your child's specific needs are, but you can make a big difference.

I know social media is big now and having a kid in the spectrum it is great to have the help of what other parents went through but I just think a lot of parents in KZfaq don't realize their kids didn't have any saying on their lives being share with strangers...

I’m convinced, at least in my case that it’s genetic. “Asperger’s “ runs in my family. Yes I know it’s not labeled as such anymore but the former label very accurately describes a handful of my family members. There are a number of genes associated with autism. Just like many other disorders, environment could play a part in it. I have one child with autism and one who is neurotypical. I ate a lot of macaroni and cheese because that’s about all my body would allow me to retain for the pregnancy that resulted in a child with autism and for the other pregnancy I craved beef like crazy. I had the flu with her too. I did force myself during both pregnancies to juice a combination of fruits and vegetables (same for both). I’m an anxious person and had the same level of mild to medium anxiety during both pregnancies. The thing is if it were environment, it may not be direct environment, it could be what your grandmother ate or was exposed to. There are certain studies on genetics that demonstrate changes in epigenetics that are a result of a grandparent or a great grandparents’ food intake.

What's different now than say 20 years ago? Dating sites exposure access infedility......and 1 in 50 kids with autism. Bacterial infections such as tetanus, sepsis, strep and syphilis have alot of the same behavioral symptoms as Autism. Why do they have an unhealthy gut to begin with? Maybe a bacterial infection was there since birth.... Syphilis causes brain eye ear teeth skin(excema) bone defects. Unfortunately being pregnant it creates false negatives called the hook effect. Too many antibodies from mom and baby can't be detected with standard testing methods. It can be acquired by eating or drinking after someone, kissing, sneezing and hereditarily. It has the ability to mutate our genes so it basically goes unnoticed and disseminates quickly in children to the organs instead of lingering in the blood. So no a simple blood test won't work, if you can even get a doc to agree to one. This is probably why now we are seeing multiple children in families with autism, it never got treated while pregnant. Unfortunately if the symptoms are subtle, doctors would rather call it Autism than a possible STD while pregnant. $$$$ true testing is with a PCR, not blood. If its spread by mucous, it makes sense to test it that way. I'd like to see a study with autistic children being treated with penicillin to see if it has any effect. Good luck. If you don't believe me, here's a pediatric infectious disease doctor claiming the facts www.nature.com/articles/nrmicro.2016.141?foxtrotcallback=true journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/CMR.00070-13
