We've made a few changes to our rabbitry lately. Since it's been awhile since we've talked about our rabbits, we thought we'd bring you along on an update video, and also explain some future plans we have for our rabbit setup. We've also had a lot of people ask about an update on how the fertilizer sled has been doing. In this video, we will tell you our thoughts of it after about 7 months of use. Hope you enjoy the video!

I dated a gal from Kentucky and she always made me go hunting before the 1st. of January. She said her family had a wives tale that said if you have rabbit on your dinner plate on New Years day that it would be a prosperous year for the family!. Seeing the rabbits being fed made me think of that old wives tale. Glad to see you all making videos again! May the lord bless you all every day of your life on this rock.

Thanks for the update. Nice to see you a little more often. Kind of feels like you've got a shadow over you. You're both so subdued in the vid. I'll say a little prayer for that shadow and whatever took you away from us for so long to loosen it's hold. You both seem like great people. Want you to be happy.

Jacob I laughed at the comment about building heavy. When my Bob builds me something I always say please don’t make it too “early garage”. He knows I mean please honey not so heavy I can’t move it. 🤣🤣. All sounds great. Thank you for the video. Alex please keep me in mind if you ever start selling fertilizer again. Hope you are doing well. Oh, and I am working hard to finally set up a KZfaq. Editing is hard for this old girl but when I get comfortable I will see how my upload goes. I am going to call it Finish Well Farm. I am only 2 yrs behind you since that meetup in S Oklahoma. 🤣🤣. I am very proud of you two for staying at this. I am just starting with rabbits and plan to sell manure. What is a fair price to charge?
@cynthiabarrow509

@George Duncan. I have paid a large swing. I just signed up for some from a town south of me. $5/30-40# bag. That is very cheap. Last year I paid $10 and they delivered. It had lots of rocks that I could not really tell when I Put it down. I noticed it was clumpy but did not even think rocks at the time. It was not until I worked on my fall beds that I learned my beds were not usable for carrots due to all the rocks. I got one cleaned out in time to plant some carrots. Needless to say I will not buy those again. I have paid as high as $12-15 for a bag. If it is good quality folks don’t mind paying. I am allergic to rabbits so I can’t really do the breeding thing because of the hair issues. Jacob and Alex sold me excellent manure compost. So short answer. How many gardeners near you, how many rabbit farms, what kind of quality are you providing? I don’t mind paying a fair price. “A worker is always worth his wage”. But I would rather buy expensive blood meal than damage my beds with a lot of rocks. I hope this is helpful. Good luck with your rabbit venture. I think more and more people will be gardening and looking for sources of quality protein and manure.

Yes Cynthia, Jacob definitely tends to build things on the heavy side. But I will say, they usually will withstand the storms. Lol And I can't wait to watch your videos! I'd love to learn about the berries you grow! Also, we should have lots of fertilizer available come early spring. Holler at me when you need me to start saving some up.

I've done construction for 25 plus years and I would use a 2x10 for your header and then yes using lag bolts is fine and you should be able to secure the lag bolts to the inside pole barn header. I hope that helps

Aye, i was going to say tie into existing header using lags and or bolts/nuts. Joist hangers as well. Same as dave said. If it was me i would possibly even remove siding and do the above, then cut and replace, (could open up possibilities of reordering shopspace in future or restricting access to shed side) but not exactly needed and IS a lot more work.

Love how you two are always looking to update or improve on your homestead. Very innovative. Great idea with the weed barrier cloth. And the movable ones definitely look sturdy. I agree, probably just 3 to 4 rabbits per bunny tractor, just have 2 instead of the one bigger one. I think Jason from Sow the Land had a decent setup for his chicken tractor or chic-shaw. Loved seeing the dogs and the rest of the animals. Great video guys 🙂

The best way is going to be to dig some post holes and put posts along the backside of your building. It’s really not made to carry a heavy load but you guys don’t have too much snow so you could probably get away with a header but make sure there are lag bolts going through that header to the inside that are connecting to the framework that holding the roofing up at the top of that wall, you could also add some supports inside, if you’ve got a concrete floor in there you could just make some 2 x 4 framed areas to the top to support some headers so you don’t have to have Post outside, that would basically be building Post inside and using your concrete floor but would take up a little bit of room. Another thing I see as I’m looking at the ground is you have erosion from water, you may want to dig out and put some French drain or field tile under there to move water on that ground away from the base of the building. A third thing I’ve noticed from having rabbits myself once. Worms love rabbit poop areas and if the rabbits are pooping on the ground there you probably have a lot of worms which means that’s going to be pretty soft ground because they keep it moving and I but being that it’s the foundation of that building right there you probably don’t want that ground to be softened that way so instead of using weed cloth you might want to use some plastic or even just pour some cement there even a thin layer just to make it so that all runs off to the side and can be hosed out to go to the back of the building under that gate, maybe even pour some concrete under that gate to run it away from the building a few feet. That will get rid of the urine buildup and act as a watershed because I’m sure you get water moving down there from the hill behind you, I can see the erosion marks coming down, having some concrete there by the base, even if it’s ugly or cracked concrete will move a ton of that water away so when you get heavy rains it will kind of act as a gutter and push it all out away from the building foundation. If you don’t want to modify the inside of the building or a worried about it supporting the lean to roof, you can just build the lien two as an independent structure and overlap the metal roofing, instead of just having posts on one side have posts on the back as well and then you can screw it to the building just to give it some stability but those post next to the building will actually be what’s holding it up and you could probably put those on some blocks or pavers if you’re not worried about it settling and you don’t want to bother with the concrete work. I remember you had the skid steer so if you rented an auger you could pretty easily drill holes to do some concrete bases. You can go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and buy the metal post base that you stick in the concrete before it dries. You’re more than capable of doing it, it’s just some Labor and the concrete job doesn’t have to be amazing you can just use quick Crete bags but that’s probably what I would do, then it’s going to be a good solid anchor because you guys get a lot of wind and if it settles a little here and there it’s not gonna be putting all that stress and strain on your building. Just some things to think about. If you really want to just do it on the cheap there are concrete bases that you can buy or just get some concrete blocks and just build the framework so the whole thing stands off of that, that way it will stand independently on its own and the only reason you bought it to the building is just to make sure it’s close enough that the rain doesn’t have a big gap to go through.

Jacob & HI ALEX !!! You got the right idea for putting the header on up there don't worry none you got a good Head on your shoulders go for that and when putting the cedar posts into the ground burn them up to the level of the earth or just a little bit more it may sound dumb but it ain't Japan does it & it lasts a longer bit more bugs and stuff won't go into it !!!

That would be great with some old lawn mower wheels to roll around if possible. On most pole barns there are 2x6 or bigger at the top of the side walls screw your header into those if your barn has them, shim in between the ridges on the tin on the outside of the building so it doesn’t crush it.

Hi Jacob and Alex, Just a thought on moving your slider Rabbit system, you could get the heavier chains and attach one to each of the three supports and attach the other end to a cedar log or 2x4 (which ever works best) and drag the setup with the 4 wheeler that way. It would allow for an even pull I think. Again, just a thought! Lots of luck with that and I too am glad to see your posts again. :-)
