The first digital clock that used the famous Mostek clock chip.
Very rare these days and highly collectible.
Runs the old Panaplex gas discharge 7 segment display.

The first kit I ever built was a Heathkit clock. It had individual display tubes. My father had bought it to build himself, and I (at age ten) talked him into teaching me to solder and then he let me build it, under his supervision. He was so blown away that it worked on the first try (except that we had to adjust the tubes a bit so they all lined up) that he allowed me to pick out a kit for my birthday present. That one was an HW-717 shortwave radio. That one needed a bit of troubleshooting after I built it, but we had it running in a half hour or so. That was 50 years ago, and I still solder for a living today, servicing vintage audio gear. I miss you, Dad.

@@12voltvids I've been trying to figure that out. The clock went the way of all good things many years ago. I looked at a Heathkit Catalogs site, and did not see it, although the GC-1107 looks very much like it on the outside. That clock uses a VFD, if I recall. But I specifically remember having to unsolder the display tubes and move them around until they were all even, and then resolder them carefully.

@@12voltvids OK, I figured it out. It was NOT a Heathkit. It was an ArcherKit (Radio Shack) Model 28-404. Found it online a few minutes ago, with pictures of the internals. I won't try to post a link here, but look for Vintage Digital Clock Museum.

@ScottGrammer i know the one. 6 vacuum fluorescent tubes. I also built one but a different kit. I have built numitron, several vfd and 2 nixie tube clocks as well as an x-y vector that displays a analog clock on a crt oscilloscope.

@@12voltvids I have an old Heathkit 'scope I was given a few months ago. It's in bad shape, but the case and CRT are still OK. Maybe I'll build a clock into it someday, make it a single-purpose device. Or take the CRT out, put it in another, smaller chassis, and turn that into a clock. It would be cool to have a very slow horizontal and vertical sweep that would prevent burn-in of the digits.

I used to love looking at my dads heathkit catalogs. We had a heathkit color tv my dad built for the longest time. I have been by the plant in St Joe Michigan. Shame they couldn't survive.

Mine works like new. I don't run it that much though as I don't want to burn out the display tubes.

Really cool to see these old DIY kits that you could also buy prebuilt if you wanted. Times were different back then. Love to see how it was in the 70s as someone born in the late 80s.

I built a GC 1005 clock when I was 12 in 1975. Was a birthday present, bought from the Heathkit factory showroom in Gloucester. Had it until sometime in 1980s, but it got lost in a move.

I recently acquired one of these babies, in good shape. It has a bit of flickering (especially in darkness and just a few segments are lit) on one of the panaplexes which apparently is a common issue. There are some standard patches for that by adjusting the capacitor/resistor that handles the display refresh, unfortunately those patches are already in place. Some day I'll try to add a UV LED that shines on the display and see if that will fix the issue.

Sorry to bother you and about bad english but my SAMSUNG SV-A70 (Looks very similar to your old vcr that fixed "SAFE on display" problem) turns it's cam gear to unload direction when I turn it on. I tried cleaning the mode select switches and sensors but nothing changed, I replaced IR led and start pos IR receiver, not that special. I also found that motor poly has cracked so I glued it. Can you help me?

Hey man i know it’s not relevant to this video, but I have a Sony ZR70 camcorder that does not get a picture (as if the lens cap were on) It shows the date time and battery but with a black screen. Wouldn’t be opposed to sending it in or taking any advice you have

Bad chip? I'm guessing before I watch the rest. I just noticed it has a speaker. Alarm? I really like that clock. It beats the rubbish we have today.
