In the summer of 2023, I went sailing around the Mediterranean on the gigantic and extremely colourful Costa Smeralda cruise ship. This ship has 20 decks, 5 waterslides, 4 pools, and so many bars and restaurants. The design style is definitely not for everyone, with most of the public spaces including several different colors and textures. You've made me rethink the idea of cruising on a Costa ship, although those colors still might be too much for me! Major sensory overload, which makes it difficult for me to make sense of my surroundings. But I just might do it. I want to hit the Med when I'm able to travel again and those water slides look very tempting. Thank you for filming your ride on it-I love those!

My last cruise was on a Royal Caribbean ship. Because the entire shop was designed to point in towards the central promenade, it felt like we booked a week at a local mall that just happened to move. While it does make it easier to find everything, I still would rather have a ship that focuses out towards the sea rather than one that feels like a shopping mall where I cannot see the sea. I couldn’t tell if this ship was “sea focused” or not.

I would definitely consider a cruise on this ship after seeing your tour. It seems to have a lot of great outdoor spaces - I am not a fan of the ships which focus on the interior spaces and seem to ignore the beautiful aspects of sailing. I am not a fan of the decor and design though, it seems like they used a lot of different leftovers from other ships!

MSC ships make me think they hired the designers that used to work for Carnival in the 80s & 90s (where they had so many colors and styles going on all at once).

has a great time watching your video Morgan! I'm actually going to be taking the Costa Smeralda cruise through the Mediterranean in just a few days and I wanted your advise on, first your preference on which main dining room to go to. I saw the cruise ship has 4 different ones. They automatically assigned us to one already but we do have the option to change it. Also, we're going to be stopping at a few ports not in order but they are, Palma de Mallorca, Savona, Barcelona, Marseilles, and Palermo. We booked an excursion for Barcelona but do you recommend adventuring on foot on our own on any of these other stops?

Sorry, I don’t know the answer to that question exactly, however I am assuming that it’s table service from a small menu of items that are available on the buffet as well.

The staff all speak several languages and the announcements are made in Italian first, then several languages. It was totally fine as an English speaker.

Talking of cruise ship designs and designers. Here comes some knowledge that nobody needs. The Costa Smeralda was the first Costa ship in years that was not built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. Along with changing to Meyer Turku shipyard, Costa fired their long-term ship designer. He (being an Italian) was “too colorful”, said Costa. The new one (the Costa Smeralda being his first time working for Costa) is an American star designer. No comment from my side.

I’m sailing sister ship Toscana out of Dubai in February. Can’t wait. I’m curious if you consider yourself more German or American these days. I’m sure traditional German designers - Bauhausers - would hate this design as much as you did.

The decor on this ship looks like it came from a "clearance" section and there just wasn't enough of it to go very far so there are hundreds of bits and pieces. My eyes are bleeding!

Hi Morgan. Totally off the topic, but I booked a Nicko German language only cruise. Eek! What was I thinking? I'll be using Google Translate, I am sure, and I am trying to learn a little German via Duolingo but I am still nervous. Any hints? It's a Christmas cruise leaving from Cologne and then back again.

Don't worry, english is widely spoken. We have done a Nicko River Cruise through Germany. My husband is Canadian, I am German. Okay, he speaks German and can understand everything but nevertheless every so often we talk English. The Crew noticed it right away and from that moment on adressed him in his mother language - he definitely enjoyed it! So I can only say there is no need for you to worry 👍

I got a cool Dyson Headphones commercial. Was there any complementary gender segregated sauna or steam in the gym/locker room? Ship tours always seem to skip this feature. It is important to me since I hate paying for a CoEd Thermal Suite Spa packages where you have to wear bathing suits all the time.
