Ride along on my Vespa GTS 300 HPE as we explore some twisty Rocky Mountain roads - Colorado 14, Stove Prairie Road, and Rist Canyon Road.
I was testing my GoPro setup. In this video I installed the Max Lens Mod to compare the image quality and field of view to the regular lens, shot at 4k. I think I prefer the regular lens for this helmet cam view. Using the Max Lens Mod drops the resolution and image quality, and the field of view seems a bit more narrow top to bottom than I expected. Not sure if the generally wider view makes up for what I think is a bit lower image quality. I also didn't have the camera positioned quite right on my helmet in terms of capturing the "cockpit".
What do you think?
- Is this wider field of view better?
- Does the horizon lock make the cornering look better?
You can compare this video with the previous one shot without the Max Lens Mod:

Yes sir, this video looks so polished and refined, kinda like watching a documentary. Looks better than the previous. Ok, rewinds parts and find that the sweeps were as I said, but the twisties seem to be really good on that downgrade. All in all, I still prefer the previous. I played the last and this video at 480 and 720 and this one seems more grainy. You have a good 'Radio Voice' for narrating. Having said all that, I'll watch you scootin' videos regardless of which way you shoot it.

New sub. Just wanted to say really enjoyed the Vespa videos. I have a Suzuki Address 110 and an Xmax 300 on order here in South Australia. What a wonderful part of the world you must live in. Amazing scenery. Where you have deer on the roads we have kangaroos and one deer that ran across the road one whilst i was driving. Frightened the life out of me. Fantastic work kind regards.🇦🇺

Hmm I actually went back and watched some of last weeks video again, then switched and rewatched some of this one. Honestly I like both, last week it was more POV and it was like being on the ride, you could see the display on the Vespa, and when you'd turn your head it was more "real"? IDK This week was very smooth, which seems like it made the landscape more crisp, but that could be a difference in the route as well? Long story short, both are good for different reasons lol Enjoyed the ride along!!
@flatgrindrides
@flatgrindrides 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback. Last week I did not have the horizon lock on and that’s what makes it feel more “real“I think. The Horizon lock really smooth everything out almost like a drone moving. As for this weeks video, I think I could’ve done better with angling the camera so that I get less sky and more handlebars. I’ll keep tweaking it!

Great looking video. I live in the a coastal town in the South West of the UK but I watch videos in the US with a little envy. The scenery, the long straight roads and so little traffic. So few cars, It's like the motor car has quite caught on yet in America😉

Thanks Paul! One thing we do have here is variety. Plenty of traffic congestion and horrible driving in places like LA and Houston. Sadly so many of our small towns have dried up and are dying, but there is lots of beautiful landscape and pockets of remote beauty to be found all across the country, from the desert southwest and the mountain west to the forested north east. I hope one day you can hop across the pond and go for a ride!

I prefer the picture in the first Twisty video, this one look blury and I like the tilts of horizen when the bike is leaning. I have a question too - have you been on long mountain road decent where you had to be on a brake a lot? If so have you notice any lack of stopping power and if the brakes were overheating? I wonder because I'm going to ride in the mountains on Mallorka with my wife on the back seat. Booked the Vespa 300 there.
@flatgrindrides
@flatgrindrides 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it. As for the brakes, even though I’ve ridden some mountain roads, I haven’t been on the brakes very long. On the longest and steepest descents around here if I let it coast downhill I only get up to about 60 mph. If there’s a tight turn I will brake before entry, but I’m rarely on the brakes very long so I have not had any issues with brakes overheating. I have not ridden with a passenger yet. I weigh about 225 pounds with my gear on. It is obviously a light bike, but the braking power is much lower than my other (big) motorcycles, but seems ok for general use. Loaded to full capacity and a steep mountain descent is obviously a difficult “test case”. I can’t say if you have anything to be worried about or not, but it is something that you should be mindful of on your ride. I’d be curious to hear about your experience. Good luck and have fun on your trip/rides!

What’s the farthest you’ve driven this awesome scooter? I’m looking at the orange Vespa gts 300, but the nearest dealership is in another city. About 137 miles away. Do you think a stock gts would handle such a road trip (it’d be on the highway most of the time). I plan on making occasional road-trips that size anyways, but was wanted to ask someone who’s had first hand experience.
@flatgrindrides
@flatgrindrides 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what my longest ride has been so far. Probably about 100 miles. There are guys riding them across the US in the scooter cannonball run, so it can certainly be done. The question is your comfort. Personally, I wouldn’t want to ride interstate highways where speeds are high, there are lots of trucks, crosswinds, etc. As for cruising back roads, I imagine you could go as far and as long as you want.

I don't like the extreme wide angle lens. Like to see your hands, the instruments and mirrors. Because then it looks like in a video game. Also the horizon stabilisation i find unnecessary. The old setup was perfect!

@@bertandjo comfortable cruising and zipping around up to about 60. I’ve had mine up to about 75 on flat ground. Haven’t really tried for a top speed yet, but assume it is around the 75 mark. 👍🏽🎥 Perfect amount of wind and road noise, makes me feel like I’m almost there. For 9k I could get another 1000cc, newer modern street bike Help please, my next ride (soon) is going to be a Primavera 150 or GTS 300, the 300 seems a better deal on a safer more capable motorbike but do you think my small but mighty teenage daughter (5’ 4” 110lbs) could handle the 300 GTS with proper training and gear?
@flatgrindrides
@flatgrindrides 2 жыл бұрын
For the price the options are almost endless. You can buy a lot of used bike for that. In the end it comes down to what you really want, I think. As for the daughter being able to ride it, I would say absolutely no problem.

The speed varied quite a bit based on the circumstances, but I would guess between 35 and 55 for most of it. About the same as the Vespa in the twisties one video. I think you can see the speedometer in that one. It may give you a better sense of the speed and what it looks like to the camera.

When the video was first uploaded this morning it took quite a while for KZfaq to process the high resolution version. So depending on when you watched it you may have seen the low resolution version. This one was also filmed at lower resolution than the previous video, although it should still look reasonably sharp. You might check your KZfaq quality settings for the video sometimes if your bandwidth is low it will stream a lo-res version to you. Dunno. I think there are much better people to comment on the riding dynamics of different bikes. I’m a pretty simple guy, but I’ll give it some thought and try to make some comments in an upcoming video. 👍😉
