This is one of the most beatuful version of Orphee from female version. I know she has accent in French. But I still find she sings incredibly beautiful...

I can't say anything about her French, since Iäm Swedish myself, but Kasarova sure can act! I saw her for the first time in "Der Rosenkavalier" as Octavian, and I've loved her voice ever since. A very good mezzo, using a "darker" shade to her voice when needed but still being able to sing the high notes without any strain. Would love to see her live. One of the things I really like about her is that you don't even have to look at her, you understand the pain/joys in her voice anyway!

I do love the Callas version. Quite different from Kasarova's (I think I like her studio recording of the Italian version better, but then one can't compare studio recorded stuff with live staged performance), but equally drives Orphee's heartache home. The weirdness in their voice seem to serve these kind of expressive music well!

Yeah. This singing will melt you, thaw you, turn you into a poodle of pure rapture, envelop your brain in almost narcotic mist, thick and sweet like honey. I feel as if I am some strawberry ice-cream melting in the sun.

It's a great rendition indeed, but I wouldn't compare Vassalina to Ferrier. Ferrier, one of the greatest singers of all time, had an incredibly dark contralto tone which suggested masculinity, while Queen Kasarova has a lovely, lighter mezzo timbre nonetheless endowed with a rich chest register. Although Kasarova's Orfeo couldn't be more moving with her incredible acting, Ferrier's dark version makes your blood freeze in your veine when expressing the desair of the beloved one : "unequalled".

I am having some problems with pronounciation here but this is a beautiful interpration, moving, very sensitive... Fortunately French are not limited to "giloubreizh", rude and vulgar indeed.

It is true it lies well for Kasarova's voice! But couldn't we escape these inate comments about "Orpheus" incarnate. First of all we are talking mythological characters composed by dead men. AND we are talking about somebody who has been mucking around in the underworld on vacation.

No. I think that Orpheus, especially in the Berlioz version, sounds better when sung by a mezzo. Especially such a brilliant one like Vesselina Kasarova.
