The Six Day War is like the three neighborhood bullies teaming up to attack the new kid, but the new kid ends up punching their teeth out.

There's a quote I keep seeing around, not sure who said it, but it goes: "History is not there for you to like or dislike, it's there for you to learn from. If it upsets you - then good, you're less likely to repeat it."

So Israel had previously used Egypt's closing of the Straits of Tiran as a Casus belli in the 1956 Suez Crisis. Indy Neidell did an amazing documentary series about that on his own channel, and the 7 part series contains 2 prelude parts covering the history of Israel and the Arabs of Palestine...it is about the best and most evenhanded history of that topic I have seen on YT.

One important note here is that this war was actually based on a lie. The USSR lied to Egypt, saying that Israel was preparing for an invasion. This caused Egypt to plan a first strike, thus their choice to mass tanks on the border, send the UN observers away, and blockade Israeli ships. Israel saw that Egypt was preparing an invasion, and reached the exact same conclusion that Egypt did a week earlier--they started planning a first strike. Basically, the USSR created a situation where both the Israelis and the Egyptians thought that they were doing a first strike against an imminent invasion. Israel just launched the perfect first strike. This war wasn't even a one-off. In 1948, less than a day after Israel was re-founded, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia invaded and were beaten back. Then, 6 years after the Six Day War, an Arab coalition of 10 nations, led by Egypt and Syria, invaded Israel on the high holiday of Yom Kippur--despite the ridiculous disadvantages, Israel won again, and could have rolled through Cairo and Damascus if the US, UN, and USSR didn't intervene. Ironically, the result of this was lasting peace deals with Jordan and Egypt, as they realized that another invasion would be impossible. These wars are why even those who hate Israel respect it's military. You do not want to be on the wrong side of them in a war, as they have crushed forces triple their size, while surrounded and with lower quality weapons. For perspective, during the Six Day War, the casualty ratio was more than 15:1 against the Arab Coalition. Also, a couple corrections: The Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem wasn't abandoned. It was ethnically cleansed of all Jews in 1948 by Jordan, who gave the properties to Palestinian loyalists. This created a lot of issues, as the Palestinians who were given these homes were put in a bind when Israel captured that land and they were effectively squatting in those homes. Also, Israel didn't capture all of "Historic Palestine" in this fight. Jordan was 67% of Historic Palestine, which is why they were so nervous here, because their leaders are Saudi Hashemites, while 90% of their population are Palestinians. They have persistent concerns of another coup attempt (like attempted by Black September) to depose the Hashemite royalty. Finally, the USS Liberty situation is more complicated on both sides. The ship was running dark, didn't respond to hails, and had Latin writing on the side. The IAF assumed that it was an Egyptian ship. It was operating within their territorial waters too. After the war, both sides investigated and decided to just bury it because it was embarrassing on both sides.

There’s a good 2 part series by Epic History TV about the Suez Canal Crisis that happened in 1956 that gives more history about the region, another good series to watch is Indy Neidell’s series on the Cuban Missile Crisis it’s a bit long since it covers everyday of the crisis and has a prelude

Indy's series on the Suez Crisis is hugely better than Epic History's, though it is 7 parts.😁

No matter what you think of the righteousness in any side of this war you can’t deny Israel showed some of the most brilliant moves and executions of its strategy ever in this war. Very few nations have executed and showed as brilliant of a performance in a war as Israel did in this one.

I would highly recommended a video on Nasser or the Suez crisis. Despite his unfortunate decisions in the 6 Day War, Nasser was one of the most influential leaders in the Arab World. A very interesting personality

The controversy lies very much in how you report it, I think. Reporting/talking about historical events can't be controversial, they happened. The controversy is in how you interpret what started it and how it went; the actual events just are.

The egyptians and jordanians had the exceptional propaganda precursor of Baghdad Bob. "The Israelis are now surrounded we fool them by making sure our airforce is gone so that israelis will throw themelves at us and be cornered" HAHA :D. Btw The Trump would have had that war settled in a day or 2.
