DISCLAIMER: We are a home euthanasia service; and focus on end-of-life care in pets diagnosed with terminal diseases. In this video our primary focus is on end-of-life questions we are commonly asked for dogs and cats with this specific disease. In our videos we only briefly discuss the diseases themselves, diagnosis and more common treatment options. Because Veterinarian medicine is always changing and improving with specific treatments for diseases, please be sure to continue to research your pet's diagnosis. There may be new and better treatments available through your Vet, and Veterinary Universities through clinical trials and research. As time goes on, and this video is unchanging, I also encourage you to check out disease specific forums for your pet's diagnosis for many times there will be continued recommendations on new treatments you can discuss with your Vet.
Because we run a full-time business, we are only able to check our comments section about once a month, we apologize for any delayed response. If you have any urgent questions or concerns for your pet, please reach out directly to your Veterinarian.
In this video, I talk about kidney failure, especially chronic kidney failure in cats and dogs. We discussed treatment options and what this disease looks like as it progresses with your pet.

we had to put pur baby of only 10 years to sleep on february 18. he started showing symptoms late january going into feb vomiting and eating less and only drinking water. we also noticed his backside and felt his spine more. so we did bloodwork at the vet and he was at stage 4 . creantine level 8.9. he never showed any symptoms in the last year.. such a sad thing a horrible disease. i hope the drs and scientists can come up with a treatment to prolong cats lives with kidney disease

One our cats passed last year from CKD, she was barely 2 years old. We live in an area where the Vets are not very helpful with it either, my local vet immediately suggested euthanizing her. I did my homework and did what I could for her, tried to change her diet but she wasn't eating much. I was giving her supplments along with fluids every other day at home for a few months, which did seem to help her, but the CKD was too advanced and we lost her. It's a horrible disease.

Definitely a good video on this subject -- I didn't see the decline in my cat until right at the end although in hindsight I should have known. We didn't fully understand until he had breathing issues and was lethargic and we took him to the emergency vet and found he was severely anemic. We decided the best decision was to euthanize but I know I have some guilt that we should have known and done more for him earlier. I knew he was slowing down at age 17 but didn't expect things to end how they did. May he rest in peace -- I miss him alot!

I always tell my clients, it is so easy to look back and see everything so clearly in hindsight. Please do not beat yourself up over this. Our cats are SO stoic and will hide everything until it is usually quite severe. Very few people catch this disease in its early stages. I also like to remind people that even if you found it earlier, anything you do as far as treatment will be a temporary band aid- you can slow kidney disease but not cure it. Many people also find that treatment is sometimes too traumatizing for their cat, and will decide to stop treatment if their pet is starting to hide from them/or withdrawing because they think they are getting medications or getting poked for subcutaneous fluids.

Thank you for the kind comment. There were other things going on and who knows if the cat lived another 1 year or so if there wouldn't have been other problems. He had previous urinary tract issues/bladder stones which I tended to focus on and he was peeing a little bit more but his appetite didn't decline until the last month. I asked my vet some questions and we did some tests at the end of May 2023 but I didn't put everything together. All my vet mentioned was that he was pretty healthy and his kidney values were slightly off and that maybe I should put him on kidney food. I didn't do it and it annoys me since I don't have a problem with spending the money I just didn't realize -- and no one told me -- that kidney values being "a little bit off" meant that he had lost 75% of his kidney function and that it was a pretty big deal. Of course some of it is that in our neck of the woods it is rural and most people don't want to spend a lot of money on their animals so I think sometimes they keep treatment options pretty basic. I'm not mad at them and I know even if I had put him on kidney food he would have declined slower but who knows if or how much time it would have bought. I am making peace with the fact that I did the best I could at the time and that I am learning more about chronic kidney disease since I will have other cats and want to have a better handle on their health since kidney disease is so common in older cats. Good to see they have a test like SDMA and I'll have to look into that for future animals. @@Dr.Tracy-vet

Thanks -- it has been 8 weeks now and I grieve although life is starting to feel more normal. With that I can spend some time going through old photos and any videos to write a bit about my kitty as my memorial to him and print out a few good pictures. I still shed some tears but some have said the pain never goes away -- you just get used to it and use some of the love to channel to a new pet -- I've starting thinking about a new kitty or kitties. It would be nice that the place is not so quiet. @@Dr.Tracy-vet

This is so helpful! Thank you for the description of symptoms in the end stages and what this means for quality of life. My dog’s blood lab showed creatinine 2,2 this week and your video really helps me put his symptoms into perspective. It also kind of makes my vet practice look a bit clueless as they didn’t ask much about exactly these symptoms in order to try to assess the stage of disease and quality of life - which they should have. So without your video I wouldn’t have known what these symptoms that they didn’t ask about mean for my dog’s quality of life. Thank you so much!! On behalf of myself and even more my dog!

Excellent and thorough and compassionate treatment of the subject. I've been watching and reading alot since my cat was diagnosed with ckd a couple of months ago, and this is the best I've seen, especially about end of life symptoms and timing of euthanasia decisions. Thank you.
