To focus on the positives, this is a good video to show a student to name three or four things the vet techs did incorrectly.

She got the catheter in, so kudos to her for that. But for teaching/demonstration purposes this whole process could have been better executed and explained. People already don’t take vet techs as seriously as human nurses, even though we perform many of the same skills. So I feel that a video of someone placing an IV with little regard for aseptic technique would only reinforce that stereotype about us techs. Also, as an ER/intensive care tech, I’m begging you all (especially GP techs) to PLEASE place your catheters as low on the leg as possible. That catheter was placed so high up on the leg. Scar tissue will develop high up on the vein, making it even more difficult for the next person to place an IV in a potential emergency.

To add on to what this comment is saying, GP’s need to not take blood from the cephalic unless you absolutely need to. Use the jugular vein if possible, when you get good at it it is easier than any other vein and saves those cephalics for catheters in emergencies, surgeries or euthanasia

Thank you for saying that. I was thinking that the whole video. Plus the assistant should have occluded the vein post catheter insertion so that it did not bleed all over. Regardless if there are less transmission concerns from canines, best practice is ALWAYS using proper PPE. She should have had gloves to reduce bacteria being added to the catheter site. CVTs are compared to 7 times specialty RNs. We are certified in radiology, surgery, dental cleaning, pharmacology and more. So I wished she would have more pride in her work to do things with a little more professionalism, especially when trying to help train future technicians.

The way she shaved the area was a bit rough, the blades can cause razor burn if directly put on the skin like that. It irritates the area and can cause infection after bandaging for long periods.

There are so many things wrong with this video!! First off, it is extremely important to wear gloves. An exception is in an emergency situation when you have to place a catheter ASAP or the pet will die. Her not wearing gloves can spread bacteria and ruins the catheter's sterility. Second, she let the catheter bleed all over the dog's arm! In catheterization as a technician, I have found that holding down the cephalic vein slightly cranial, a little below where the other nurse is holding off, can help "hold off" the blood flow so that when you place the cap onto the catheter, it has a nicer finish. It's also important to not have blood all over the catheter site so that there's no risk of infection. The entire taping process made me cringe so bad 😭 My emergency hospital does all this very differently than this. I understand each clinic/hospital is different but we should still be taking into consideration that we want the 110% best for our patients and our furry friends don't deserve poorly performed catheters.
@camdog8905
@camdog8905 7 жыл бұрын
Well, sometimes the blood does run out onto the arm, but I think the other technician restraining the dog held the dogs vein for too long causing the blood flow to come out quicker.. which is why right before the video was cut you here her say "you can let off". But yeah gloves should've been used.
@daway212

I have yet seen gloves to be used while LVTs or even DVMs placing IVC and continuing on that note, haven't seen any infections stemming from that either, maybe differences in education/policies. My only complaint was with the taping of the catheter EDIT: We also wipe down the placement site like we would for a surgery (minus the betadine scrub)

Everyone is so upset of her not wearing gloves? Let’s face it, the reality of you putting gloves on to place a Catheter is kinda of ridiculous. If you were to put regular non sterile gloves on, you are not truly limiting the amount of bacteria being exposed to the patient. Those regular gloves you got from that opened box probably have been exposed to plenty of bacteria and all the bacteria on your hands from you trying to put them on. Once you scrub the patient, don’t touch your fingers/hands and anything else to the “sterile” field that can contaminate it! I’ve never seen someone put gloves on to place a catheter. And the risk of a zoonotic blood borne pathogen is slim since there isn’t a whole lot animals can transmit to us. Also, if you place the catheter right and have no issues, it shouldn’t be a bloody mess. It’s always nice to have the PPE but the reality and practicality of it, sometimes (and most times) you have to play dirty.

Why was the bevel not facing up?????? As someone at the beginning stages of my career, I was taught from the get-go to always have the bevel up. Once you get a flash of blood in the hub, you are supposed to advance your catheter…not the needle. I don’t like picking on peole and this not meant to be an insult to the technician. We learn to do things the way we are taught. Is she a bad tech?…No, we don’t know that. I am lucky to have senior techs who are mentoring me and helping me learn to do things the proper way. Is there more than one way to do things?…Yes. Is this one of them?…not in my opinion. I work in an ER and we don’t always have time to put on gloves, so I believe with solid technique it is possible to do without gloves, but blood and bacteria really like each other so keeping things sterile is so so so very important. Thank you to all of the incredible vet nurses out there.

The reason we hold up the head is because it is a key factor in determining the amount of sedation they push through the catheter. We sedate mostly to response of medication, not necessarily the measurement. Some dogs require much less sedation than calculated, some dogs require much more. The dog is pre-sedated, there is the lowest chance he would be physically able to bite either of them.

Please wear gloves, and remove the nail polish. This is the most unprofessional and unsanitary IV placement I have ever seen. Pet's right to quality care should be no less than the care we receive as humans. Wearing gloves and natural nails, helps in protecting the patient from infections. Also, the IV needle needs not to be inserted almost all the way in as you did, as you run the risk of going in and through the vessel, or even causing nerve damage. As an RN working with human patients, I can tell you that the sanitary rules and professionalism standards are no different between humans and pets. Animals are unable to advocate for themselves (in this case ask you to wear gloves and keep neutral nails), for this reason it is of the essence that we maintain the highest standards, we owe it to them.

Gloves are to protect US, not the patient, see the above comment by @VetTech Girl as well as the one following her comment from Dr. Ali Zaib Kazmi. There is NOT THAT much wrong with this video. I have been in this field well over 20 years and have NEVER seen ANYONE DVM or LVT wear gloves for it, it is simply not practical.
