What I imagine in a bossfight with this theme is one against a god. Not an evil one, but simply one who wishes to die. But his death would bring about the end of the world. He actively is attempting to end his own life, through cataclysmic means, and only you can prevent this. But not through power. Not through will. But by reaching his crushed, mutilated heart.

Having encountered this soul in the world, the author has far less to say about this soul than hatred, fear, or any other type of soul. Despair is a result of having no real hope left. A soul left in this state is not gone, but it is close to the final stage of hate, wherein the soul fades away, leaving a husk of what used to be a human. Despair souls are marked, not by a sadness, but by an impossible coldness, like there's an infinite distance between them and everything else. They can act like they're happy, or sad, or angry all they want, but this soul can no longer feel those emotions at all, being almost incapable of emotion at all, almost like a soulless being.

Instead of making a long philosophical and introspection fueled description of despair/the soul of despair, I’ll just basically summarize it as “depression simulator”.

;w; What I love about all of these themes are that they bring out characteristics of each trait that is often ignored. For Despair, the battle intensity that one would not expect in such a gloomy trait makes perfect sense. When someone has gone too deep into despair, they're almost fighting to stay in the dark prison they've built. Refusing help without even realizing it, wallowing in one's own misery, ruminating within negative thoughts over and over again... the voice of Despair is aggressive in keeping its hold on its victim, yet passive in presenting it. This given theme perfectly captures this side of Despair, the side that people rarely acknowledge, let alone talk about. Awesome job!

DESPAIR. Is it fear, or something else entirely? To always look on subjects with a pessimistic outlook, it would be considered fear. But it just could be that Despair souls are prepared for the worst. They see what's hopeless in the hopeful, which can be considered a blessing or a curse. They can be seen as a voice of reason, getting others out of the hopelessness and despair that they're currently in. That's only one version of Despair, however. There are much bleaker versions of this trait... If you can even call it one. DESPAIR: After falling into hopelessness, you knew when to give up. YOU LOST?

Despair, a feeling of overwhelming weight. The idea that everything you've done, will do, or can even fathom won't be enough. A feeling of powerlessness that cripples even the strongest drive. Asgore wrapped himself in a layer of sunlight and flower pollen, but beneath the obviously thin facade was an intense burning despair. Nothing he could do would free him from the fate that was chosen. Even his own wife lost faith in his decisions, but he knew he had to do it even if it broke him. He didn't want to kill anyone, or gain any power, but he had no choice. At least, that's what he felt. At the end of the line he couldn't face his actions with a straight face. So badly he just wants to sit down and have a cup of tea, but he can't fathom the man he sees in the reflection of the drink. For Asgore, it wasn't just sparing that was a mercy, but indeed even death was a mercy. He would die with a smile on his face, finally freed from his despair, and even knowing it was all over, and there was no going back, he would smile that you, a human of infinite determination, are now the monarch of the new world. You would find a way to give him peace, and find a way that, at the end of the world, a happy ending for everyone, because in his heart he has forgotten what hope feels like.

Despair is known as a multi-faced negative trait. Those struck by it are affected randomly. It usually doesn't affect their goals, but their means to do whatever they want. It's much more about mindgames than the other traits. Fear actually makes out everything to be threatening, Hate makes out everything to be the enemy. Despair puts the problem not outside, but INSIDE you. By making yourself believe the plan you made with so much effort won't work due to external interferences. Despair can be compared to bullying, in a sense. It spreads out so that everyone seems aggressive towards yourself, then YOU turn out to be the monster when you actually fight it back. This trait is known for belittling/tuning off one's most prominent aspect, making it seem useless. If your speciality is about speaking and influencing others around you, it will make sure no one lets you speak, or even listen what you have to say. If you need peace and quiet to thrive on your ambience, it makes out so everything around you turns out to be noisy and unbearable. Despair, of all traits, seems like a parasite. Always analyzing and waiting for an opening to leech its prey off anything they could get in life. Pretty much like the song. Everyone before listening it had another impression on it, thinking the notes would be heavy, or fearsome, or out of tune somehow. But it's actually a marvelous, beautiful and harmonious composition that only grows into you. The start is sad, yes, but the sensation it gives after the first notes is like someone's approaching to teach you to DEAL with this feeling. Even at the end, when the guitar arrange seems to mimick panicking screams, the whole melody keeps its balance. So that on the last time the chorus hits, the guitar and the main melody are synced, just almost as if quarreling of whether or not to give in to the trait. And it just looks like after that, the whole feeling of panic is placated.

Despair - The Broken SOUL Some may look at Despair as a ghoul trying to drag anyone with them into the void they eventually fall to. However, Despair is far more tragic. A SOUL that has lost it's will to CONTINUE as it's Determination begins to wither and die. Soon, Despair will end their own existence as they give themselves to the void never to be seen again. No longer do they hold any morals or virtues all have been crushed and shattered from an unseen force from long ago. Despair sometimes attempts to drag anyone down with them as they see there is no hope for the world and sees it as an act of MERCY so they too don't suffer the same hurt they are feeling. One should not resent Despair, but rather SAVE them and show there is still a will to continue for the future. Despair has lost the will to live, but can your Determination help bring theirs back?

Despair's counterpart in the real world would be the various forms of Depression and Anxiety. These two categories of mental disorders affect as many as 1/5 of the global population, with many having a combination of these two. There are people living with negative thoughts, living with self doubt, living with a lethargic numbness, living with apprehensiveness, yet many have not been able to escape, even if they try. It does not help that these people would try to seek help, but also shy away from help due to the stigma associated with these mental disorders. They're often told that: it will go away on its own(Patience), or to get over it(Bravery), or false reassurances that it's okay(Kindness), or to endure it like a man/everyone else(Perseverance), or you chose to be like this and you can choose to be happy if you want to(Determination), or the world is an unfair place so if you want to get rid of this unfairness, you must make it fair for yourself by standing up for yourself(Justice), or this is not the real you and I know you can do it if you believe in yourself (Integrity). Their despair only reduces their perseverance to get help due to these "advices," and now, they will be fighting aggressively to keep what they're feeling a secret. And the combativeness of this song demonstrates this struggle, as they fight to stay inside their prison/closet, pushing away help for their "closet despair." The mixture of pity/sympathy from kindness, the apathy from patience, the harshness from perseverance, the nonchalance from bravery, the ignorance from determination, the sugarcoated words from integrity, and the lofty idealism from Justice makes the Despair even worse. They would want to escape from being pitied by kindness. They want to escape from being told by the same apathetic "common sense" from patience. They want to escape from the harshness of being told the same line: to endure it from perseverance. They want to escape the nonchalance of bravery, as if getting over it is an easy thing to do. They want to escape the ignorance of determination, who fail to understand that not everyone have a choice. They want to escape the cliched and sugarcoated words from Integrity, who repeats the empty words over and over. Finally, they want to escape lofty idealism from Justice, who speaks of an often unrealistic goal/dream when in the grips of despair.

"Despair." Just like Fear,this trait comes with two sides: The side where the owner had lost all hope,and is willing to end their own life,while the other would bring despair to all living beings.

Despair: To be without hope. Despair is an ironic heart due to existing, a living heart that has no desires, but cries for help. Wanting someone to show them hope through tears that beg for comfort in the futility of trying, to be proven wrong in its assumption that nothing matters, before becoming a husk that sees it redundant to destroy itself. Despair: The trait of no traits. Despair is the one point where all is not. The existence of it is ironic, as it is the lack of everything. By far it is the most deadly trait, as it is the source of stillness, the inability to change, overriding the ability to "continue" or "load". Hosts of this trait weild unimaginable destructive power. They are, however, very different from Hatred. The latter is violent, noisy, animalistic, forceful, and has a directed target, even if such is a group of entities; the former is disturbingly more insidious and dangerous. While hatred still latches itself onto something, despair is a standalone action, it is aimless, and anything that is touched by it will inevitably crumble and be reduced to the same void as itself. In a sense, hatred still establishes ties with something, the hated object; despair, however, lacks even that. It lies deep in the concept of nothingness, of inability and immobility. While hatred craves blood, despair is silent and hungerless, it wishes for nothing, it is the negation of everything, and in that, it becomes unstoppable. Despair: Insanity in your shadows. Once again a human has once “fell” into the underground. No one knows why or how but the human brought what they kept since their corruption..? A short worn rope whilst wearing a mask showing sadness on it. The human reminded the monsters of their doings and they all regretted it. No one was hurt but everyone felt lonely even around close monsters.

I think this is my favorite #YourTrait track so far. The opening _immediately_ captured the trait of despair, and I think this did the best job in the album so far of blending in the "Your Best Friend" motif with your original melodies. This also gives me a clear vision of a protagonist who just lost someone dear to him at the hands of the main antagonist and now has to fight said antagonist. I like how the Soul is halfway between purple (perseverance) and grey (neutral). Despair is when everything you've strived for, persevered for, is hopeless, and there is no longer hope. When you lose everything you've gone for, you begin to drown in apathy, you become indifferent, neutral towards everything. Despair is the loss of your trait, it's the failure or everything you lived for... What do you have now?

When Perseverance finds no reason to persevere. Did you sample parts of the perseverance track or is it my imagination? I'mma have to go listen to perseverance now. :D

I'm currently writing a story dealing heavily with inner demons, regret, self-fear, loneliness, trauma, all that jazz, (In fact, it's actually the plot for my take on a Fell Deltarune AU that I'm _really_ proud of.), and reading through all these deep comments is _amazing_ inspiration. So, thank you and everyone else here for all of that!

Despair, The creation of all negative traits. Integrity would become Deceitful Their despair of Truths and Lies blurred, the only way for them to get through is to lie. Kindness would snap screaming in rage and frustration, their despair of being taken advantage of making them Cruel. These examples are one of many the people that have endured so much rain snow and hell but get nothing in return, the despair of being abused and bullied creates many of these horrible traits. Aren't WE the reason these traits were created? We fought against them and yell at them for doing wrong but aren't we the ones who made them this way? In the end, Despair creates these traits full of sorrow and rage. But a trait full of pure unadulterated Despair, is nothing less then an absolute nightmare The pure pain and anguish it experiences day by day, Mourning and crying A despair soul fueled by their pain and sorrow in order to fight might as well be a losing battle. They know what places to target, who to kill, what to say They know how to break you down into a sobbing mess pleading for the pain to stop. The despair soul feels no sympathy nor emapthy, Sneering down at their creator with disgusted eyes. *Afterall, We caused this trait to be born with our very own hands.*

DESPAIR: A state that a Perseverant (purple hued) SOUL enters when they start to lose HOPE, that fuels their SOUL trait. If this state persists and worsens, the Perseverant soul will eventually become a Neutral SOUL. Perseverant SOULS gotten a hold of by this state are often victims of depression, anxiety, and maybe even other mental disorders. They loose motivation, and become pessimistic.

Despair, Now this this is an odd soul. To start, Despair, is a soul that is so utterly devoid of Hope that it literally chips away at ones power, Be it power gained through LOVE, or love, people with this soul loses it over time, another thing that happens, is the overwhelming desire to turn others into carriers of despair souls, and while they may be weak, they more than make up for it in numbers.. Anyways the other thing that differentiates this trait from the rest is well, unlike the others Despair can be taken out easily and such the soul itself often finds itself drawn to people with the soul of Fear as they seem to have some sort of odd co-existing...deal of sorts, as for other souls with negative traits, well, the fire of hatred can rile up anyone who doesn't possess a soul of neutrality, and well Neutrality isn't effected by the soul of despair like others are.

I'm just going to put my ideas for future corrupted SOULs down here, just in case you want to use them. Patience > Frustration Integrity > Treachery Kindness > Apathy Justice > Dishonesty Determination > Indifference

If Fear is the opposite of Bravery and Despair is the opposite of Perseverance (my guess), then... Patience -> Greed Kindness -> Envy Justice -> Wrath Integrity -> Mutability/Disregard/Apathy Determination isn't an attribute at all and more like a statistical value, similar to LV, so it doesn't really have an opposite. If I have to name an opposite, it would probably be Cowardice.

This is amazing! I love the techno and glitchy texture to it. Despair is kinda the opposite of Determination, where the person practically gives up or just doesn't know where to go. It can be the opposite of any trait actually, but not like Hate is. Kindness would give up being kind, Justice would give up being just, and so on and so forth. It's all sad really. EDIT: Seems as if this is an inverted trait of Perseverance. I remember the melody of that one.

Wow, Vetrom, I really like this one! As people say, it does seem to fit along with the other things here, and I love how it seems to emulate hopelessness and the feeling of being trapped. I also like the new instruments. You seemed to do this in a vastly different style than Neutral, Fear and your first few albums, and I like it, it's more versatile. Good job!

Despair. The antithesis of Hope, brought on by shattered Perseverance. A twisted, wilted belief that no matter what CAN be done, it won't BE enough. Despair is a common trait in this world, like Determination, being found to some degree in most other paragons. Despair can linger once brought about, waiting in the back of Perseverance's mind. Telling that that no matter how tough they are, they cannot go on. Despair, once brought on, will act like it's catalyst. Going on, fighting and yelling and running. It will go on until it is completely and utterly *shattered.* Despair, unlike Perseverance, has no true goal. It has lost sight of what it originally intended, and now only knows to defend itself against all that moves. When they fall into despair they will fight those who took everything from them without mercy. Once they have killed them they aim to bring despair to those without it. A despair soul is the only soul trait powerful enough to combat A hope soul.

Despair, like quite a few other parasitic traits is not indicative of the personality of the host, like hate is, it is more like a fear soul, it doesn't get power entirely from despair in the host, but from inflicting it in others, it is insidious and seeks to annihilate any and all hope, the traits' antithesis, because as long as hope remains, despair can be quite easily defeated. Like the other parasitic traits, despair can induce a horrid transformation to it's host, but unlike the brittle disguise that hides the jagged, crystalline fear transformation, the disguise of despair acts more like a fluid, melting off to reveal a beast that is reminiscent of a non-newtonian fluid, parts of its body sloughing off and melting only to rejoin it's body. The host is weak in upfront combat and knows it, and will bring its opponent's worst experiences back to life just how they first happened through morphing the sludge that makes up its body. And if there isn't any harrowing experience that will work from the opponents past, well, it will make one, with a bit of unwilling help from their loved ones. It will do anything to endure that its sickening reign lasts forever, even manipulating hosts of other parasitic traits into becoming its enforcers at risk of them growing in power and taking its seat.

what I got from this trait is how despair isn't a fight against an enemy or an ideal, it's the fight against yourself. It's a continuous battle against your own mind, thoughts, and beliefs. Your aren't attacking for gain, strength, or freedom, you are fighting just to make it through the day. In other words, you are fighting to stay alive and keep going. This also ties in with the faded purple of perseverance, as despair is the loss of all hope to keep going, or to persevere. Winning against this trait can be extremely hard, with many dying trying to win in their battle against it. But I feel that those that do become very strong mentally and/or spiritually. If victory is achieved, one will become a great perseverance soul, cable of whatever life can throw at them.

Despair: The moment where the drive to persevere in the face of adversity gives way to bitterness and sorrow so deep that even retribution feels worthless. As an example, when the idea that death has nothing to offer but a cold empty void where you will never feel the slightest ounce of joy. The idea that life is only given to you so that you will know what you will never have again. In such a state, life becomes an endless experience of sinking towards an inevitable hell that people mistake for sleep. Why wouldn't the body makes losing ones senses feel good to promote rest and allow it to repair itself? If the body didn't do that, sleep would just be a hell, just like death. Who would want to sleep if that were the case?

My god died one week ago, this is my soul right now, usually im perseverance but the emotional and physical pain was too much for me to take, i will miss her, and i hope you guys and gals do too, though you may not have known her, or met her, you should still feel sympathy.
