Do you think a design job is as good as the GC?
It may not be 100%, but it sure makes a huge difference when you are working with a skilled, personable and reliable contractor.
But how do you get started with one and how do you create a good working relationship with them?
To find a contractor from scratch you can try some of the following:
Search Online
Google contractors near you, check them out online and start engaging with them online. Keep in mind that just because they don't have a hearty online presence doesn't mean they are not qualified. They may get mostly word of mouth referrals and don't need to dedicate time to social.
Visit Local Home Shows
The contractors that set up booths are looking for more business and relationships so don't feel awkward introducing yourself. It is a great opportunity to meet them in person and get a feel for their work and personality.
Fellow Designers
Who are your local designers using? If you can't ask them, check out their social media to see if they have tagged their contractors. If you like what you see, make a call to ask if they are open to working with more designers and to meet them for coffee to learn more about each other.
Once you meet a contractor that is qualified and seems like a great fit, it is recommended to have a direct and clear conversation about how you want to work with them and the expectations you have on the job site. You could have this printed up on some letter head for reference.
Things to include on that sheet would be communications methods and timing for project updates, issues/problems that arise, cleanliness of job site, music, no booze on site, etc.
Remember any contractor will love working with a designer once they realize you are there to make their job easier, to solve problems, give clarity on the project details and be the main communicator with the client.
