Any species needs the first two in order to develop advanced and suicidally dangerous technologies like space flight, and any species needs the second two in order to come out on top at the competition against their peers. Non-curious civilizations never care to develop any technology. Non-reckless civilizations never dare to pass thresholds that can get them killed. @anthonyinzerillo28047 ай бұрын
@@averagegmail Your right, but most Western militaries only have the MIM-104 Patriot out of those systems and some type of CIWS (but mostly on ships). Many NATO members are not well equipped with airdefense, ADATS is also not widespread. Also the other systems mentioned are all stationary and not perfectly suitable for a warfare like in Ukraine and the missiles are extremely expensive. What I meant is that NATO forces lack highly mobile short- and medium-range SAM systems with cheaper ammunition. Basically NATO most forces rely on MANPADS for mobile AD. I think the current war clearly shows the need for such systems, especially to counter the huge amounts of drones that will appear on future battlefields. Just imagine the sheer amount of drones China or even Iran would unleash in a possible future war. China could use several hundred thousand of FPV drones...
@averagegmail7 ай бұрын
@@anthonyinzerillo2804 For drone swarms, I do not think SAMs will be very useful at all. I believe the C-RAM (the ground based CIWIS) would be useful, but my main choice would be the mobile German Gepard. As it fires slower with better accuracy, it will conserve ammunition for dealing with the most drones possible. The downside is only a few South American and European countries operate it, (including Ukraine and excluding Romania).

Unlike Pantsir this guy is practically ideal for it's niche. The missile is a bit dated, but otherwise okayish product for most militaries. What's the problem with the missile? Existence of Pantsir-M2 and Buk-M3. It's not a close range system since that one is covered by Pantsir and in russian own sources latest Tor is inferior to latest Buk by range by about 2 times at least. No one is going to buy 15 different systems to cover variable factions of 40km half sphere. Even russians themselves don't. So they need to decide if Buk-M3 or Tor-M2 would be staying and update the remaining system to cover the niche fully. As it stands, Tor-M2 is apparently competing even with ukraino-belarusian Osa-1T/Stilet T-38. And that's heavily modified Osa. Tl:dr cool, but apparently redundant even for Russia itself vehicle.

Those are the problem of longer ranged SAMs that need to intercept the planes AND of Pantsir... that should be modernized to be able to serve in CIWS/CRAM capacity to intercept munitions and drones. Which would require an update of optoelectronic system to be able to reliably operate in all conditions without radar giving you away to HARM, an update of munituons to implement programmable airburst munitions aka AHEAD and update of electronics and software to be able to track small projectiles and objects. Which would result in basically a new system. Which Russia can't handle. But I was commenting on Tor-M2, not on Pantsir. @@hypersonichobo4263
