Could you share in your experience some advice for more stability focused careers? I’m interested in doing a Nuke compositing course in London but I have a nice salary job right now and don’t really want to be left with no work after jumping around contracts. I’m happy to do more mundane commercial work than film/game as I know there’s a lot of competition for the movie industry. I would take slightly lower pay for job security

One thing I want to mention here is the Indian perspective. As he says in the video India is growing like crazy in VFX and it's true, India is growing but you should remember that NONE OF THE SALARY NUMBERS SHOWN HERE HAPPEN IN INDIA. As a junior, you will get almost nothing. Rich kids might get more pocket money than your salary. The industry doesn't work on an hourly rate here. The industry is growing here it's true, you have big studios like MPC, DNEG, Framestore, Mr.X but they only do bulk shots here that means you will mostly be running setups or create very small setups even as a senior. The Indian VFX industry is very different than what you see here. All those points about long working hours and weekend work happen twice here, you might do 12hrs job daily AND ALSO THERE is NO OVERTIME PAYMENT. Basically, India feels like an illegal labour market for VFX where big western studios just exploit us. Now you might say what if I work in the local studios? Local studios are even horrible they don't care about anything, even your death. Irregular payments, extremely long work hours (sometimes you may spend weeks in the studio) lots of stress and unrealistic deadlines are very common in local studios. THE GOVERNMENT DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR EXPLOITATION. So, don't we get a good life as VFX artists in India? Sure you will if you have skill here you will get a good amount at least in Indian standards but you have to make the choice here. Do you want to create the flashy shots that you see in the showreels of your favourite VFX artists? then no India is not for you, you will barely get such shots here as the Western studios don't send any. The hiring criteria here is extremely low, some studios here have the largest teams. So, if you don't really stand out you won't go to that "good enough for India" salary bracket. Also when you reach that bracket you get more work, more stress, more pressure and remember no overtime pay so I guess the only good life for Indian VFX artists is to get out of India with proper skills. These days you can learn from websites like Rebelway and others so do learn well, learn from production if you are already in it and try going out. Of course, this also depends on what you want to do. You have your family, friends here etc so going out can be very challenging but I guess that's how it is. Hope this helps the newcomers and you know what you are getting into. As a junior or even unskilled mid-level, you might not do a lot of overtime but again your salary will be low too but once you have got skills and you are standing out try going outside if that is your goal or if you are willing to.

this was a great read i find it annoying that i have to move places if i want high salary but i am still learning so who knows when i finish my course the things get better
@ron4431
@ron4431 2 жыл бұрын
@@the_cytrowave_artist Sadly it won't change. The entire reason why India is so famous on the VFX map is because of less salary like that's the selling point but if you are wondering about salary to live in India as I said in my original comment you will get a pretty good one according to the standards of the city you are living in if you are good enough. So, try to be really good and your salary will be taken care of. The only thing you will never get is salary + amazing hero shots, for that yeah you have to switch places.

@ron4431
@ron4431 2 жыл бұрын
@@Starkage892 you start in India, work 3-5 years with consistency. Do some good shots even if not extraordinary and then apply outside. But remember a lot of foreign studios hire Indians in very low salary , don’t fall for that trap. Do your research well and only accept the money that you think you deserve and will give you a good life there. Or if you’re rich, get into Lost Boys school of VFX and then get job in Canada only

What a great video!! 12:39 India has really been growing lately but the pay here is very bad tbh. A intern in US might get $15 per hour but here in India they might get $15 or less for a day! That's why most artist do freelance work here (This is from what I've heard from people on online forums and some KZfaqrs who have worked in the bollywood industry.)

Pay here is bad but not as much as you think. You aren't accounting for the cost of living. You can earn more through freelancing but again it's not that stable as job and companies don't like hiring freelancers.

Great video with a lot of valuable information. The only thing that I can say was not very accurate were the salaries. I know these stats are from Zip Recruiter, but lawyers and architects definitely make way more money than 80k a year. I’ve been a graphic designer for almost 15 years and was making more than the 40-50k range mentioned here after two or three years.
@Rebelway
@Rebelway 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the feedback Eric. And yes, you are totally right. Lawyers and Architects have the potential to make almost an unlimited amount of money because they basically can become their own boss and own their own company, whereas it is much more challenging for a VFX artist to become the owner of a larger studio. So for lawyers and architects, the ceiling is much higher financially. Whereas the best-paid VFX Supervisor in the world probably makes $200-$250K compared to millions by the best-paid lawyer.

hey man i absolutely love this video keep up the good job i have a quick question. you says average vfx artist make 51442 dollar per year. ok. divided by 12 that is 4286 dollar per mounth you work 8 hour per day (if you work more that is an extra) that is 40 hour so that is 107 dollar /hour. acording to your calculation it is 25 dollar per hour can you explain it to me why is the differernt so big? Thank you.
@Rebelway
@Rebelway Жыл бұрын
Hey! It has to do with the strange way in which many VFX artists actually make money. Most aren't on salary, but rather are contractors with overtime options and more than 8 hour days. So in the end it all ends up being around that $50K number. Again, salaries are a little more complicated in the VFX industry, but i've confirmed with others that the numbers listed here are accurate.
@franzkern

@@mikestan8353 The US goverment is to blame for this. It affects both US and those employed abroad by American companies. The only ones who benefit are the corporations, and of course, goverment. I used to work in IT years ago, my company (large corporation) hired freelancers overseas and paid them pennies. They also paid us nothing for the labor we provided. Working for an American company, is often abusive. I'm glad non-american companies are paying you better though.
