Hi Fivos Sakellis ! This procedure can be applied to 80% of 70s, 80s, 90s common VCR models. Most of models produced after 2000 are often designed in "instant noodles style", which used 1 time and difficult to replace and align. To adjust the horizontal azimuth, I use an L-shaped eccentric stick. I bought this tool from a retired serviceman , I don't know its name or part number.

@@misu4602 Have you ever done dihedral adjustment on a Betamax video head? On the Betamax alignment tape, the monoscope section has the head switching point visible in the middle of the frame, and to adjust the horizontal azimuth, you look immediately below the switching point to see if the video fields split apart. The head disk on Beta VCRs has threaded holes and there are special conical-shaped screws that you put through the holes to shift the position of the head that way, instead of using an L-shaped key.

Hi rsuryase ! We can use Video Head Chips of one brand on other brands , but must ensure that they must be the same type , Ex : SP head , LP head , SP/LP head , Hi-Fi head , Erase head , each type has azimuth and azimuth- pieces, they must be correct position.

@@misu4602 So with the more recent VCRs like Panasonic HD620, it seems virtually impossible to perfectly align the Azimuthal setting of Head Chip..

Hello Weakbit ! There are many types of video head chips, their resistance and inductance is also different so the FM amplitude will also be different. We cannot find a replacement head that is the same as the original head, so after alignment , the FM amplitude between the changed head A and the original head B will not be exactly the same. The purpose of the alignment is to get the highest FM amplitude from the changed head. Video heads have positive and negative azimuth, and they have different color rules according to the manufacturer. According to experience, if the color pair is blue - green, then blue is negative, green is positive. If red-green pair, red is positive, green is negative. If green - yellow pair, then yellow is positive, green is negative. If blue - red pair, then red is positive, blue is negative. For example if the original pair (O) are "blue- green" , we can replace them with the new pair (N) : "green- red" that mean blue_O → green_N ; green_O → red_N (for reference) That is experience, may not be accurate as each manufacturer may be different. To be more certain, a microscope should be used to determine the azimuth angle.

Hi Morteza Parkook ! If you use the original tape transport control and servo circuit board , it will not work when remove the head drum block because of no drum rotate detection. In this case , video heads don't matter much for play the tape without image and it is no need to remove the head chips on the head drum. If you use your re-built control circuit , you can remove the head drum block.

The basic processing of Betamax head replacement is the same as VHS but Betamax is mor difficult. I'm going to learn about this process.

Head chips and gear parts are still inventory at VCR repair service centers but now becoming to probably rare.

For the best result in head replacement work , you could buy new video upper drum block to replace in your VCR, you will not have to do any delicate alignments but it is necessary to find right part number (please see in service manual of each model). If you can't buy right video upper drum block , you could do this work by replacing head chips (as this clip) , but this work need much delicate alignments. You need to buy new video head chips to do this work . Video head chips were sold in my country in the 90's as universal parts , they are general-purpose and can be compatible with most VCR models. I don't know their part number . I bought back the inventory of a electronic component seller . These video head chips are no longer manufactured and sold in the market but may be still stock in service center or 修理センターin 日本 . Please try contacting them for more informations.
