Quarterflash were a rarity - a band where FEMALE lead singer also was the sax player! Rindy Ross formed the band with her husband Marv, and they enjoyed their greatest success in the first half of the 80s. They didn't call it quits, though ... they put out a new album just last year! This was their first big hit, but they had to others, "Find Another Fool" and "Take Me To Heart". Both are excellent. P.S. Another early 80s female led band you should check out is The Motels. "Only the Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer" are classics. Laura Branigan is another great one, too ("Self Control")

This was a hit when they were known as “Seafood Mama” in Portland, Oregon, a rock group that became a popular nightclub band. Membership included Rindy Ross (lead vocals and saxophone) and her husband Marv Ross (guitars). Circa 1980/'81 they revamped the band -- adding Jack Charles (guitars), Rick DiGiallonardo (keyboards/synthesizers), Rich Gooch (electric bass), and Brian David Willis (drums and percussion), becoming Quarterflash.

Her husband Marv, the bass player, wrote the song. I think she is trying to convey being strong when you have to walk away sometimes. For any Quarterflash fans out there, check your vinyl copy of their first album. If you have a first printing, it may be worth something - there is a printing error on the back. The printers actually misspelled the record label name a couple of times - "Gellen" records instead of "Geffen".

Omg I have that and it does say "Gellen"!

@@dustywaynemusic6297 You might want to look into what its worth. I have a copy of that album, but for me to check into the value would be pointless as mine is autographed by the entire band. Autographs tend to lower the value for album collectors, but may have value to autograph collectors. Since Quarterflash didn't hit the stratosphere in terms of their career, I doubt that autograph hunters are bidding really high for this one. Might be a different story for album collectors though.

@@rubicon-oh9km That's on ebay. I wouldn't trust ebay pricing. Check with REAL collector's, not someone that likely doesn't know what rhey have.

Great 80s track! I totally forgot this one. For female singers from the 80s, I recommend Rough Trade's "All Touch" and Martha and The Muffins "Echo Beach"... both are Canadian bands with female vocals.

Another great female-fronted band from the 80's was Missing Persons. Lead singer Dale Bozzio was way ahead of her time. She was the precursor to Lady Gaga. My favorite song of theirs was "Words" (What Are Words For?). Even though it wasn't really my genre at the time, I saw them at the Beacon Theatre (NYC) in 1984.

I would often hear this song on the radio when it came out and I always liked it but for over 10 years I never knew about Quarterflash as I always assumed it was Pat Benatar. I remember losing a bet to a friend and having to buy him a drink when he showed me his record. If you are looking for another band with a female lead you may want to check out "Martha and The Muffins" with some of their songs: "Echo Beach", "Women Around The World at Work" and my favorite "Cooling The Medium".
