Experience the rare and exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the 1000-foot Great Lakes ship, the American Century, filmed in June 2024. This is the only full ship tour video that exists online to date, approved by the American Steamship Company, offering a unique look at the operations and crew of one of the largest ships navigating the Great Lakes.
Join me as I explore the American Century at the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal dock, where it was loading coal. Witness the impressive loading process, with coal being poured into the cargo hold, and many features on the ship's 1000-foot deck. Safety is paramount to the American Steamship Company, and Mike Briner, an industry expert respected by all, who leads the safety, security, and health programs, provides a personal tour.
Inside the ship, meet Jennifer, the passionate chief cook who loves taking care of the crew with her delicious meals. From pizza night, Taco Tuesday, to her famous cowboy burgers, Jennifer shares her culinary expertise and dedication to making the crew feel at home. She also prepares brisket and experiments with other recipes to ensure the crew enjoys their meals. I showcase her spotless kitchen and the dining room prepared for an upcoming meal.
Mike Briner, who is well-known in the industry, explains various ship operations during our tour. We cover the hatch crane and the lookout area, answering common questions from ship enthusiasts. My tour covers the entire deck from stern to bow, offering unparalleled views and insights into the daily operations of this colossal vessel. You’ll see many fascinating aspects of the ship that you have to watch the video to fully appreciate.
In the second half of the video, we watch the American Century depart from the water on the Boat Friends Boat. The unique part of this video is that after touring and speaking with the crew, we now watch the ship in action. I follow the ship in the Boat Friends Boat, capturing the best perspectives as it leaves the dock, passes through the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge with a horn salute, and heads out onto Lake Superior.
On behalf of all Boat Friends worldwide, we extend a heartfelt thanks to the American Steamship Company, especially Mike Briner for his exceptional tour, David Desmarais, and to President Kevin McMonagle, for making this behind-the-scenes tour possible.
The American Steamship Company is a leader in the industry, treating their employees like family and prioritizing safety and excellence.

First, I'd like to send out a big thanks to the American Steamship Company (ASC) for inviting Vibe with Mike to visit the American Century. I know this fulfills a dream Mike never thought would be possible. This was all made possible by Kevin and David from ASC corporate in New York. Again, thanks so much fellows for helping spur this unique partnership. Together with Mike's channel, many many folks from all over the world will learn more about ASC and Great Lakes shipping. Mike from ASC did a fantastic job leading the tour of the American Century. He answered numerous questions and provided neat insights into the deck operations of this massive footer. It's obvious to me Mike enjoys his job and represents his company in a very professional manner. I really enjoyed learning from Mike and look forward to more of his tours in the future. And a big shout-out and thanks to chief steward Jennifer. I agree with Mike in that the galley looks so clean and organized. Geez....I'm hungry right now just thinking about all those yummy dishes!! And much of it home-made. Thanks so much Jennifer for describing your important role on the American Century. Good food helps make for a happy crew. As one of Mike's Boat Friends, I can't wait to learn more and more from these types of onboard videos. There is no question they help personalize the Great Lakes shipping industry. Yes the ships are awesome, but without the ASC folks like Mike and Jennifer the ships wouldn't move....they wouldn't haul, and they wouldn't have a reason to salute with their horns. Safe travels to the Captain and crew of the American Century.

@@vibewithmike Often, when a ship is entering the canal entering the harbor you can actually hear them unlocking the hatches. If you get a next time on the deck of a ASC ship and get a chance to talk to a crew member a close up of how the hatch locks work would be so cool That Chef sure does prepare some great sounding meals!

Hey Mike and All THE GLOBAL BOAT FRIEND NATION. Looks like a beautiful day in Dtown as was here in Bismarck albeit a little windy. What a great day for all of he Boat Friends thanks to he great folks and fellow Boat Friends with ASC to allow us to come on board. You really get a true perspective as to how big these vessels are, and easy to see they are over 3 Football fields long from bow to Stearns. Interesting to see the coal is really pulverized down, and to see the loading system which is much different than the system used for taconite pellets. The iron ore pellets are basically dropped down chutes by gravity into the cargo hold. The coal,is loaded using a Buhler type system using conveyor belts which the operator on board drops the coal straight down into the hold. Cargill B was the first elevator on the harbor to use the Buhler system for, loading grain, and now I see they are doing the same for coal. This coal comes from Colstrip Montana, and two unit trains per day come through Bismarck each day going to Duluth. Looking down the Bow of the vessel while loading I see the old Elevator S, but is do not know what it is called now but I spent a lot of time working in that elevator when i lived there. Also interesting was the Galley, and the cook was proud of her station as she should be. Sounds like she really tries to keep things changing so no one gets bored, but there are some favorites as she mentioned. This was a great video Mike, really got to see a whole different side of the equation for sure. Three long and two short for ASC for allowing us to come aboard, and safe passage for the good ship and crew, as well as a safe shipping season. Mike, what can I say, you really Brought the Thunder this time big fella!!!!

What a great, informative briefing on the ship’s operations. Thanks for including the train shot but I need to correct your statement about the “freight train departing”. The train you shot was actually a loaded coal train arriving at the coal dock. Arriving, loaded trains go around the coal storage area on the outer loop then transition to the inside loop on the west side of the facility. The coal cars are rotary-dumped, several at a time, back on the east side. The train you shot is BNSF train C SCMSUD. (Coal loads from Spring Creek Mine, MT to Superior, WI docks. Three trains per day depart Spring Creek on this route to supply Detroit Edison. The empty trains return as symbol E SUDSCM. Thanks again for the great tour and ALL your great videos.

Hi Mike ! We hadent heard from you in a couple of days ? Wernt shure if yo got hired on ? Or became a stowaway ? I am sure it was memorable experience for you ! i can tell from that photo on your website that thing is huge ! A different scale than just watching it go by You got Vip treatment ! We at boat friends are looking forward to the reveal of your experiences ! In 44 hoirs ! There is no one more dererving or appreciate it more than you ! I hear they got the michipacoten patched up and the water pumped out Sitting on a even keel I am not sure if they under water welded ? used a canvas patch ? Flex tape ? Or what they use to do in the old days on the riveted hulls ? they made a putty out of horse manure and straw With a scoop on a long pole and ran it along the seams of the ship Water pressure would suck the mixture into the cracks stopping the leak ! Once they transfer the cargo to the Manitoulin They can open the double bottom and acess the damage from the inside ? Since the crack is 15 feet and the crease over 40 feet long (bumped something in the past ) They can determine if it is good folded metal or frames giving way to rot ! The ship wont move untill marine experts look at it and the department of transport gives it the ok to travel to drydock if it is repairable or mabe towed to the ship grave yard ? Luckey it wasnt rought The crack could of worsened and there would be another dive site in lake superior ! Have a great day !>

Thanks sooo much Mike and the ASC!! Mike, when you did a 360 degree spin on the deck of the American Century, I expected to see a film crew tagging behind you...your videos look so professional!! The train that we saw leaving the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal dock was one of 6 or 7 that were needed to fill this massive ship. That is between 750 and 800 rail cars of coal...if my assumptions are right. I'd love to hear from our ASC Boat Friends on how close my estimate is. Thanks again, Mike!

Hello once again my, and many others, friend. I'm going to use the words double jealous right now because I am not sure of another word that says such as to how I, and I'm sure many others, are feeling of you. This is truly amazing because we get a behind the scenes look at what the workers of the American Century, and many other ships, do, and not only that but the icing on the cake of what different parts of the ships do, all for us. If I've not mentioned it before I love trains and airports by them, but what you've shown, ships and trains, reaches a whole other level, and it tells me that you listen to and know what your friends like; hand shake and thanks on that. Noow I tell you what would be awesome, to be a guest of Mike and be able to eat in the galley of what I'm sure is great prepared food. This country needs more videos of people like Mike and Jennifer working behind the scenes to know what they do, but it also gets them known, she seems very happy to have been made known like this, kudos again to you my friend. The view you had on the deck I'm sure was great. My wife and I went to Charleston, SC for our 25th wedding anniversary and toured the USS Yorktown CVS-10 AirCraft Carrier, and it was exciting, so I know that experience. To be short, BIG THANKS to you once again for another greta video and The ASC for allowing such. Thanks to all the men & women on these ships that work so that we have. Many happy and safe voyages Jennifer.
