In this Student Spotlight lesson, I will help Erick develop a strong controlled vibrato technique on the guitar.
No matter what style you play, having a nice controlled vibrato is essential. It is how we give life to the notes.
For a majority of players having issues developing a consistent vibrato technique, the reason is becasue they are attempting to use smaller muscle groups instead of larger muscle groups. I think you can see this in Erick demosntrations.
I will demosntrate how the finger's job is to simply stay stable on the string, while the power behind the vibrato comes from the forearm by doing short rotations. That way you will have ore strength and control. You are also using the weight of your arm to help you with the vibrato.
I hope this helps Erick!
Thanks!
Carl...

My guitar teacher in high school told us that with vibrato you always have an axis, middle point. The skill is to vibrato equally on either side of the middle axis point, otherwise it sounds like a sloppy bend. I am still trying to get it right. Especially if doing vibrato at the top of a one, one-and-a-half or a two full tone bend.

any chance you can do a video on how to add vibrato to bends? thats where i struggle the most =)
@Maltino_Music
@Maltino_Music 6 жыл бұрын
it is actually quite similar to the "usual" vibrato technique. First you have to bend to the pitch and afterwards you repetitively go below and above the pitch. The most important thing is consistency so that your vibrato sounds controlled. And keep in mind adding vibrato after you have reached the targeted pitch. One last tip: don't bend with your fingers, rather do it with your wrist, as your fingers are not able to hold the pitch as consistent as the wrist.

Lemonsweet i know the way its done, but executing it is easier said then done, i can do slow vibrato but now a medium to fast one. Would love it he could explain his technique and maybe show exercises to improve controlling the vibrato after you reach the desired note (but thanks for taking the time to try to help, i appericiate it =) )

@@Maltino_Music BAD advice to go above and below the pitch. Only go ABOVE the pitch, then return to the pitch (repeatedly). That's pretty much the whole challenge of vibrato on a bend.
@damarisbenzar3706
@damarisbenzar3706 Жыл бұрын
@joe Thank you so much for saying that! (I cringed when I saw the advice saying to go above and below the pitch…) When you vibrato you always have to come back to the original note or else it just sounds out of tune/sloppy.

The issue with changing your fretting hand technique is it feels really weird. I always used the thumb over the neck just for the vibrato but it is possible to have really nice vibrato with thumb behind the neck (not wide though) - just check Chris Poland!

The bend sounded like a cartoon sound when Carl went below the pitched tone on the way down to demonstrate what you should not do. Hilarious.

I don’t feel like I can get any speed or bend it far enough to get a good vibrato when you rotate my arm like that tho. Is there any other pointers? I don’t get how people are getting a good sound from it and I can’t
@jcmusic7285
@jcmusic7285 4 жыл бұрын
It's just practice like anything. Think back to when you first learned the instrument, did anything sound good then? Overtime, I'm sure a lot of what you learned in the beginning sounds good now. I struggled (still do) with nice vibrato using the arm but have noticed that there is a drastic improvement compared to how my old vibrato sounded. Just time and practice. There aren't many pointers aside from what Carl mentioned in this video. Cheers and best of luck with your guitar journey!
@kkarx
@kkarx 3 жыл бұрын
One really needs to listen to the tone. Find a player with vibrato you like and try to copy it. Once you know what you want to do it is only about practicing. You might not achieve exactly the same result and it is fine, these little differences will form your own signature style.

Thanks for breaking this down, Carl! I've been trying this a while, and if it takes a long time to learn, I'd like to know. A friend said 15 minutes a day for two weeks, but I just don't have it yet. Also, what about fret height? Can you do vibrato on micro frets, and is there a trick to it?

You can just do a classical guitar-style vibrato for microtones, like the techniques shown here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ecCKh72Is9LVqI0.html
