A random Corvair story: In the late '60's I was helping a farmer friend on his Minneapolis-Moline Uni-Harvester (farm implement). Fortunately I knew that Corvair generators also turned backwards and were easy to find and cheap. Quick bolt-on fix!

I'm really happy to see you saved a Corvair! Me and a friend of mine bought one as a project car back in high school. Learned a lot about these cool but goofy cars. One of the most important tools we got was a carb balancer to balance out the dual carb setup. Once we went through it all and had it running it sounded amazing with glass packs and the carbs balanced. Much more like a V8 actually. I'd love to own another Corvair again. So many upgrade options for them now so you don't need that crazy 90 degree v belt along with EFI upgrades with a single throttle body fuel injection system.

I helped my Dad fix up a '62 Corvair Monza back in the 1980s. He had a friend who was an interior upholsterer so he got that done for cost. He put tires, drums, shoes, and bearings all around. did a complete rebuild on the engine and patched up the exhaust. Then I spent half a summer sanding the body getting the 1.5 billion door dings and paint chips. The only damage that needed was one of the tail lights from my sister allowing it to roll back and into a wall in a Manhattan Beach parking lot. The car was a California car so hit had only surface rust on the chrome. Anyway, Dad finally got it painted and sold it. It was the prettiest Corvair of the 15 he had. Nice job getting it going. That sound is one I remember fondly. Thank You.

It was a blast watching this episode. I had a 62 in high school that was in very similar condition. The floor pan area looked identical. We would rock the seat for fun as we went down the street, or toss sunflower seeds out the rust holes to the perpetual trash can below. The ignition will only needed a key to get out of "locked" mode. I rarely used the key. Once you get it running, carry an extra fan belt as those belts snapped frequently due to the extreme angles. Mine had an issue with the gearshift popping out of the socket of the shifter rod (the gearshift does not connect directly to the transmission, but connects to a rod that goes back to the trans). This will be fun to see what you do with it.

Nice seeing a Corvair, I have a soft spot for the little oddball vehicles. Thought the Corvair was railroaded back in the day. Could this be your next Road Track Car? You have the best help in the world with you. So good to see family values as #1. Thanks for all you and your family do.

Ralph Nader wrote a book about the Corvair. Unsafe At Any Speed. It was (somewhere) noted that on a worn out suspension (like the one you have) the swingarm could overflex on an aggressive, harsh, bumpy turn and stick under the frame causing the car to flip. Unlike the Beetle, it doesn't have a stop to prevent that. Could you check out that claim? Maybe see if it is possible to push it under while on a lift? At least look at the design at that spot. Thanks for posting your projects.

I just love Derek's little mini me- Bentley. He's a great helper and learning valuable knowledge while sharing quality time with his dad. Those boys already know more about vehicles than some grown men. These are truly valuable lessons that will help them their entire life. Just love it when an engine comes to life after so many years. Keep wrenching and we'll keep watching. Stay safe and GOD bless

I owned several old Corvair’s back in the 70’s. They were good old cars and ran well for what they were. It was a shame Ralf Nader put a end to its production. The motor mount was rumored to break and miter fall down in the rear…..never happened to me. They are simple little car. Enjoyed your attempt to revive the old girl

This video giving me some motivation to go and work on my Corvairs. One engine has a dropped valve seat and the other has a spun crank - but have a doner engine ready to install. The good running Corvair needs some jug cooling fin deflashing. Just love these Corvairs!!! This video was awesome - made me grin from ear to ear 😊😁😁😁

Love this channel, and also love my son's reaction every time Derek says "We'll just ignore that" or "I'm gonna go ahead and pretend I didn't see that". Literally recoils in horror.😂 You know what though? Every time I see one of them rust holes or bondo jobs, I just want to teleport there and do the ACTUALLY right thing, by laboriously welding every single hole that shouldn't be there shut.🤣

@@bb5242 That "horrible engine design" won countless races mounted in the back of various Porsches, from the early 4-cylinder 356 and 550 models through the iconic 6-cylinder 911 series and, in 12-cylinder form the virtually unbeatable 917 that dominated Sports Prototype racing both in the U.S. and Europe in the late 60's and early 70's. I have owned over a dozen Corvairs since 1980, and haven't had an engine failure yet. My latest one puts out 220 rwhp from 2.8 litres... on pump gas. No power adders like a Turbo, supercharger, or nitrous (On a side note, did you know that the 1962 Corvair Monza Spyder was the world's first successful turbocharged production car? "Terrible engine"). Never met a street legal 5.0 Fox body that I couldn't take in a drag race. I know that you didn't say anything about handling, but with just a few easy chassis mods (lowering springs, adjustable gas shocks, larger sway bars, poly bushings) she easily ran away from an Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce on a hilly, twisty Pocono Mountain back road. This "terrible engine" never needs a coolant flush and never needs a new radiator or hoses... because it doesn't have them!

@@bb5242 Those cars were death traps. They had an optional gasoline heater under the hood. It sounded like a little engine running. In the '70s down in SoCal I saw one with fire coming out of the back driving down the road. I caught up with the driver and told him to pull over. He didn't know that the car was on fire. Leaking push rod tubes.

My dad had a 61 Corvair that he bought new. By the time it was four years old, it had the same hole in the rear floor as this one. My brother and I would fill our pockets with gravel and, as the car rolled down the road, we would toss stones through the holes, then jump up and look out the back window and watch the pebbles bounce on the road. Yes, this was considered fun in 1964! I've had a soft spot in my heart for Corvairs ever since.
