Yesterday afternoon, Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson went to Capitol Hill to ask for an extension of the Authorization for Use of Military Force, the law that allows the U.S. to continue to wage wars against those responsible for the 9/11 attacks.
Meanwhile, more than 4,000 US troops will be deploying to Afghanistan this Fall, as the conflict enters its 17th year. The US already has around 8,500 troops on the ground in the region, but this new effort is a bid to boost a combat force tasked with destroying the Taliban.
And so, 16 years after the beginning of the Afghan conflict, VICE News joined the 3rd Infantry Division of Fort Stewart, Georgia, as a new generation of soldiers marches off to war.

The Taliban now controls more territory than it ever has. After 16 years of constant combat and roughly $714 billion spent by Americans to purge the terror group, the Taliban looks its strongest, establishing footholds in nearly every single province. Also all the fighting and intel gathering is done by special forces and special operations like ranger battalions, JSOC Teams, Recon Marines etc... His detachment will be sent there with support role, like for example registrating unidentified civilian population... doing paperwork or common stuff around the area where he will be stationed in.

As an early iraq/09-10 Afghanistan veteran i take offense to your poorly thought out comment. A civilian may live to be 100. A Soldier might live to be maybe 18 or even 30 yrs old and will have lived 100 times the life the 100 yr old will have lived. Respect is not given but earned and weather they were by my side in iraq in 2006 or my afghan deployment in 09 they have earned much more than any civilian has and that extends to the woman that awaited us faithfully at home.

It's sad when people say things like, "these people will probably never see combat". Sure, so that means that what they're doing is any less honorable? That we shouldn't still pray for them? That we shouldn't still worry for their families? Whether they ever see combat or not, we should remember their sacrifice. They voluntarily decided to enlist, knowing that theres a probability that they will be deployed and away from the families for months. They still sacrificed and I will never forget that. God bless all who serve/served. It's men and women like these that I thank each and everyday, because if it wasn't for them and the people who served before them, I'm not sure where myself or anyone else would be today.

You protected areas that are to be used by mining corporations... just like oil over in the other countries, Afghanistan was found by us recently to have over 1 trillion dollars in rare minerals, including the ''saudi arabia of lithium'' which has boomed with the use of lithium batteries from cell phones everyone uses, to electric cars included which are booming. That is why homie, look up ''afghanistan trillion in rare minerals found by USGS" and look at all those articles you will see come up.

I remember when my grandpa died and we buried him in the military cemetery, walking around looking at all the headstones of the 19-21 year old kids who died in the Iraq war. There were so many of them and it had a lasting impression on me my entire life up into adult hood. 11 years after growing up watching and seeing footage of the Iraq war most of my child hood I ended up deploying there. Its pretty crazy to think we are still sending our sons and daughters to these places when the Afghanistan war began in 2001 and the Iraq war in 2003.

What hit my heart really was the fact that they are smiling and stuff and they know that they may not come back. We may have stared at faces that belong to someone who is now dead. Some may not come back and others may come back fine, and finally some will come back but not the person that left for deployment,

Exactly how I feel... its all about the lithium folks, ive been saying it for years... i wish more people would pass the news about how ''trillions of dollars in rare minerals were found in afghanistan'' recently. THe troops often report sitting in areas with nothing around, put 2 and 2 together folks, you are paid to protect the ground for gold dust and lithium rocks for cell phone batteries, that is truly what it is all about, corporations getting cheap minerals for big profits. Even china is using child labor for mining in afghanistan!

I wasn't in the Marines for that long but even so, I had half the mindset of a trained Marine. My argument may waft at the flames now, but hey, I gotta say it... We're bored. We gotta kill something and show our American muscles to the other large countries somehow. Sure, let's go take their resources and die in the process. Its how the world works. It can't be changed. Be what the world is gonna be, or that all peace mindset we have will just spark more bloodshed. Look at BLM. Antifa. They want peace for their own kind, which ends to violence. You either get a fight, or a bigger fight. That's the world now, sorry. Gotta do what we gotta do as military personnel, Americans, and human citizens. To my boys and gals overseas; kill 'em all. Let their God sort 'em out. Take out the oppressors of Afghanistan, avenge our fallen brothers and sisters, and get them resources. OORAH! Get some, soldiers!

China, *Russia, and US are the biggest nations in Afghanistan since 1980s... all and only because AFGHANISTAN IS EASY TO GET CHEAPEST MINING OF MINERALS. China fights taliban also for cheap mining of rare minerals... its all about the trillions in lithium, every big nations wants to control the lithium for your cell phone battery to work! It's the biggest new market, lithium, and afghanistan has ''trillions in rare minerals found recently'', search it!*

Taxpayers' money goes into the air! Money is eaten in the army and there is no victory over the world evil by terrorists! In the army, a mediocre command which puts its soldiers under bullets! It's a shame! Ha ha! For 16 years in Afghanistan, the US has not achieved any positive results! 60% of the territory of the Taliban, and in fact they only AK-47! On the coalition's foundation, the impact drone and billions of taxpayer money are spent with zero result! The parasites!

Ugo Barbarino I think every soldier and service member understands that. But at the end of the day, to most it is just a paycheck. Very few honestly "serve" for their country.

For most people, it's just work! Trump is ready to put under the gun all the young population of America! This is all an inefficient spending! No talented officers in command from this great loss! For what! Parasites in the Pentagon what they think! The army is stuck in Afghanistan! Efficiency is zero! Only loss!
