There are three bills currently being heard in the Texas legislature that would ban out-of-school suspensions for Pre-K through 2nd Grade. It’s part of a larger effort to disrupt the School-to-Prison Pipeline.
Punitive discipline has a disproportionate effect on black and Latino students. This bill seeks to keep those students in the classroom, which is part of a larger effort to end the School to Prison Pipeline. This VICE News stream explains some of the key research behind this movement and talks to the key players involved.

"If we're not going to be able to suspend students, then we need to have alternative measures to deal with behavioral problems," a teacher in Austin told VICE News. WATCH NEXT on CULTURE here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oL2Jes2C3cnciIk.html

Schools claim to have a zero tolerance policy against bullying but that happens every day with no student suspensions. Yet, if a student smacks a teachers hand...automatic suspension. I smell hypocracy....

Then they wonder why the kid who got bullied his whole life just "randomly" shot up the school, definitely not the teachers fault for being unable to stop it before it reached that point and he helps himself.

DARKKISS That is a valid point. Violence is still wrong whoever you do it to. But keep in mind, if that kid is so blatant that he is willing to slap a teacher who is much bigger than him, (even if he doesn't fully comprehend his actions) its very reasonable to think that he could or has already gone after classmates.

Who the hell suspends a pre-k student? What's wrong with time-outs?
@SimplestUsername

Kids who are suspended are often exhibiting severe behavioral problems. How is a teacher suppose to give time out to a kid who refuses to adhere to the rules of timeout? I agree that suspension to a grade schooler is pretty ineffective. Not having to go to school for misbehaving is a Win-Win for a grade schooler. But you need to come up with an effective alternative before simply demonizing the standard and those who practice it.

They have to show the child from a young age that certain behaviors arent tolerated. I worked in a preschool and we NEVER sent a kid home for something minor. It had to be a serious thing. It's our last resort. First we try to discipline the child but if they won't listen we have to call the parents and let them take it from there as they see fit

Suspensions are completely counter productive to begin with. If a kid is unfit for the school, expel him, if he has a minor offense give him punishments on campus , but make sure he's still in class and learning. Taking kids out of school for crap like this only makes them fall behind, then feel stressed from being behind and want to quit.

silvernug When I was in middle school, the students would go to "in house" and many would brag about the people who watched them being nice. They were also allowed to get cafeteria good whenever they wanted, and some would run errands with the teacher. They also got excused from class because of it. It was basically taking a break for the whole day and getting a free grade.

I know this is different though it's a relatable topic

Look. I am a fairness advocate. But there is a problem with this kid to where he is being suspended three times. If you replaced suspensions with another type of penalty, how will this improve the kid's chances of getting out of trouble? Shouldn't you do things to where you only get one suspension (at most) and that is it?

Why has he been suspended the other two times? If he's been slapping teacher's hands for picking him up, maybe stop picking him up, and tell him to use his words. He's in Pre-K . Pre-K is where kids learn how to communicate effectively, and it looks like he hasn't been taught because they're too busy suspending him. And why is he being picked up by a teacher in the first place? Of he's in pre-k he's old enough to walk.

If a kid is hitting anyone CPS should immediately be involved. Call a social worker first to talk to the child, not the potentially abusive parent. If he hit his teacher THREE DIFFERENT TIMES, he's being either neglected or abused at home. I feel awful for these teachers.

What kind of mental gymnastics do you have to make to come to the conclusion that the correlation between kids being suspended and kids later going to jail is actually a direct causality? Troublemakers will get both, it's just pants-on-head stupid to think that suspending a child from school causes it to become a criminal later on.

I can only shake my head to this. What's with all these over-sensitive teachers? I worked with some pretty disturbed children, some who were in foster homes because they saw their parents OD for example, or kids who were refugees, or kids who saw their parents get killed in a car crash etc. What you need to do is listen to them to understand what they're thinking, you need to set clear limits and punish them adequately and you need to show them that they matter. If you do all those things you have a real chance of making a difference to any child's life.

nikada vise I'm sorry for your loss, that must have been very difficult and all the more credit to you for staying level-headed and for defending the vulnerable. What I was referring to was the fact system bans children who are having a hard time. Who knows what they're seeing and experiencing at home and by suspending them the schools aren't helping them, they're just giving up on them. I looked after a lot of troubled and damaged children, but I never gave up on one of them. Most of them just needed someone they could talk to. Before they were in my care a lot of them did have trouble with authority figures and with controlling their temper. But you're right, we had children who were also very gentle and quiet, but sometimes too quiet. Everyone responds differently to these situations, but that doesn't mean that we don't all need help to deal with things like this. The only children I couldn't stand were the ones who were spoiled and entitled brats who lied and deceived and manipulated. But these were never children from underprivileged backgrounds, it was the opposite. They were the ones with wealthy parents who were also entitled. One day a mother dropped off her child and while she was kissing him goodbye, right in front of me, told him "if she does anything to you, you tell me, right honey?" Is this the kind of people you were referring to? Because they're not trashy as such, just horrible people.

+nikada vise I'm going to asume that you are female for the purpose of this response. Feel free to correct me if that's not the case. Black American children now have a 70% chance of being raised by a single mother. Setting aside all moral arguments, being raised in a two parent household is the single biggest factor, by a country mile, in the success of any child, of any ethnicity. At no point in modern human history have children (irrespective of sex) been successfully raised to adulthood in the complete absence of one gender. Stating the following does not suggest that it is impossible for mothers to successfully raise a well adjusted son by themselves, but it is colossally ignorant to ignore the fact that males (just like females) look to their parents as positive role models and to suggest that a mother can teach a son every aspect of what it is to be a good man is frankly laughable. Most young men, failing to identify a male role model at home or in education (where male teachers have been almost entirely excluded by a system that sees them as default sex offender if they dare to express an interest in educating children) look to their peer group for models instead. Do you think gangs spring out of thin air solely on the basis of poverty? Imagine if I suggested that it was a good thing that men should be solely responsible for the raising and education of young women.

What if we try to teach kids? We teach them algebra, history, biology, languages etc. What if we teach kids social skills and ways to make behavioral change. Hire more students out of college with psychology degrees. Hire more social workers. Lets dedicate more classes, more time to life skills, social skills, etc. Just seems logical to me. A teacher might get two hours a day to teach math to a kid but a mental health specialist is only given an hour a week. Ridiculous.

I had a friend with super religious Christian parents. He got along with his other Christian friends who parents were also Christian. apparently they all bounded by their dislike of their parents. I'm not advocating noticing but maybe if Yu had someone to be miserable with, you'll at least be social.

But the issue isn't racial profiling alone. People need to understand that the answer cannot just be: "black kids get suspended 3x more than other races because black kids are just more bad" that argument implies that there is something inherently wrong with black children. There isn't. Black children are disproportionately facing issues that other races of children aren't facing especially at home. Suspension isn't going to address those issues; it only makes them worse. That's why more comprehensive discipline needs to be in place.

I didn't mean the teacher, I meant the parent! I was more scared of getting in trouble at school because of my parents when I was a kid. Radioactive the best part of this though I am sure is if this kid hit your kid you would be angry right?

How would you cure a physically violent child then? I dont see you bringing any ideas to the table, we can talk about how love and hugs will fix it, but murderers and abusers come from somewhere and this little kid going to grow up because he doesn't understand the social hierarchy of power and authority, if there are no repercussion for your actions you are living in a fantasy anarchist world. A physically violent person will understand physical punishment even better because that's what he deals with.
