The Infamous Star of Mississippi Basketball in Iraq: ROAM

Marshall Henderson had one of the most infamous runs in NCAA Basketball history, dominating the SEC with his three point shot at Ole Miss (while also running into trouble with coaches/opposing fans/the law/etc.)
Then he went undrafted, and fizzled out of the NBA's D-League. Now he's in the massive and convoluted international basketball pipeline, playing wherever he can. His latest stop: Naft Al-Janoob of the Iraqi Division I Basketball League in Basra, scene to some of the most vicious battles of the Iraqi War and a city that continues to experience its share of violence.
In the inaugural episode of our new series ROAM, we spent time with Marshall as he gets acclimated to his new surroundings.

In Argentina in the 70s there was a team G.E.L.P. that hired three US players, and managed to win back to back tournaments in an era dominated by another big team of Argentina, Obras Sanitarias. One of them, Clarence Metcalfe, is still considered as the best foreigner player ever to play in the Argentinean Basketball league. He was a point guard during a time that foreign players in the Argentine league were usually Centers. www.eldia.com/nota/2019-12-26-4-53-4-a-40-anos-de-un-bicampeon-sensacional-deportes

Great case study on why college players should get paid or at least be able to make money off their money. Henderson literally sold out arenas everywhere he went...I saw him play once and I'll never forget it. Shot the lights out.

+BucSappy In terms of revenue earned vs what their athletes cost them, the NCAA has to be the most exploitative business in the country. It's absurd that they've been able to get away with that business model for so long.

+BucSappy "Henderson literally sold out arenas everywhere he went" This is such bullshit. Most of the games Ole Miss played his senior year were not sold out. No one outside of Ole Miss gave two shits about Henderson other than for his antics on and off the court. He was an overrated player who had a handful of really good games but ultimately shot below average percentages and wasn't even the best player on his team. The cost of the scholarship along with the free coaching, individual training, and publicity to pro-scouts is priceless and most people could only dream of receiving such benefits. If college players were paid it would destroy the college game completely as only the top schools could afford to pay a full team of players along with the coaches, travel fees, etc.
