The Education Crisis Crippling Dominican Baseball Players

Over the last few decades, the Dominican Republic has changed the face of American baseball by churning out talented players whose humble beginnings have helped cultivate a unique passion for the game. That passion is often due to dire circumstances that drive all focus to the diamond instead of the classroom. The result is thousands of young Dominican men sacrificing their education and formative years for a 2% chance of making it to the big leagues.
We sent Jaimie Sanchez to Boca Chica, a small, rural town that is home to the MLB's training camps to visit Junior Noboa. Junior is the head of Latin American Affairs for the Arizona Diamondbacks and has helped develop a digital education program for their young players. We also see Boca Chica through the eyes of two players who were forced to adjust to life back home after their dreams of major league glory never became a reality.

0:31 The meaning of "heavy" in the DR is equivalent to "cool", it doesn't have a literal meaning there.

wrong translation at 0:33. "Eso es jevi jugar pelota" The word "jevi" which sounds like heavy in english doesn't mean the same as heavy and shouldn't be translated as heavy. It is a slang term for cool, fun, etc. Just like if translating from english we wouldn't translate the word "cool" as not cold and not warm. It would use it's equivalent and not direct translation.

As a former scout then cross checker for a certain MLB organization once I no longer played (after college, I didnt play pro) I was always bothered by the exploitation I saw in the DR and Venezuela especially. I love that the DBACKS prioritize a hs diploma. But I do wish that they would present college baseball as a viable option for the kids not quite ready for the grind of minor league baseball both talent wise and mentally. It's not all their fault, the NCAA is mostly to blame bc of their bullshit bylaws about what makes someone a professional. Therefore, a 17 year old who is not ready to sign a contract to come over to the minors but is in one of these organizations is ineligible to come over and play college baseball. Those 3 or 4 years of D1 baseball, 1 or 2 years of JUCO would allow them to develop just like an American player who was not pro ready at 18. TL;DR the NCAA is bullshit. Give these guys a chance to earn an education and possibly grow as a player.

Or how about minor league baseball even single A or independent leagues giving these kids from the Dominican Republic a chance. Even if the minor league pay is very low it still is better than becoming a delinquent . The minor leagues in the USA give a meal stipend and they will have an opportunity to improve their skills?

But at the end of the day, there are still only a very limited number of baseball slots. However, there are skilled technical professions and trades that pay well, and are crying for personnel.

What happens if a kid gets injuried while playing for the MLB academy teams? Who pays for possible surgery? If the answer is the kid is left to his own, then the DR govt. needs to step in and pass laws. It appears the former player, now barber, got injured while playing and the team just cut him!

The mlb should imply or apply the us drafting system in this country. So everyone who wants to make it to the major league baseball, should get a degree first in the US or in Dominican Republic, so if they fail to get drafted, they still have a degree with them.

This is sad. Its good to have dreams but athletic endeavors should never take priorities over education. The majority of baseball players never make it to the big leagues, therefore a lot of ppl that only played baseball in their lives are screwed in the future. One way ticket in transferring poverty to a new generation. God bless ppl like Junior

One of the comments earlier stated any player accepted to one of the DR farm teams is ineligible to play for a US university. However, high school students in the US are now eligible to get college credits along side their hs education-many graduate high school with collect credits. MLB should 1) ensure each player graduates from high school and 2) is offered the opportunity to also gain college credits and learn a technical trade.

Education? In Dominican Republic education means nothing. Salary is terrible even for the well educated. So necessity takes over education. Plenty of players won't make any pro teams even with all hard work because baseball doesn't care about your hard efforts. All the stars have to line up so you can be liked and signed for any team. Is a rough road and uncertain one

Krystal Mills. Go read some history books. Educate yourself before you comment about an issue it is way beyond your understanding. Also see the news reports before and after the earthquake that hit Haiti. DR was, and is the country that have helped Haiti the most, even though DR is a poor country. They study in DR, even without documents. The women give birth in DR hospitals. It has been like that for so many years that you won't be able to count. DR is a poor country. It was just a matter of time when they finally TRY to fix some of the immigration problems. Is it racism against Haitians? Not by far. Get the facts... ALL the facts. Then, make your comments.
