I'm from South Korea. It is still a rifle operated by the North Korean military, as several South Koreans wrote below. It was introduced in North Korea in 1958, and personally, the AK family seems to be a masterpiece for good beyond the ages. Even now, the North Korean military is confronting South Korea's K2 rifle at the border and DMZ with that gun.

Served in ROKArmy 12th Mountain Div Special Recon. We used to be deployed in these bunkers called ‘GP’ located inside the DMZ itself, serving as the frontline sentinels. Before every deployment recons go through training sessions, and that was the moment i got my hands on these 58AKs (58식 자동보총). Since South Korea is a NATO affiliated nation, every single soldiers are familiar with 5.56 rounds, so that was the only moment that few of us got to experience the kick and firepower of the 7.62 I remember some of my squadmates saying “can our plates even block these?” since it was nothing like the smallarms in our arsenal

crooklynsince1983 Yes indeed. It was called Type74 Battalion Machinegun. Can be both belt-fed or mag-fed that goes on top of the receiver. The standard issue SAW we use were K-3 LMG, which is basically a licensed copy of American M249. And trust me, it jams like bitch and overheats like hell. While Type74 didn’t have any jamming issues while I squeezed down the trigger for full 50 rounds. I can confidently say that these North Korean firearms, they are old in design but they are reliable. Soviet weapon designs are no joke

Vietnam bring back, huh. "Never been fired and only been dropped once" A quote from Full Metal Jacket. I have fond memories of the AK. It brings me back to the Army days. In Afghanistan, our boys that were issued with Beryl (a Polish 5.56mm NATO version of AK) actually started going back to AK's in 7,62 M43. But that says very little. We were Mechanised Infantry even people as dumb as we could not break an AK in 7,62. Another example of "they don't make them like they used to."

This is a milled receiver which makes it heavier than a stamped metal receiver AK. The extra weight makes handling recoil easier. That's just one thing though. Modern AKs have an improved muzzle brake/flash hider hybrid device which dissipate spent gas in such a way that it significantly reduces horizontal and vertical recoil.

North Korea was closer to the Soviets than China by the 60s. Which is why their over-dependent economy collapsed when the Soviets did.

Johny Ricco if I recall correctly, the Russians goaded the DPRK to attack the south. DPRK thought Russia was going to back them all the way. Which didn’t quite work out. Ultimately it was the PRC that had to save the Kim’s.

@@John1911 The country was created by Stalin so they were always tight with the Soviets. They were only closer to China for awhile during the 50s due to their role in the Korean War.
