Thank you to Vicki Explores’ Patreons for sending me to Coventry (!)
There is so much to see and do in Coventry - this video is just the tip of the iceberg.
NB: I can’t find anything to confirm Allan’s suggestion that the weather vane on Trinity Church is a time capsule - but I loved the idea of it, so thought I would put it in the video for you to chat about in the comments.
The meaning of the phrase 'sent to Coventry' is hard to pin down. The book I refer to in the video describes it as: "The true origins of the phrase 'sent to Coventry' lie in the city's past as a garrison city when soldiers stayed in inns, got drink, got girls pregnant, got into fights and even occasionally killed people. During this time, before the buildings of the barracks in 1792, the saying is actually recorded and locals, especially girls, would not fraternise with the soldiers". (A-Z of Coventry: Places, People, History. D. McGrory.)

I love the modern cathedral... you enter in darkness but when you turn at the altar all of the the stain glass widows come into view at once and it feels like a blast of spiritual light. Great vlog. There is a haunting photo of the morning after the raid with people climbing over the rubble to get to work and of course it led to a terrible revenge. War is unthinkable :( and it is good that the older cathedral reminds us of this.

Thank you Vicki, you did my city proud. Every time I go into the Guild Hall it amazes me that it survived the air raid being so close to the cathedral. Ian Joyce Thanks Ian 👍 I was thinking the same thing about the Guildhall. I wonder if they had people stationed to protect it - like Trinity Church where the Reverend and two others kept watch all night (and even threw some incendiary bombs off the roof as they feel) to protect it?

The guildhall did not survive the blitz, because, like the cathedral, it was hit with incendiary bombs, which also led to the roof collapsing on the structure. Also, the original 'caesers tower' part of the guildhall. (Which historians believe was an only surviving part of Coventry castle) was so destroyed by a near by explosive bomb. The guildhall being extensively, and painstakingly repaired and renovated after the war ended.

One of the other origin stories I've heard for "sending to Coventry" was that of Peeping Tom, who looked at Lady Godiva as she rode naked through Coventry and was variously killed, struck blind, blinded by the townsfolk, or ostracised - depending on which version of the story you're told.
@mittfh
@mittfh 4 жыл бұрын
The tale of Peeping Tom first appeared a couple of hundred years after the main legend, so was almost certainly a later addition. In turn, the first recorded mention of the main legend was several hundred years after the alleged events took place. Leofric and Godiva were real people though, and founded Coventry's other Cathedral - its first, sandwiched between the other two and Holy Trinity, razed almost to foundation level (a couple of metres below the surrounding current ground level).
@gibbonduder182
@gibbonduder182 4 жыл бұрын
The origin of being sent to Coventry comes from the man who founded the city, Cofa. He had quite the specific way of dealing with his enemies. If you'd been sent to Cofa's tree, you were being executed (hung by the neck), this is why being sent to Coventry means you don't talk to someone.

During the first all the stations they had an hour to wait whilst at Hinckley. Whilst I assume Geoff went looking for tea, Vicki went for her first exploring.

0:48 I've never visited Coventry but having watched this video and read some of the comments, I can safely say that this sign sums up the city. That a city as old as Coventry has space for an "IKEA Plaza" in its centre goes to show how much of the city was destroyed.
