Vicki is really suited for this role but i still cant get over the fact that it strayed so much from the animation lol cus it had more humor and less violence of war o.o

It was a great movie. Havnt seen a good movie like this for a long time. Not only movie but in this movie there were alot of quotes which i really loved .. and i wonder why this movie is not a hit?

I don't think we can tell whether it's a true story or not as her name does not appear in historical records, but we do have a ballad written in the ancient time called 木蘭詩 or 木蘭辭 (both titles are commonly seen) telling Mulan's story, and her surname has been discussed a lot in ancient China. In some dynasties her surname was said to be 魏 (Wei) and in others she has other surnames. It was until the 18th or 19th century that she was given the surname 花(Hua).

I loved the disney version of mulan and I came across this version. I will never be able to watch Disneys Mulan again, not after watching this movie.

Actually, it's not a true story as there are no proof to state that it is, but it may be based on one - or several - real stories. The poem is vague about the entirety of the Mulan Story b/c of length but did not really hint that she was ever "discovered". Hua, though, is not an ancient Chinese surname and there are speculations on whether Mulan fought on the Chinese side or on the invaders side. Unlike the Disney version, in the poem, Mulan could sew and it never hinted that she was a tomboy

I didn't have enough room to comment more on the poem. But, it is not impossible (and actually quite likely) that many women disguised themselves as men to fight in wars, as China has a long history of wars. I would not be surprised if it were based on real stories, but I would be surprised if it wasn't a bit of historical fiction. Her supposed surname just doesn't match up with the side she was supposed to be on at the time of the conflict.

@DuruCreatives Maybe you are looking for propaganda where this is none. For instance, in movies about the Roman Empire the Germanic tribes are almost always depicted as being barbaric. It wasnt 100% true but it also was not false. Plus, there has to be an antagonist to make the story meaningful. In a historical sense the mongols were pretty territorial and constantly choose war instead of diplomacy.

To me the Disney version implicitly implied that Mulan's interests were not feminine. I'm offended that the animators thought that Mulan couldn't be good at warfare while possessing grace and "womanly" skills that women of her time were expected to be good at (the opposite of what the poem implied). I think the Disney version does make her a tomboy, the most popular version that Western culture knows her for. If it was offensive, that was not what I was going for.

the story's like the cartoon's?

Do not say "tomboy"--it implies that you think that interests/hobbies/enjoyed activities are a determining factor in femininity/masculinity, which they are not.

lol vicki zhao has pretty much typecast herself into these roles now. not a big fan of her to be honest, but my little cousin thinks she's the sun and the moon.

that what i was thinking.. of all those war in ancient china is very likely a few woman dress up as men and enter the army. But becoming a general.. is pretty unlikely. If you watch a lot of kung fu flick like me.. there always sum chick with super awesome martial art that kick a bunch of guy ass.. so this movie didn't really stand out for me.
