May 2, 2017 performance in the Chapel of St. Basil of the Easter sequence "Victimae Paschali Laudes" by the University of St. Thomas Schola Cantorum, led by Michael S. Richardson.
The polyphonic portion involves the women singing the main chant and the men drawing out each note of the opening melody for the words "Victimae paschali laudes immolent Christiani" in a manner akin to the drawn-out tenor lines in the Notre Dame school of polyphony that flourished from the 12th to 13th c. in Paris.
In the liturgical music of the Notre Dame school of polyphony, the tenor part would hold each note of the original Gregorian Chant melody for varying lengths while 1 to even 3 additional parts would sing vocal embellishments and independent melodic lines above.
