I think he wasted too much energy on the match before. He played amazingly then, and seemed to start this match without a full tank.

Viktor Axelsen in this game is similar to Lin Dan 2013, extremely patient but can be aggressive if necessary. Rather than attacking all out he chose to attack at the right spot, great strategy.

Amazing match between Kento and Viktor. I think this is the best performance from Kento in 2021, fighting back from 7-14 to 15-14 is really great to see.

Nobody have answers for victors cross court and straight smashes.i dont see momoto or anybody beating him unless someone comes with his height,physic and skills to this game.victor is completely different player than he used to be.

Normally after winning the finals, Viktor would celebrate in style, but for this one, he congratulated Kento before celebrating, it shows the huge respect Viktor have for one who was once the very best before the car crash who still made it to the finals

This really looked like Momota coming back fully. You could really wonder. Momota suddenly started attacking in 2nd set at such a critical moment for Viktor's physical condition. What wouldve happened if Momota just destroyed him there fully with long grueling rallies

This has been the most patient game I’ve seen from Axelsen. I believe that Axelsen really planned it out to play long rallies every point to tire Momota out so Axelsen’s smashes can be more effectively used later on.

and the irony is that everyone expected viktor to be the one who gets tired? maybe because of the accident that affected him but anyway we'll see if momota has better stamina next time when he gets to train.

I really enjoy Momota - He is my favorite of the current crop for many reasons, but even Viktor got COVID and he also had an ankle injury last year. Point of the fact is: Viktor has won 64 out of his last 66 matches, and he is recently undefeated against Yuqi, Zee Jia and now Kento too. While Momota played really well, to the other commentators mentioning he was unlucky to lose the 2nd game - Remember, Momota was also trailing 14-7 in the first game and can be said to be lucky to win it by the same logic. Additionally, Viktor is getting more confident and continuing to improve: His defense here is better than in their previous meetings. Also, his composure in the important points is strong, specially when he is under physical strain. In conclusion: Viktor is in a league of his own right now.

What a war of attrition! Simply, the fitter player outlasted the less fit one today. When Momota was on-song, he was the better player, but Axelsen had the stamina to implement his plan deeper into the game and Momota just didn't have the engine to reply. Super game!

momota's over confidence in his fitness could be the cause of his defeat, he should had victor wear down in 2nd set and should have kept some energy for 3rd set, but this also proves Victor has improved his fitness immensely in last 12 months, fitness will define the future course of conflicts between these two gentlemen.

Victor is strong opponent and he get many support from circumsentence in stadium, so Momota must force every ball and didn't give chance to Victor to develop his game. Good strategy from momota, but unfortunately his sight in second game give free point for Victor

We can only hope.... his ranking is quite low so he likely can't join super 750 or higher lvl. One thing is for sure he won't be joining any tournament anymore this year, next year's january has India Open and Malaysia Open which are both super 750 and 1000, he won't appear there, I believe there is one super 500 or 300 in january so he might appear there. I very much doubt he'll qualify for the olympics in time for july

I see how players today breach Kento's defense easily, attacking and scoring points at will. That comes from the lack of quality of clears from Kento, perhaps. I am an armchair expert on the game and don't qualify to comment, but I can speculate. And I believe Kento's clear-hitting strategy is so transparent these days that players read it like an open book. So, their attack, coupled with Kento's weakened defense game, helps them win. An obvious contrast: this game and the Malaysia Open 2022 final. What a difference in mentality, gameplay, and dominance among other things!

Viktor Axelsen always struggled when he met Momota and seemed to be psychologically inhibited, playing below his ability but this match Vik broke the psychological barrier. I believe, if Vik vs Momota again, it will be much easier to play.

Although Momota has not reached his 100% performance and stamina and lost the match, but it seems we can see Axelsen is his very favorite opponent. He seems feel more comfortable when defense and play Axelsen than other top players. For Axelsen, obviously he has improved his physical and mental stamina.

That tournament is the one that makes me think Momota can definitely get back to his former form. Came back from the accident and still managed to produce this kind of level, but lost confidence after that loss.

Axelsen this year actually improved a lot on every ralley especially keeping patent following Momotar. This stratery is very useful when he is better smashing than Momota.

viktor shouldve taken that in 2 sets..im really glad he won. I didnt like the commentators comments in the first and second set..saying his getting tired blablabla...viktor really showed he managed mentally and physically as well... that was an amazing performance of the highest level from both players

Axelson is a beast. True no 1 and the best player right now. His smashes are so lethal. Mamota also doing grt. But he is not par with Axelson. Fanboys don't bring the crap out. Mamota needs more than this to beat improved Axelson. I am really happy unlike Yufei , Axelson lived up to his Olympic gold medal.

A long sigh for KM. When he was sitting besides the court after the end, what was he thinking? His eyes seems to tell a sense of emptiness after such a long match with so many long rallies. He did his best and then silence.

Axelsen clearly have a height advantage over other players, he works hard but his height helps 40% of all the work .

Momota is near 100%, had flashes of brilliance and implemented his game strategy well, but he made too many line judgment errors and imo should have continued those rallies instead of letting the shuttle drop back in. The other thing is, Axelsen, though visibly tired, got 2nd and 3rd winds from his home crowd. Momota also got tired too which we saw in some of his shots. To his credit, Axelsen mustered up all his energy to attack as much as possible, while Momota never took those explosive steps to attack when Axelsen lifted to him. That is the difference in the 3rd game, when it really should have been 2 games won by Momota, had he played more agressively.

It was a few misjudgements from Kenta in 2nd set that turned the results. Loved the game though. The third set was purely in Viktors control, no doubt. Well done.

Well done Axelson for staying in the game and taking your chance when it came. Momota clearly had him struggling in the 2nd set. Don't know why he started guessing shots were going out. His strategy should have been to keep the shuttle in play and continue with the long rallies. Anyway the better player overall won today.
