Hey mate, great video! I was 8 years old when I got my first Swiss army knife. My grandfather and I were sitting at the dining room table on a Friday afternoon after the last day of school before the Summer holidays. I was going fishing for the first time the next morning and my granddad was putting a fishing tackle box together for me and showing how to tie hooks and rig up floats. I'd tied a few hooks as my granddad had showed me but was struggling to bite off the excess line (just like he did). I was about to get a pair of scissors to make the job easier when he stopped me, reached into his pocket and gave me his own pocket knife. I remember him saying, 'this is yours to keep on the condition that it stays in your fishing tackle box when you not using it'. He spent the rest of the afternoon showing me how to use that Swiss army knife. I can remember asking when I'd be allowed to carry it around in my pocket and he told me 'when you get to big school' (that's secondary school in the UK at about age 11). My grandfather went to the Lord in '93 when I was 10 years old. I did carry my pocket knife for the first year or so of secondary school but then the law got really strict on people carrying knives and I was worried that it'd get confiscated so I put it away in my room. I still have that Swiss army knife but its too precious to me to go taking it out of the house. I now carry a (horribly worn) Spartan and am looking for an upgrade. This Hiker looks nice. Thanks for the overview.

I have had several Swiss Army knives as a kid. That’s just a great starter knife for kids. Although I had a lot of them, all those I had in my youth were lost: bottom of a lake, bottom of a sand pile, who know all the places I lost them. Great video review.

If I lost my swiss champ id be DEVASTATED!!! was a leatherman hothead for many a year, and always thought that swiss army knives were cute little childrens toys. Picked one up out of curiosity, and never went back. Although I loved my leatherman tools, I believe that the swiss army knife is a superior tool for outdoors and urban enviroments. It doesnt turn heads, which is nice, and provides tools with HUNDREDS of uses. For instance lets look at the corkscrew. The corkscrew has about 50 different things you can use it for!, thus its not a corkscrew, its a macgyver corkscrew. Every tool can be used with your imagination if you need a task done. With a leatherman, its more of a toolbox with tools, which is nice. But if you want to get imaginative,... Well lets say the most imaginative tool on the leathermans is the awl.... So with that said I performed a sort of personal test to see which is more useful. I carried a leatherman and carried my swiss champ with me for a week. I can tell you right away that the leatherman just stayed on the belt. While the SAK knife was used pretty much everyday. Everyday I was presented with some simple amd complex task, only to think, "Hey this parcel hook will do the job!" And thus it did. The leatherman saw limited use because it does not offer a wide variety of seemingly "worthless" tools. But these "worthless" tools seem to offer a much versatile usage platform. If you wamt something that offers a toolset for everyday life, get the swiss! If you are working on nuts and bolts all day..... Carry BOTH.! And leatherman fanboys, I know many of you would scoff at aomeone if they said that the swiss army is more useful, but go to the store and buy one. Use it and see what I'm talking about. Its a great tool with a great history.

Hey dude nice little review as I've just Purchased this knife 👍 but what really got my attention is what you had to say, I'm 55 and had my first penknife when I was 9 a small pearl handle one and over the years have had many , was 20 before I had my first Swiss arm knife , and was in my 30s when I got a leatherman wave , super cool multi tool . And as I live in England I can relate to what you said about knifes being taboo , as we have some of the strictest laws on knifes anywhere in the world, I find it quite sad , I've carried a knife since I was nine for all the reasons that Boy Scouts and would be macgyvers and never have I even considered using it as a weapon, I guess that's the world we live in now but I for one will always carry my little friend with me , nice to hear some that feels the same stay well everyday guy 😎👍

yeah man, im from England too and as a 15-year-old, I'm not even allowed to carry a knife on my person. My dad bought me a Victorinox hiker as a gift because i needed some kind of blade for my crafts, and the 12 other components were just a cool bonus. but i later found out i could only use it at home, which sucked because most of the components are even sharp.

I've carried a Hiker for the past ten years . Use it almost every day . The saw blade is bent but still works . So far today I used the screwdriver to clean the mud off my boots . The saw to cut some roots . The knife to cut open some steaks and some loose threads from a shirt . And the toothpick which is the function I use the most . I have dozens of pocket knives but dont carry them anymore .
@RustyGunn74 жыл бұрын
I found my first Swiss Army knife, but lost it a few months later. I had another, simular to this Hiker model, but misplaced it in my home, put away in storage. I'd like to purchase this Hiker model, as it has the exact tools I favor in such a knife. BTW I bought my first few pocket knives when I was a little boy, some 50 years ago, for a whopping 75 cents each! My favorite was a pearl handled double bladed knife, brand unknown to me now, but I lost it about ten years later. No one ever says anything if one carries a knife up here in Kotzebue Alaska. Its almost frowned upon if you don't have one. I EDC a pocket knife still. Nice reviw, I like this Hiker model a lot. Thanks for sharing.

I was around 10 or so when I got my first SAK. I have several more now. I carry daily the Trekker and Tinker along with a fixed blade and forest axe. I work in a nature preserve and have need of such tools. I believe every kid should learn knife safety. Plus there are fun arts such as whittling that are right up a SAK alley! SAK knives have there place in the great outdoors. Use the Right tool for the job. Thanks for the great review.

My first SAK was an 84mm Recruit. I must have been 10 or 11 and that was back in the 80’s. And yes, you’re right, people didn’t bat an eye if a mature kid had a pocket knife. The most I got from my parents was “Be careful and have fun.”

I got my first Swiss army knife when I was six because I was fascinated with pocket knives after seeing my dad and grandfather with theirs. I closed it on my thumb the first week I had it and learned an Important lesson in knife safety but that was the only injury I ever caused myself with it, the rest of that summer I was using that knife for everything I could. I'll always be grateful that my dad taught me how to use a knife proper and let me learn with one so young, I think nowadays no one would allow a six year old a swiss knife.

I carry the Fieldmaster, which is exactly like the Hiker, but with the addition of scissors and the parcel hook. Well, and also with the addition of a higher price tag. II also had a Hiker, but gave it to one of my sons. My primary pocketknife is a Case XX Amber Bone CV Jumbo Stockman because it's a much better carving knife, and a much better knife for hunting and trapping. The Fieldmaster/Hiker, though, is a great addition to my primary knife, and I use it pretty much every day. In the woods, the saw and the awl are so useful that doing without them makes life a lot harder. Anyway, I was seven when I got my first pocketknife. It was a Barlow. I had friends who got their first knife as early as five. Things were vastly different when I was young. We were allowed to carry pocketknives in grade high, school, and the teachers came out during recess and played mumblety-peg with us. In jr. high, seventh and eighth grades, the ag department had a hunting contest each year, and gave awy a rifle and a shotgun to the winners. We were allowed to carry them from class to class to show the off, and then took them home on the school bus. I blame city living for most of the change. For the first time in history, we're at the point where more people will be living in cities than in the country.

I bought a Swiss multi tool spirit for all the normal around the house mundane tasks. Now on the lookout for a pocket folder knife and was suggested the rucksack or forester. Knife laws are harsh here thus having a swiss army knife will make life less complicated. Is the delemot evo grip too big ?? or should I settle for a hiker or camper. My current city slicker lifestyle doesn't give much opportunity for whittling or chopping but I would love to have a rather sturdy knife at least for a keepsake but something rather small and unimposing so looking towards the SAK.
