Victorinox recently came out with the package opener tool for the Swiss army knife. It's available now on the 2023 Swiss Spirit knife, called the Companion. The package opener tool on the Companion looks fantastic - but can it hold a candle to the tools Victorinox lovers have considered "package openers" for years?

Thanks, David! I appreciate your comment. 😀 It is actually pretty cool, and honestly , I would replace the can opener on my Swiss champ with it if I could. And I also would replace my small blade with the nail file if I could. I think. I actually think I need a new layer with both of those tools... in for a penny, in for a pound!! Also, I'd add a pruning blade... man this knife is getting big...

Hi Anne, once again, a nice video. My personal recommendation for opening packages is still the blade. Exept for the hard plastic clamshell packaging. I used to use the pruning blade for those but I've had my share of "near misses" just like you in the video so for that the new package opener tool is a much safer option and I think it really excels in that role.

Interesting comparison - thx for showing. Rule #1 for knife security: NEVER cut towards you, ALWAYS cut away from you. Especially plastic packaging is molded, so it's not of even thickness all around, that makes it unpredictable. To my experience, the best way to deal with the clamshell packaging is the blade (preferably the small one) in the chestgrip. At home I always use heavy duty scissors or tin snips on them.

I grinded (wrong word?) a hook blade on the inside of the can opener, like you said, and it's literally one of the best things about the sak now. I strongly recommend it if you have a dremel, it doesn't take away the can opening functions of the blade, but adds so much more potential. You just need one sanding drum attachment for the dremel, that's all

I think one important thing tpeople (who haven't made the excperience themselves yet) can also learn from your tries is "always cut away from your own hands". Please stay safe, you don't need to risk injuries to provide us with informative and fun videos! While i have used the can opener for many things, i never tried to open packages with it. But i would have pushed to cut with the round part that is supposed to cut the cans instead of pulling. Otherwise you would need to sharpen the inside with a diamond file or simliar item to get in there.

Try this with the pruner blade: push with your thumb on the spine of the blade till the tip of the blade goes through the plastic. Then a gentle draw cut. Nice review. Thanks for taking the time to do this review. Tip for sharpening the can opener to make it work. Use a chain saw sharpener. It creates a sharp edge with a "hook" shape that "follows" plastic packaging contours safely with decent results. I use it on box tape as well, when I don't have my box cutter close by. I don't like to gum up my blades with tape glue. I don't care about the can opener getting gummy. I have only used it for opening cans to see how well it works. Lol.

@@thevineclimber I was skeptical at first, but loved the but driver part of it. I fell out of using it as much once I really realized how much I needed a good pair of scissors on a tool, so it came out of the pocket and went into my on-the-go repair pouch. But when my wife blew a radiator hose, I was able to open these thing to their MAX, and then because of the gear assistance, squeeze hose clamps (a ridiculous tough task even with a full size multitool), open and closed to repair it in a parking lot! The same weekend I used the same plyers to bust loose a bunch of rusted nuts and bolts on old beater bikes from the flea market to fit them in the car! Needless to say, I went from liking this, to ensuring it's accessible whenever I leave the house. The PowerPint's power features for me are indeed the bit driver, the widest opening pliers, and the only serated blade I have (not counting my stay-at-home Workchamp XL). I keep it in the car next to SwissChamp and Nextool Captain. The smaller-than-Victorinox phillips and flathead might come in handy some day, but so far hasn't. Millimeter measurements are handy. If the protractor had 20 degrees, I could use it to sharpen knives ... but it doesn't. Can opener and scissors work but are kind of a joke. I have the same love-hate relationship with this tool. It opens too easily. I had to put a small magnet in between legs to keep it closed. I got it before the Nextool Captain, and now not even sure I even need it anymore. /long rant over Keep up the great work y'all

Just a friendly tip, because I care. Always try to cut things away from your body, not towards your body. I learned this from an old timer a long time ago. Sometimes you just can’t, but always try to cut away from you, because of less chance of stabbing your other hand or your stomach if you have momentum behind it. Hi, thank you for the comparison! I love your vids on SAKs, showing your PERSONAL experience with them. I believe many people need this to see a full picture, advantages and disadvantages of different tools on SAKs. I think the situation with a lack of package opening tools on SAKs is a really important topic for many when considering to buy a SAK. For me, I daily carry a SwissChamp, and I frequently get packages wrapped with plastic mailers like you showed (4:30). My packages get delivered to a delivery point, so not to my home. And I need to check it basically in front of the delivery point worker. Using a stationery knife from this delivery point is not an option (well, everyone uses it, microbes.. etc.). Using a small blade on SwissChamp is an option, BUT as you have shown (7:30, great slowmo btw haha) getting a cut in front of a delivery worker is the last thing I want! To add to that, pulling out a blade in this situation attracts a lot of attention I have noticed. Browsing online I saw a vid from Felix Immler titled "The Hook Blade Trick - Swiss Army Knife modification...". He MODIFIES his can opener to create a sharp semicircular cutout (where you have tried to sharpen) using dremel. I HAVE all the required tools, and literally yesterday I modified my SwissChamp. I have not yet tried it on any real packaging for a lack if one at home (and sadly i don't have an unopened SOG powerpint either haha). But testing it on random plastic and boxes at home showed that it works great so far. BUT, this is definitely not an ultimate solution. First of all, many people struggle with sharpening their knives, let alone moding them. And the tools you would need are not the cheapest to get them just for that mod. Secondly, even though I tried to be careful, I have still made a number of scratches, and the original finished look of Victorinox is lost. I think it would be great to have this kind of package opener out of the box like on the new 2023 edition SAK. In any form: independent or integrated in an existing tool (e.g. can opener tool). A much needed tool!

Wow, what a great comment! You have said so many things I have been wondering about. First, I appreciate that you carry a Swiss champ daily. (This is the new symbol on YT to mean we both love Swiss army knives: ) Second, I appreciate that you have felt uncomfortable or attracted unwanted attention, even with a small blade. Although, I guess we could both use our scissors on this. LOL!! Third, I have seen that video and I would really like to do that, but (fourth) as you stated it can kind of scratch up your tool. Girl, girl... most of those tasks are easily done with a good sharp blade, like in any ordinary utility knife. Taking Victorinox tools, particularly the pruner blade is well situated.I like Vic dearly, but such a specialized tool like this 2023 package opener is safe as milk, like Capt. Beefheart would say....

Oh yes, absoluitely! A knife can do all of those things, and many more! And yet, I'll still say that the package opener tool is a welcome addition for people who may be around knife-intolerant folks, and it will be really great for people like me, who work in knife-impermissive environments, if they put it into a knifeless model. (I think I made up that word.) I have yet to convince myself to EDC the companion, because I love my Swiss Champ too much, but I could see it being very appreciated at work... Nice work. I bet I know were the new one, the Swiss Spirit Companion, would beat the rest: package straps. You know those (often yellow) plastic straps around really heavy boxes? Here's where its serrations would allow some sawing action, which could come in handy. Serrations are also great for fabrics (like an emergency safety belt cutter, also to remove clothing from a crash victim without fear your main knife may slip and stab them [boy do they hate that], or rope.

great video! I actually really like the package opener on the Swiss Spirit 2023. The small triangular part cuts through plastic with ease, the serrated part makes short work of cardboard. Keeps you from having to dull or gum up your knife blades with opening packages. My wife likes it too because she finds it safer than using a blade. Having said that, there is one type of box for which I use the sturdy cap lifter/screwdriver on my Work Champ or Pioneer X and that is cardboard boxes with glued down flaps. The cap lifter makes a great opener in that case to be used as a pry bar to pry up the flaps. I know the Swiss Spirit 2023 is a collector's special edition but I use all my special edition knives rather than just collect them.
@thevineclimber
@thevineclimber Жыл бұрын
Cool! I think it is a good addition - not for everyone all the time, but definitely for some people in some situations, at least. And the possibilities of a bladeless multitool with this... I am really happy to hear that your wife likes this tool. I personally think that women will possibly like it more than men do, and I don't know why. I like to use my knives, but before I was comfortable with knives, I would probably have preferred this tool. It just makes sense - why use a knife when you could use something that apparently does not need to be sharpened (much) and has a much lower chance of cutting you or the product inside the box?? It's interesting that you were talking about cardboard boxes with glued down flaps. I just had to open a box like that the other day, and the glue was not too strong so I used the fish scaler on my Swiss champ. It worked great and I felt, of course, like a genius. But it would not have worked on stronger cardboard with thicker glue. This is a good tip! I love that you use your special editions! :) I am unsure of how to handle it, but I am happy someone uses them with abandon!
@gabithemagyar
@gabithemagyar Жыл бұрын
@@thevineclimber That is genius that you used the fish scaler ! I never thought of that. Guess I was just used to using the cap lifter as a pry bar on occasion (to remove staples, pry up lids on bottles etc. ). I may try the Swiss Champ fish scaler next time I open a box like that. :-) Regarding the special editions, I don't buy the really expensive ones like the 1897 replica, just things like Winter Magic, Swiss Spirit and Alox Pioneer X ones. I figure they are meant to be used. Long ago people used to decorate their daily use tools (and weapons) with carving, inlay and other methods. In some places, they still do. For example, I have a Hungarian walking ax (fokos) with a decorated head and horse herder's whip with inlaid handle. Nothing wrong with attractive tools :-)

@@thevineclimber I'm going to try and give you an idea. Ok, here it goes... The negative space of the can opener looks like an old-timey upper case J; the one that has an upper bar, right? Now, there are several ways you can cut a notch: 1. I'd simply cut an oblique notch with the file just barely passing the hook of the J - like so: /J (my ascii art leaves to be desired, but I hope you understand) This should give you a good presentation angle for the cutting edge and a nice little point to start a cut into e.g. clamshell packaging or for hooking under string etc. 2. If you want the notch parallel to the spine of the can opener and your chainsaw file doesn't fit within the J-hook, you can either first file a semicircle into the upper bar to make some room (maybe ductape the side of the file you don't need so you don't scratch up the inside of the can opener) and then cut the bevel, or you can start the bevel with a rather obtuse angle, slowly becoming more acute as you remove material until you've crept up on the edge bevel angle you want; which doesn't need to be that keen for clampacks, zip-ties etc anyway.

I normally use a small Spyderco knife on them, cutting very carefully into the plastic. Just today I tried the awl on my Pioneer X to open boxes. Happy Saturday Anne, thank you for another great video demonstration of the practical uses for various Victorinox tools. Since I don't own a Companion I can't compare its package tools cutting abilities with other models and I have never used the orange peeler tools on the executive & the mini-champ to cut open packaging or the can opener. As a rule I use the small pen blade on one of my SAK's to cut open any kind of packaging & in particular clam shell packaging and only occasionally will I use the pruning (harvester) blade on the Swiss Army 2 and 6 knives in my collection. If & when Victorinox releases a Companion with standard Cellidor plastic scales as part of its all year round line up I will probably buy one but they may not put the cutting tool on any other knives except for special editions & therefore expensive annual models as they did with the LED light (and in line Philips screwdriver) on the 2021 winter magic Climber Lite. If it were in plus scales, it would be so amazing. And yet... where is it?! A flashlight, pen, flat and Phillips screwdrivers, a large and small blade, a cap lifter, and some other tools which are less commonly used. Well, I try to use my corkscrew as much as possible, but still. Anyway, where is it? Why don't we have it? This was 2 years ago. So you are right; they may put this on fancy knives only. But we can hope. In fact, your comment makes me hope - maybe they will come out with a Companion Lite. That would be EPIC!!!

Hi Steve! I did not know that you had a Swiss Army 2. I want one, for reasons that escape me because I have a Swiss Army 6, but as usual, you are the person who normalizes my wish for more Swiss Army Knives. (I have stolen this emoji from the YT list and changed the meaning to be "we both love Swiss army knives.") I am worried that they will not put the new tool on other knives. I would like it on my Swiss champ, but I also want a nail file. I actually really like this new tool and the Companion, and if it were in plus cellidor scales, maybe it would become my out-of-the-house summer knife, like the Compact is my party knife. I think that the LED light on the Huntsman Lite is expensive, but it is nice. I got it on the recommendation of The Fossil Channel. It is my nighttime carry. I have resorted to making up events to carry different knives, apparently. Thank you very much for coming by and commenting!!

I thought it was just me doing that! It's ideal as it's small in relation to the handle so you get a controlled cut, and it's slicey af even when the initial edge is gone, due to it's geometry.

Alox Awl works best near tip - put finger along spine and control depth so only use end. The side the tool is on often indicates the best orientation to use it - packages often need the flattest side of the tool closest to the surface. Harvester works best if you cut AWAY from self
@thevineclimber
@thevineclimber Жыл бұрын
Lol I especially like your 2nd tip! So do my fingers! A lot of people have told me to put my finger on the awl, but I didn't understand until your comment! Thank you for explaining that. :) I'm going to give that another try but it obviously seems that it would give me better control. It's crazy to me how this test, which had nothing to do with the Harvester, has made the Harvester and even better knife in my mind!

Hoh boy, here I go again. Sure is tempting with the new Live to Explore lineup out now. I primary an outrider, but use a compact for basketball shorts and lighter wear and a custom for heavy duty tasks. Strongly considering the New York “companion” to replace the compact 🤔

Small blade (the actual pen knife) on any SAK opens most packaging, especially those cursed blister packs. It's much easier to control around the corners of package than the large blade.

Same here! I love the small blade and use it all the time!! So manageable. Lol I couldn't even resist using it for the video - it made a guest appearance with the Amazon bag. It is easy, but...
