If you're familiar with the Swiss Army Knife and Leatherman Tools, then you know that Victorinox makes a full-sized pliers-based multitool called the SwissTool. In this review I compare the SwissTool to the Leatherman Surge, the Wave, the Supertool 300, and the SAK Champ. I describe the functionality of tools and give my thoughts on whether I prefer Leatherman or Victorinox multitools. To support my channel buy stuff through my links below.

@@AdvancedKnifeBro I think it's mostly just what fits you most. Even with cars (supercars and special purpose aside) every standard car can match most of your transport needs. Some want a Mercedes because reasons, some like BMW, and others drive a camry and go to the same places and need the same time. The swisstool does everything I need if I don't have real tools, and I have more confidence in it since I used it heavily without anything giving up. I can't say that for all Leatherman I owned over the years. :-)
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 5 жыл бұрын
I agree mostly... but your comparison of one as a finely tuned luxury car and a cheaper family car is probably a little over the top. The spirit is smooth, the Swisstool is a little clunkier like the Wave. The Charge TTi is as smooth as the Spirit, but unecessary mostly. I also didn't bring it up much in the review but the one handed opening of the Leatherman Wave blade versus the fingernail bending opening of the swisstool knives... but again they're different tools. Different people value different things out of a tool.

@@AdvancedKnifeBro I thought about the victorinox as the merc, the Leatherman as the bnw, and more like a gerber as the camry - it works in most places as good, but maybe after 20 years you still use a merc or a BMW, but not the camry ;-(

The quality on the Swiss tool is unmatched. I had my SAK since 1985 and it is still going strong. When you open the tools of the Leatherman, having to open the pliers is annoying and then the rest of the tools bunch up. With the Swiss tool everything comes out smoothly and not interfering with any other adjacent tool. The craftsmanship is perfect on the Swiss tool!

The mini-pliers on Victorinox pocket knives is not a small version of a multi-tool pliers. It is light, close work, and even a super tweezer. Or power finger top. Hardly junk! In computer chassis and small enclosed mechanical or electrical devices they ate better then a clunky big MT pliers head. The Swiss Army SOLDIER KNIFE is officially used in a number of armies as a utility knife. Last year it went on the list of official procurable knives for US soldiers. Same as the Swiss model except oxide black coating and the letters 'US' on the scales. A number of armies have long experience with Victorinox knives. Utility pocket knives, bayonets, and multitools. Apples and orange! But otherwise A great review--thanks.
@totallyfrozen
@totallyfrozen 4 жыл бұрын
David Siegel There’s a lot of knives that are procurable by the military. When I was in the Army, the PX clothing sales sold everything from Victorinox Classics to lots of shitty Gerber knives. Soldiers buy their own knives and MT stuff (at a discount). The gub’ment doesn’t issue it. Yes, they even sold the Victorinox Classic SD with black scales and U.S. markings on it. So don’t read too much into that. Soldiers can buy and carry a lot of their own personal preferences.

@@totallyfrozen He doesn't mean available for private purchase in the PX/NAAFI or other shop. He means actually issued to all serving soldiers, and this is the case in the German and Swiss Armies amongst others with Victorinox.

Even Though i live in Switzerland i have neven seen anyone use a Victorinox Multi Tool, probably because it sucks, if you actually use the tool get a Leatherman.

I have a Wave as potato bag in my house A Surge as potato bag at my truck console A ST300 and Charge + G10 at my belt for work Finally a Swisstool and Pioneer X at my belt for casual ...... Swisstool is more for general use. General hybrid pliers and tools, the precision is magnificent and they do that second blade like they know you carry a primary one (which I do : Buck 110 G10 Slim Pro SV35N) And Leatherman for people in USA is the work horse, more practical and pliers are electrical dedicated. I prefer the Swisstool pliers for mechanical bolts but Leatherman for tradesman Both are great...... Choose whatever you like more....... Is not gerber or SOG to say is trash.... LOL

Hi from the UK. Really enjoyed the video. I purchased a Swiss Tool back in 1998 (no scissors included then). It is a superb piece of engineering. I have used it a lot over the decades and there is hardly a mark on it. It also came with a very high quality leather sheath, still in good condition today. I like Leatherman tools and own a few but the Swiss Tool has always been a firm favorite.

lol Leatherman can’t never beat Victorinox multitool. Leatherman and Victorinox both produce excellent multi-tools. But what are the differences between the two brands? Victorinox the finish is always good. Scales and tools are always nicely polished and all edges are nicely rounded. The adjustment of all moving parts is also great for almost all tools. This finish is the result of a special, secret process in the Victorinox factory. Not only does this feel great in hand, it also ensures that you rarely come across Victorinox multi-tools with rust stains. When you compare this to Leatherman you’ll see that different parts are often a little sharper along the edges. It also occurs that the tools are not as equally adjusted, or have a little more wiggle room. In addition,you come across rust stains a little more often on Leatherman multi-tools.Swiss quality against USA.Swiss- for one step up. Whichever of the two brands you decide to go with: both produce excellent tools.

The swiss tool X does everything with a PRESTIGE and refined look and feel, like a shiny DIAMOND with lots of BLING BLING, like in the movie blood diamond:) Polished at a jewelry store you will NOT want to REALLY use this SwiSS X:( Leatherman is a TIMEX and the Swiss TOOL a ROLEX! Every time the X tool comes out, people bow and stand back in AWE............carried EVERYDAY in a max pedition single magazine pouch custom fit is EXCELLENT :)

Thanks for posting all of the awesome and honest multi tool review videos - I watched them all, and read all of the comments (that took me a while!), and it helped me finally decide to get the black/silver Wave+ (rather than a Rebar, Charge, or one of the Victorinox multitools), as a gift for my friend, who might get a job either with the Coast Guard or a commercial sailing vessel. Now, I just have to decide which multitool I want to get for myself (it is between the Wave+, Surge, and Charge / Charge TTI), since I think it would be handy to have a versatile multitool on hand / in my toolbox, etc. to use around the house, in my car, on camping trips, etc. Maybe you could do a comparison video and highlight some more of the differences between those three/four? I know you prefer the Wave+, but it would be nice to see a really comprehensive, in-depth, side by side comparison/discussion of what seem to be some of the best of the Leathermans, and get some additional thoughts and recommendations.

Looking forward to it. I ordered my first Leatherman (Charge tti +) around the same time you posted your Wave review. I've been carrying it every day since & absolutely love it. I don't know if the Wave has this, but if you open the saw, there's a lanyard ring on the Charge tti +. I had to use a pocket screwdriver to slide it out (or use the tweaker™) The Wave looks very very similar to the Charge. Like you said, a used Wave on flebay goes for around $45. I could easily use the remaining $125 on a Spyderco and/or Grain Belt.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 5 жыл бұрын
The Wave does have that. I have never ever noticed it before you said something. The Wave and Charge are nearly the same in function, except the Charge has a modified serrated, an s30v main blade good for more cuts per shrapen, and a thicker more square plier handle.

Kinda makes the accessory lanyard ring that comes with the pocket clip seem a bit redundant. I've never handled a Wave. My first Leatherman was the Charge tti +. Got it a month or 2 ago. Bought it because of the materials. Just ordered a Juice S2 tonight. I can see how this can get addictive.

I don't agree with your negative comments on the pliers of the standard 91mm SAK. Their purpose is different to the one of the pliers-based SwissTool. The former is meant to be a pocket knife while the latter is a multitool. What each set of pliers can achieve is obviously not comparable and both have their limitations, but that's because they're different tools, not because one is simply “useless". Every tool has its limitations.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 5 жыл бұрын
Ok great. One person said that small pliers like the one on the SAK work well inside computer cases. I’ve never ever had a use for pliers that small. I generally use small bit drivers or sockets for those because it’s a better tool. And as far as your comments of a 91mm being a pocket knife and a Leatherman being a “multitool”... A pocket knife does not generally include pliers. We call that a multitool. And the 91mm SAK with pliers takes up nearly as much pocket room as a standard PST. Your experience apparently is those are useful pliers, but never in my life have I ever seen a person use a Swiss Army knife pair of pliers. Full size multitool pliers yes... often. I mean not as much as a real set of pliers.

Advanced Knife Bro : I see. Well, I own two Leatherman (Wave and Blast) as well as various 91mm and 111mm Victorinox knives with pliers. I’ve used either models countless times. The 911mm pliers can be useful for pulling things. Would you mind watching a short clip that exemplifies it?

Great review! Love all the objective points of comparison. I’m happy with my SwissTool RS, but I’m an occasional user at best. The large scissors are outstanding and very functional. The serrated “rescue” blade is nice to have. The ruler is surprisingly useful - very handy. The smaller SwissTool Spirit X looks nice, being smaller and with a more ergonomically designed handle. I’ll be interested if you ever review one. Unfortunately in eschewing the flat handles for the nice curved design, the Spirit loses that great ruler.

The SwissTool is more or less standard in Europe. Official danish designation is “M11”, and it was introduced in 2011/2012, though the original press release is no longer available on the military webpage. Here’s another article about it translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fkrigeren.dk%2Fnyt-multi-tool-erstatter-den-rode-foldekniv-i-haeren%2F It replaced the old model. Advanced Knife Bro the joke is fine with me, and the original M/92 was certainly in a completely other class than the current SwissTool. The old folding knife was probably more for personal grooming than actual field use. I own a SwissTool given to me by a danish soldier because he preferred his (personal) Leatherman Wave. They also have regular boot knives, the M/96 which is a modified Glock Feldmesser (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glock_knife) without a sharp edge, which basically just makes it a pointy piece of steel.

The swiss have a really good combo can/bottle opener that I'm pretty sure they have a patent on. You can find it on the victorinox compact. I don't know why they don't use it in their knives more often it's way better than having both the two knives and an extra layer on your multitool for no reason.

I find using the can opener on my swiss army knife is faster because I always have it in my pocket, so I don't have to go find something I never use and the can opener on the knife is also easier to clean. The only time I ever use a real can opener is if I have more than 2 cans I need to open, which is pretty much never.

Great vid. I agree the Surge for the big manly dude, the Wave for the smart old man like me who understands the use of a multi tool can never be as good as using the right single tool. One thing I noticed you didn't say, well maybe I didn't hear it because I dropped my hearing aid in the middle of the vid. The Leatherman tools can be taken apart, whereas the Swiss tools can not be taken apart readily. That means you are at the manufacturer's mercy. I changed my knife on my Wave from the 420 to a 30V steel. Found the 30V knife on Ebay at a great price and changed it. Can't do that with the Swiss tools. I, like you, need psyche help when it comes to multi tools. I don't have as many as you do, because I became addicted to Sig Sauer and H&K, so I am always broke. I have about 15 multitools. My favorite are Leatherman, followed by Swiss, followed by the real Schrade (American made) and lastly SOG.
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t take apart my multitools much- but that’s a good point. I’m a fan of the more comfortable handle on the Wave over the Charge- and that s30v blade in my mind is the only real advantage.

Carry a Wenger Soldier for the can opener mostly. Can open a can faster & cleaner. The one (or many) time one has to open a can made from inferior metal and leaves metal slivers to impale your fingers with you may understand the preference to a push-type can opener. Carry a modified Leatherman Charge TTi as well, as I needed an awl on board. Great multipurpose cutting for thing materials, like removed grips from bikes. replacing rubber on motorbikes, cutting other materials or boring holes through stuff that you should not be cutting with a normal blade with, and also great in repairing electrical sockets & fuses with. Awl is a fantastic tool for the person that wants or needs one. Problem with Leatherman is the only tool that covers all bases is the Surge, which weighs nearly a pound, and bends belts trying to EDC one. Way too heavy and bulky. Why Leatherman did not shrink the Surge down to a Charge or Wave size has perplexed me for many years. So every other tool Leatherman makes they leave out something. Every tool... Was debating about getting a Swiss Tool to EDC since am nearly fed up waiting for Leatherman to evolve, tool wise. Guess their idea is they can sell two tools to do what only one should. Have ordered spare Victorinox push-type can openers to see if I can fit one into the modified Charge TTi that I own. When I get the time, and if it works, I'll keep what I got. If not, and still temped, will get a Swiss Tool. Cannot find one tool that does it all with a decent warranty to boot. Modifying a tool to do what you want voids the warranty. So I carry a Wenger Soldier's knife & a Leatherman Charge TTi until I find an equinox multitool.

Bro, you forgot the corkscrew. The Swisstool (all of the versions) come with a little hole on either side into which a detachable corkscrew (sold separately) can be inserted and used to open up a yummy bottle of rose. You can order a gigantic sheath that has a special place for the corkscrew, but, otherwise, you'd have to carry a weird detachable tool loose in your pocket with your condom from 1985 and breath mints. The sheath is about the size of 4 Wave sheaths rubber banded together. Anyway, there you go....a "secret" tool on the Swisstool!
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 5 жыл бұрын
Oh. No. Not the. Corkscrew. Ha ha... I literally had no idea. I like the mini bit driver that also comes with some- that as far as I can tell you can't actually attach to it, and it's basically a separate tool. I may be wrong about that- I spend about 30 minutes trying to figure that out from pictures on Monday.
@pcarmical
@pcarmical 5 жыл бұрын
It's a huge pain in the ass, which is one of the reasons why I usually fall back to a Leatherman for the pliers and a SAK for the "socializing" tools (you know, the toothpick, tweezers, and scissors for when you're at a cocktail party and have to run to the bathroom for an emergency grooming moment) and the corkscrew and bottle opener (for when you're at a Superbowl party with a lot of chicks who want wine and yet the host has no fucking corkscrew). But it's cool to have and even cooler when you know about it. Kind of like the little hole behind the corkscrew in some SAKs where you can store a pin. You know....for sticking shit.

Do multi-tool reviews also reduce the JPM (jokes per minuted) rate or is that just me? I agree that it's serious business though. Knives, lights, and beer are fun, but multi-tools are for actually getting shit done. You should check out the SOG powerlock. I had the original powerplier for over 20years before it finally couldn't take the abusive relationship any longer and broke down. I sent some pieces of it back to SOG and then sent me a brand new powerlock as a warranty (lifetime) replacement. If what you do the most with your plier-based multi-tool is "pliering things" then this is far and away the best that I've used. If SOG wont lend you a demo, I'd send you mine to try out (it probably needs a vacation already).
@AdvancedKnifeBro
@AdvancedKnifeBro 5 жыл бұрын
They do- however I think my Light reviews have a lower JPM. There’s just a lot to cover on a multitool- and if I want to make a relatively short video, but also informative- I do cut out some jokes. Also I had a limited time to work on this script- so there wasn’t a lot of time to go back and add jokes. Oh well. My leatherman Wave review has been my biggest review in a while- more than knives and beer- so I’m trying to get some more tool reviews in.

You mean the old Victorinox patent Wenger copied that LEATHERrMAN copied? The can/bottle opener is a Victorinox Patent that they stopped using back in the 1950s, when they switch to their current design that cuts away from user, doesn't pry jagged lid towards working hands and functions as a pot hook/scraper/small flat head and functional phillips head driver and allows for better recycling. Victorinox are pretty crazy recyclers from the steel, alox even the cellidor (organic plastic) they use - like the 'Patagonia' equivalent for knives only been doing much more for longer not that pratts care!

There is probably truth to that... surge has a more comfortable pliers handle... I mean at least looking at it. Generally your hand squeezes tightest when using the pliers... and if it’s a comfortable blade handle or pliers I pick the pliers... and carry a dedicated knife if I’m using it hard- which is rarely.
